Unlike property, cars aren’t exactly good investments unless they are rare, special, and one-of-a-kind. That said, special edition versions of regular cars don’t quite get the same appreciation as say a unique hypercar like the Bugatti Divo.

Speaking of the Divo, perhaps the only unit in Southeast Asia is owned by a Malaysian. That owner is Chin Jit Pyng, more widely known as JP Chin who has one of the most impressive car collections in Malaysia.

However, the Divo isn’t housed in Malaysia and is in fact currently in Singapore. In a video posted by JPM Collection, Chin explained that the car is kept in the city island because it is considered “tax-free” there if it isn’t registered and does not require an AP to be brought in.

The Divo, one of 40 in the world, is being taken care of by Wearnes Singapore, holders of the Bugatti franchise for Southeast Asia.

The multimillionaire property developer said in the video that the cars that he purchased aren’t just for eye candy but as investments too. Each personalisation option is carefully selected so as to ensure the car’s values won’t be affected.

But enough about the exclusive hypercar because the most interesting part of the video comes towards the end. If you’ve read this far beyond just summarising the whole article based on the headline, Chin added that one does not have to be extremely wealthy to be a car collector.

Though his next addition to his collection might be another million-euro Bugatti, Chin has added that some classics can be affordable.

In fact, Chin believes that Malaysia’s very own people’s car, the Perodua Kancil could be a future classic. Specifically, he is asking his staff to procure a 2002 model that costs around RM 3,800.

A clean one might fetch a higher price later

The reason for this is to show that car collecting doesn't have to only involve expensive cars, even regular, simple cars are fine. One might want to get a Bugatti in their collection but one has to start off somewhere, even if it's a Kancil.

However, Chin admits that it is still a risk since the little car could either depreciate or appreciate in value. Losing RM 3,800 is nothing though if you’re the proud owner of a Bugatti Chiron and a McLaren P1.

Future classic?

Then again, it is not uncommon to see prices of once-popular cars appreciating. Models like the KE70 Corolla, SJ410 Jimny, and even the original Saga saw values climb especially for clean-looking examples. Could the little Kancil see its values climb too?
