In conjunction with BMW Group Malaysia’s 60 Years Celebration of MINI, the company has announced that it will be adding a new variant to MINI Malaysia’s model line-up – the MINI Cooper S Convertible.
Soft top cars don’t have a huge following here in tropical Malaysia so it’s not surprising that MINI Malaysia’s allocation is limited to just 20 units.
Priced at RM 279,888, the MINI Convertible, in Cooper S tune, carries a RM 30,000 premium over a similarly equipped MINI Cooper S 3 Door.
As it carries the Cooper S badge, the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine makes 192 hp of power and 280 Nm of torque. Drive is transferred to the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Soft tops typically have a smaller boot space but surprisingly the difference isn’t much with the MINI Convertible. While the MINI 3 Door fits 211 litres of cargo (731 litres with the rear seats folded), the MINI Convertible accommodates 215 litres with the roof up, which is actually slightly more than the 3 Door. An Easy Load system also expands the boot opening by by holding the retracted soft top above the compartment hatch.
Of course, the Convertible’s boot space shrinks to just 160 litres with the roof down and you can’t fold down the rear seats.
The electrically operated soft top opens/closes in 18 seconds, with a maximum driving speed of 30 km/h.
The 17” Rail Spoke design in burnish Jet Black are exclusive only to the MINI Cooper S Convertible.
The interior is trimmed in diamond-stitched Malt Brown saddle leather (Leather Chester) while the steering wheel is wrapped in Nappa Leather.
