    Maxus G10  – Overview

Maxus is a brand owned by the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, which is a Fortune 100 Global company and one of China’s ‘Big Four’ automakers. This is important to know, because although the brand is still relatively new in our region, it is backed by big players. Its sole distributor in the Asia Pacific region is Weststar Maxus Sdn Bhd.
Enough about that, let’s look at the MPV. Maxus’ G10 is the second car made by the marque. It can be had in 7, 9, and 10 seat configurations, but in Malaysia we’ll only have the 10-seater, and it is locally assembled in Klang, which explains its competitive price of RM133,019 for the standard variant, and RM152,623 for the SE.
The standard variant of the large MPV debuted in late 2016, with the SE following later in June 2017.

  • Exterior

    Maxus G10 – Exterior

The G10 is a big boy. Visually, it will dwarf even a large people-mover like the Kia Carnival. It’s exterior design is not unpleasing, but it lacks the daring of some of its competition, making it a little more forgettable.
Exterior aesthetics distinguish between the two available variants. The SE comes with a full bodykit – front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and a roof spoiler. Completing the distinction is a set of 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels.
All other exterior features are the same for both variants. They feature HID xenon headlights with LED DRLs, LED tail lights, a front electric sunroof, and a rear panoramic glass roof.

  • Interior

    Maxus G10 – Interior

A two-tone black-brown colour palette dominates the interior, from the seats to the trim on the dashboard, which also features a nice dark marble-like trim. The 10 seats are laid out in a 2-3-2-3 format. They also have a little bit of added flexibility; the third row bench can be folded with a 60:40 split, while the second row bench (also with a 60:40 split) and the third individual seats can be moved forwards and backwards.
Every seat is upholstered with leather, although some reviews say that the leather feels a little thin. Fit and finish could also be better here, with some panels exhibiting sharp edges and inconsistent gaps.

  • Features

    Maxus G10 – Features

The G10 SE features automatic sliding rear doors, as opposed to the manual ones from the standard variant. Aside from this, all other features are the same. Dominating the dashboard is a large 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system, with a digital clock beside it. For the rear passengers, the G10 features a 10.1-inch ceiling-mounted LED screen, as well as LED reading lights for poring over quarterly reports in the dark of night.
The rest of the equipment list includes keyless entry and start, cruise control, rear ceiling-mounted air-conditioning vents, a 220-volt power supply, and a massage system for the front seats.
In the safety department, it comes with 2 airbags, ABS with EBD and BA, ESP, traction control, a tyre pressure monitoring system, child-seat ISOFIX anchors in the second and third-row seats, 3600 cameras, and parking sensors at both ends.

  • Powertrain

    Maxus G10 – Powertrain

Under the hood is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-pot petrol engine that makes 228 PS at 5,500 rpm and 345 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. This engine is mated to a well-known 6-speed ZF automatic gearbox which sends everything to the rear wheels.

  • Driving Performance

    Maxus G10 – Driving Performance

The official century sprint record is 10.2 seconds, and the G10 will go up to 190 km/h. That’s good enough, we suppose, but some reviews have commented on its lack of throttle response. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, as a sharp throttle may not be what you want in a business MPV.

  • Ride Comfort

    Maxus G10 – Ride Comfort

A mix of a few components should mean that ride comfort in the G10 is excellent. Its chassis is tuned by Lotus, so body roll is nicely controlled. The SE’s 18-inch rims are shod with ContiCrossContact UHP tyres size 225/55, so there is a good balance between grip and comfort. Lastly, there are acres of glass allowing light into the cabin, which elevate the entire travelling experience in the MPV.

  • Fuel Consumption

    Maxus G10 – Fuel Economy

The quoted combined consumption for the G10 is 10.3 km/l (9.7 l/100km). It is an older car, and so lags behind the competition in this respect. The Kia Grand Carnival 2.2 turbo diesel is exceptional at 15.6 km/l, the Geely Jia Ji 1.8 turbo diesel returns 12 km/l, and the Hyundai Grand Starex 2.5 turbo diesel, which is a similarly sized MPV to the G10, only gives 9.4 km/l.
On the luxury end of people-movers, the Toyota Alphard 3.5 is able to produce 10.4 km/l.

  • Conclusion

    Maxus G10 – Conclusion

For its price to utility ratio, a corporate vehicle like the G10 is hard to beat. It is bigger than most of the competition, and it is also cheaper than most of the competition. Its lack of interior refinement may mean that families will stay away from it, but to quickly move human resources for business purposes, such an interior should suffice, even though it won’t dazzle potential business partners.
Its features, like the rear air-conditioning vents and that 220-volt power supply, are well-thought out for its suggested vocation. The G10’s most compelling argument is still its price point, and at RM130k for so much car, it’s pretty difficult to disagree.
