The Cavallino Rampante adds a new model to its Malaysian line-up, and it's in the form of this lithe and distinctive Ferrari Roma Spider, starting from RM 3.2 million inclusive duties, taxes, and minimal options.

Combining the subtle retro styling of the hardtop Roma Coupe with a fabric roof that just needs 13.5 seconds to deploy; the Roma Spider is Maranello's first front-engined, fabric-topped car since 1969's 365 GTS4.

54 years later, the Roma retains the trademark Ferrari characteristic of having the performance to back the looks. Within its all-aluminium chassis sits a twin-turbo, 3.9-litre V8 that makes 612 PS and 760 Nm. Peppy as they come – 70% of torque is available from just 1,900 rpm, so hang on to your hats...

The Roma Spider remains traditionally rear-wheel drive, and the snappy 8-speed dual-clutch transmission (adapted from the SF90 but with longer ratios and a reverse gear) handles shifting duties.

Clients would be happy to note this V8 has been treated to a new oil pump which reduces time-to-pressure in cold starts by 70%, and also increases flow rate at medium revs. This has also been extended to the 'regular' Roma.

Structurally, things remain similar to the Roma hardtop, save for a couple of additions: a new integrated wind deflector, and headrests for the rear seats that are now integrated into the tonneau cover. Combine that with the soft-top mechanism, and the weight gain is a slight 84 kg (total weight now 1,550 kg), making for an insane 393 PS/tonne power-to-weight ratio.

All in all it makes for quick numbers: 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds, 0-200 km/h in 9.7 seconds, and a max speed of 320 km/h.

Other than that, model-specific revisions include strengthened sills and rear structure to maintain body rigidity. It gets multilink suspension all around, with steel brakes - 390 mm in diameter up front and 360 mm at the rear.

Tech headlines the Roma Spider's cabin, with screens playing an omniscient role within. There's a large digital instrument cluster up front, one in portrait form by the centre console, and you can even have another for the passenger. If nothing else, to scare them. As you would.

Connectivity options range from Android Auto, Apple CarPlay; standard stuff you'd have come to expect out of a car like this. There's an available JBL Audio sound system too, among the million other available combinations clients can create through tailored options.

As with every other mode in the line-up, Ferrari backs the Roma Spider with an extended 7-year maintenance programme that covers all regular maintenance for the duration.
