The Hyundai Kona Electric, better known as Hyundai Kona EV, was launched in Malaysia in November 2021 but deliveries have been held up, partly due to the lack of clarity regarding the new road tax structure for battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

The matter has since been resolved by JPJ, so deliveries to customers can now begin.

Buyers who are waiting for their Kona EV can look forward to receiving their cars starting March 2022.

The first shipment of slightly over 100 cars was sold out almost as soon as the Kona EV was launched, suggesting that demand for the electric Hyundai is a lot higher than available supply – very impressive for a car that starts from RM 149,888.

The challenge now for distributor Hyundai Sime Darby Motor (HSDM) is less about promoting the Kona EV, but securing enough allocation of the imported (CBU) model to satisfy local demand.

Although the first shipment was sold out very quickly, HSDM is looking forward to import many more units of the Kona EV and yes, you can still place your booking for one.

The Hyundai Kona Electric is available in three variants:

• RM 149,888 for e-Lite - 39.2 kWh battery, 305 km range (WLTP)
• RM 169,888 for e-Plus - 39.2 kWh battery, 305 km range (WLTP), adds electric seats, HUD, ADAS
• RM 199,888 for e-Max – 64 kWh battery, 484 km range (WLTP)

Prices are valid until 30-June 2022, after which, full 10 percent SST applies (currently reduced by half for imported passenger cars).

Tax exemption for imported BEVs is limited only to import and excise tax, and only until 31-December 2023 (qualified based on vehicle registration date).

Road tax exemption is valid until 31-December 2025.
