The wait is finally over for fans of the MG brand in Malaysia as SAIC Motor Malaysia announced the fabled marque is returning after a long hiatus. However, this isn’t the same Morris Garages that your grandfather lusted over as the Sino-British carmaker is introducing a fully electric lineup of models.
We covered the MG ZS EV crossover in another article but the star here is the MG4 EV which debuted in China as the MG Mulan in 2022. 4 variants are announced for Malaysia though prices are estimates for now with the official pricing to be announced later within the first quarter of 2024 (Q1 2024).
Based on those estimated prices, the MG4 is targeting both the BYD Dolphin and the BYD Atto 3. BYD's entry model is priced between RM 100,530 and RM 125,530 while the electric SUV is priced between RM 150,430 and RM 168,430.
The MG4 is currently produced in China, Thailand, and Indonesia but Malaysian units could likely be imported (CBU) from China. The unit previewed to the media is built at SAIC’s Ningde plant based on the VIN plate.
Dimensionally, the MG4 is a B-segment electric hatchback but has the wheelbase of a C-segment hatchback. It looks sportier than the BYD Dolphin and in the performance-oriented XPower, that go-faster look is enhanced.
The unit previewed to the Malaysian media appeared to be the Lux variant based on some of the features that were offered. Here is the breakdown of the features of all 4 variants of the MG4 EV in Malaysia:

Boot volume for the MG4 is 363 litres with the rear seats up and can be expanded up to 1,177 litres. Meanwhile, charging the electric hatchback takes up to 8 hours via AC charging (7 kW) and 26 minutes through a 150-kW DC charger (10-80%).
