If the MPV you see on this page looks familiar, that’s because you’ve probably seen the concept car before. Now the production Maxus Mifa 9 full-electric MPV has made its debut at the ongoing 2021 Guangzhou Auto Show priced from CNY 269,900 to CNY 379,900 (~RM 178,000 to RM 251,000).
Interestingly, SAIC Maxus also released prices in Aussie Dollars (AUD 59,990, ~RM 182,000), UK Pounds (GBP 49,990, ~RM 282,000), and even Norway Krone (NOK 599,900, ~RM 283,000). Maxus is declaring its ambitious international market plan right off the bat.
As you can see, the production Mifa 9 bears massive similarities with the concept car first put on display at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show in April. The headlights are set within uniquely shaped holders while the daytime running lights (DRL) looks as if it runs across the entire front end.
Being a fully electric MPV, the Mifa 9 doesn’t need a front grille to cool the engine, but Maxus still saw fit to insert a black insert to mimic the look of a front grille. The black insert is paired with a chrome strip on the front apron to further emphasise a futuristic spacecraft look.
The dual-tone finish gives the already large MPV that it is even larger than it is, while the uniquely designed taillights add an aggressive sporty flair. The 19-inch wheels may look rather plain but Maxus designed them with low wind resistance in mind.
Measuring 5,270 x 2,000 x 1,840 mm in length, width, and height with a wheelbase of 3,200 mm, the Mifa 9 is larger than the Hyundai Staria, the Kia Grand Carnival, and the Toyota Alphard as well.
Thanks to its large size, Maxus is able to provide the range-topping Mifa 9 with four captain seats, each seat comes with electric adjustments via a small touchscreen on the armrest.
The lower two variants will swap out the last row of captain seats for standard bench seats instead, allowing the MPV to seat seven instead of just six.
Meanwhile, the front features a two-spoke steering wheel reminiscent of a Kia Picanto’s steering wheel. The crowning glory is the touchscreen that spans the entire length of the dashboard, this puts even the Geely Xingyue L’s 100 cm touchscreen to shame!
As for the powertrain, the Mifa 9’s electric motor is capable of 245 PS and 350 Nm. For now, the Mifa 9 has a range of 520 km, Maxus has already announced that they have plans to launch a 650 km range version in 2023.
There isn’t a time in memory that doesn’t involve staring at cars. After discovering the excitement of watching Schumacher vs Hakkinen, Formula 1 became a major part of life. The love for cars and F1 ultimately led to a job with CAR Magazine. The untimely death of the magazine meant a hiatus from cars at lifestyle women’s magazine Marie Claire before another opportunity came knocking again.
