This is the BEV platform for next-gen VW, Audi and Porsche - 800V, OTA, new electronics architecture

With the debut of the 2024 Audi Q6 e-tron comes the first model from the brand to feature the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) and E3 1.2 electronic architecture.

Designed in collaboration with Porsche and CARIAD, the PPE platform allows for the development of high-volume models across different segments. The platform has a modular design tailored specifically for electric vehicles, ensuring optimal efficiency, range, and charging speed.

Key features such as the 800-Volt architecture, powerful electric motors, and advanced battery management system contribute to its performance and versatility. The platform accommodates various design options accounting for wheelbase, track width, and ground clearance to accommodate both high-floor and flat-floor models.

In addition to the hardware advancements, Audi introduces the E3 1.2 electronic architecture. It represents a significant leap forward in vehicle electronics. At its core are five of what Audi calls high-performance computers (HCP), collectively serving as the vehicle's central nervous system.

These computers handle all aspects of the vehicle's functionality, from drive systems and assistance features to infotainment and comfort systems, as well as safety protocols and backend connectivity.

A primary objective in developing the E3 1.2 was to create a scalable and future-proof architecture, applicable across the Volkswagen Group. By transferring functions from hardware to software, the architecture can efficiently manage increasing complexity, ensuring reliability in years to come. Emphasis was placed on secure networking and modularity to support evolving technologies.

Each HCP is dedicated to specific domains within the vehicle. For instance, HCP1 manages the drive system and suspension dynamics, while HCP2 oversees driver assistance systems.

Infotainment functions are handled by HCP3, and comfort features like lighting and climate control are managed by HCP4. HCP5 facilitates internal networking and establishes connections with the digital world outside the vehicle, enabling data exchange and software updates.

Perhaps more importantly, the architecture's design allows for wireless over-the-air (OTA) updates (the first model for Audi) and expansion with new functions, ensuring vehicles remain up-to-date and adaptable to changing needs.

Security measures are integrated from the outset, ensuring the safety and integrity of the vehicle's systems. The standardized architecture also streamlines development and production processes, enhancing efficiency and scalability.
