The 9th-generation Honda Civic FB is often overlooked, sandwiched between the more popular Civic FD and FC generations. Personally, we think it’s a little unfair to the Civic FB. Why? It is of our opinion that this generation is one of the most well-designed, refined, and practical Civics.

While the Civic FD and FC garnered attention for significant improvements in design, equipment, and powertrain technology, the Civic FB's updates were more understated. Its design leans towards elegance rather than sportiness.

But the upside of being overlooked is that the Civic FB hasn't retained its value as strongly as the FD and FC, which makes it an excellent choice for a used C-segment car.

Overview

Introduced with four variants and three powertrains, the Civic FB came with 1.8-litre, 2.0-litre, and 1.5-litre hybrid options. At launch, the prices were:

• Civic 1.8S: RM 116k
• Civic 2.0S: RM 132k
• Civic 2.0S Navi: RM 137k
• Civic 1.5 Hybrid: RM 120k

The Civic FB replaced the Civic FD’s 2.0-litre DOHC 'K20' engine with single-cam 'SOHC' units from the Honda 'R' family. The 1.8-litre R18 engine produced 141 PS and 174 Nm, while the 2.0-liter R20 engine delivered 155 PS and 190 Nm. Both engines were paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels.

The Civic Hybrid utilised a 1.5-liter engine with an IMA mild-hybrid system, producing a combined 110 PS and 172 Nm.

The chassis featured MacPherson struts at the front and an independent multi-link suspension at the rear, with ventilated front and solid rear disc brakes. The 1.8S came with 16-inch wheels and 205/55 R16 tires, while the 2.0S had 17-inch wheels and 215/45 R17 tires.

The Civic FB had a short production span of about four years, and Honda Malaysia introduced a facelift in 2014. Changes included a new color, restyled front grille, and central air inlet. More significantly, the facelift offered better equipment at reduced prices.

The 1.8S gained keyless entry and start, cruise control, auto headlamps, and a price drop to RM 114k. The 2.0S added auto headlamps and two additional airbags, reducing its price to RM 126k. The 2.0S Navi featured a larger 7-inch touchscreen with Mirrorlink and was priced at RM 133k.

Today, used Civic FB prices range from RM 30k for the 1.8S to around RM 50k for the 2.0S Navi, depending on the year, mileage, and condition. Hybrid examples are far and few between.

Conclusion

The Civic FB is a solid choice for buyers seeking a comfortable and practical C-segment sedan. It is more likely to be found in an unmodified and original state compared to the Civic FD or FC, and offers better value-for-money.
