Iconised in the Japanese anime “You’re Under Arrest,” the classic Honda Motocompo folding scooter from the '80s has been reinvented for the modern era with electrification and could very well be folded to fit in your current Honda City Hatchback.

Dubbed the Honda Motocompacto, the all-electric folding scooter is shaped to be a fun-to-ride “first and last mile” solution to address the new demands and realities of modern urban mobility.

Just like its predecessor, the Motocompacto comes in an ultra-compact design that’s also lightweight and stackable carrying case for convenience. The electric range is up to 20 km while the top speed is a hair-raising 24 kph, more than sufficient as its primary intended purpose. Using a common 110 V household wall plug will give it a full charge in 3.5 hours via the onboard charger. It weighs in at 18.3 kg.

The Motocompacto was designed and developed by Honda engineers in Ohio and California with the intention of getting around cityscapes and college campuses. It was designed with rider comfort and convenience in mind with a cushy seat, secure foot pegs, on-board storage, a digital speedometer, a charge gauge and a comfortable carry handle.

There’s also a smartphone app to go along with it that enables riders to adjust their personal settings, including lighting and ride modes, via a Bluetooth connection to the scooter.

“Motocompacto is easy to use and fun to ride, but was also designed with safety, durability, and security in mind. It uses a robust heat-treated aluminium frame and wheels, bright LED headlight and taillight, side reflectors, and a welded steel lock loop on the kickstand that is compatible with most bike locks,” explained Nick Ziraldo, project lead and design engineering unit leader at Honda Development and Manufacturing of America.

That said, it also has personalisation in mind as the sleek and simple styling is perfect for decals, stickers, skins and more. Owners will also enjoy the fun and functional line of branded Motocompacto accessories that includes a helmet, backpack, apparel and more.

For now, the Motocompacto is only available in the US with a price of just USD 995 (~RM 4,650). It’ll sure make for a fun addition to the Honda City here, here’s to hoping that Honda Malaysia somehow brings it over here.

The Motocompacto name is a play on the original Motocompo, pictured here nestled perfectly into a Honda Today of its time.

“Better late than never.” Some despise it, others begrudgingly agree with it but he swears by it… much to the chagrin of everyone around him. That unfortunately stems from all of his project cars not running most of the time, which in turn is testament to his questionable decision-making skills in life. A culmination of many wrongs fortunately making a right; much like his project cars on the rare occasions they run, he’s still trying to figure out if another project car is the way to go.
