van citroen camper Q&A Review

Which van makes and models are the best choice for conversions for living on the road?

Look at the makes and models of vans that are commercially turned into campers and sold ready to go. Top choices are Fiat Ducato (or Peugeot Boxer and Citroen Relay - they are identical vehicles), VW Transporter (mostly T4 and T5 models) and the Ford Transit. Some camper manufacturers do build onto a Mercedes Sprinter chassis but these are not so popular. If you don’t intend buying accessories or fittings ‘off the shelf’ designed to facilitate your conversion and you are making everything bespoke, then use any van you like!

How did Top Gear make the motor homes Jeremy, James, and Richard made on the road legal?

They were legal, they would not have been on the road otherwise. There is no way the BBC would be seen to encourage The driving of illegal vehicles on public roads. In terms of the camper vans, Clarkson's 3-storey Citroën was fine in terms of dimensions, as a rigid-axle vehicle it was within the maximum exterior dimensions of 2.55m wide and 12 m long, there is no specific restriction on height. The maximum it would need to be road legal would be an SVA test (that's Single Vehicle Approval) like kit cars and non-EU imports would have, and that is much more strict than an MOT but effectively tests the same things, and would not require the car to be tested for stability like cars intended for mass production are. The rear section would not be classed as a passenger space because it did not have proper car seats and seatbelts, so it would be illegal to travel in the back to of it, but that is exactly the same for any commercially-built camper without appropriate seating with seatbelts in the rear. The height of the vehicle was only really an issue in terms of height restrictions on the road itself. As for the other two, James' conversion amounted to little more than a roof-box and Richard's was a flatbed truck carrying a flat-pack shelter. The other particularly ambitious build was the amphibious cars, and the only major issue with those was that Richard's Dampervan needed the rear propellor to be covered because it was permanently connected to the engine and could not for that reason be exposed where it might injure a member of the public. Each time the team built a specialist vehicle conversion, the work was supervised and largely carried out by experts, however ramshackle they may have looked.

What is the best van to convert to a camper van?

I can understand that people are looking to buy second-hand vans for their conversions. There are lots of reasons why you might want to convert your van and while there are lots to be learned from other van converters and their conversions, selecting the right van comes down to why you want to convert it in the first place. On the whole, for example, a list of requirements to convert your van into a campervan may look like this: –Length: Long wheelbase –Height: Enough to stand up straight –Access: Sliding door on the side and rear access –Mileage: Fewer than 100,000 miles –Budget: Around £5,000 Citroen WildCamp Mercedes Sprinter VW Bus Vauxhall Combo Ford Transit Connect Renault Kangoo Peugeot Bipper Suzuki Carry

Which cars make the best camper conversions?

There are several options, however your question is rather open ended, I don’t know what you mean by best. So here are some options; Mercedes - Unimog; This is an older Unimog 435 U1300L Ambulance that has been turned into a camper. I do like Unimogs, Mercedes luxury at its finest; Germany again here is a VW Beetle Camper conversion, you’d better have some construction skills to assemble this pile, and you should not used to not getting anywhere very fast either; There is a wide variety of pickup truck camper conversions they were at one point all the rage, they can be had and done cheaply; Do you like French cars, this is a Citroen Xsara Picasso - it makes me cry when I look ate it; You could always go German, once again, and rosk a VW Camper Van; I hope I have helped!!

What is the difference between an SUV and a minivan that makes one cool and the other stodgy?

A minivan is clearly cool because it is designed to be one thing. A minivan! But, a minivan can be turned into a camper, a minibus, a mobile burger bar, used for trade purposes (plumber or electricians van, etc.), for deliveries and for carrying larger loads than you can typically carry in a standard car. My mini-van (Citroen Relay, 2002 vintage) I acquired to help a friend relocate from West Wales to Oslo in Norway. 1300 miles each way, with a Channel Tunnel crossing and a four hour ferry crossing. It carried the two of us, 1400kg of her personal effects and furniture and two cats. Wales, England, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and Norway and then back again on a total of around £200 (US$250) for fuel. Couldn’t have done that with any SUV on the market. After I got back (and the entire round trip with an overnight stay in Oslo took 96 hours), I spend around £100 ($120) and converted it into a ‘stealth’ camper. From the outside, an ordinary and anonymous electricians van. Inside, bed, TV, stereo, lights, bed and full kitchen with gas cooker and hot and cold running water, fold down table…all mod cons. I use it for travelling on business, and myself and the other lads in my crew use it as a mobile site office and tea hut. Well cool! A sports utility vehicle (SUV) is typically stodgy because at best it will only ever be a compromise. It is neither a ‘sports’ car, or a ‘utility’ vehicle, but a crossover between the two that doesn’t quite tick either box fully. Worst example ever of such a compromise? This: The Suzuki X-90. Not sporty in any measure that counts, and no practical use for anything! Most definitely ‘stodgy’.

What would be the best automatic transmission van to use for a camper conversion, with the emphasis on reliability and maintenance?

Top camper van conversions for efficiency, reliability and minimal maintenance are Citroen/Peugeot/FIAT who all make the same vehicle but badged with different model names. Very few I have ever seen are automatic though…camper vans demand manual gearboxes for the obvious reason. Automatics are zero fun to drive!

What do you think is the best van for converting, Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit, or Dodge Promaster (Fiat Ducato/Citroën Jumper/Peugeot Boxer)? And why?

The Fiat/Citroen/Peugeot vans by a long streak of weasel’s piss. Virtually all commercially available off-the-shelf camper vans, other than VW, use this platform and conversion parts for building campers are freely available and relatively cheap. The Mercedes ‘Sphincter’ is pricey for parts and rather hard to work on. Fords are, well, Fords…

What is the best van to modify so you can live in it?

In my book, a Citroen Relay. I have a 2002 Relay van converted into a stealth camper. Easy enough to DIY most jobs, but aftermarket camper conversion parts are readily available due to the fact that the Citroen Relay is also a Peugeot Boxer and that both are also a Fiat Ducato - the most popular camper conversion after the VW Transporter. Only, VW accessories are about twice the cost.

How does an air cooled car motor, produce heat to the passenger compartment?

Years ago I borrowed a Citroen Dyane. That had a flat twin air-cooled front-wheel-drive engine. The cabin heating took air that had passed over the engine cooling fins and, I think, exhaust manifold and sucked it into the cabin with a fan, with some flaps to divert air to the windscreen for defogging. The air hoses were made of something like cardboard and wire lined with foam rubber; one time they got loose, fell onto the exhaust pipe, and caught fire. A friend had a Volkswagen camper van. That, he said, had an auxiliary heater burning gasoline which heated the van faster on a cold day than waiting for an engine to warm up. Another time I borrowed a VW Beetle, RWD with air cooling. The cabin heater on that was so ineffective that ice formed on the inside of the windscreen on one trip.

What is the difference between RV and heavy duty motors from regular vehicle motors?

Nothing at all. Take one of the best selling RV manufacturers in Europe, Fiat. Their Fiat Ducato range of camper vans have exactly the same engines (developed by Citroen) as their commercial vans, and those engines are exactly the same as used in many of their diesel cars. Even the most popular RV, the Volkswagen Camper in every variant from T1 through to T5 uses an engine identical to one of its standard cars. Ford Iveco….same engines in their campers as in their regular commercial vans. Same with Mercedes, Renault and Peugeot. All their camper models have an engine that is exactly the same as used in one of their cars.
