Admit it, most of us often forget that SUVs were built to have certain levels of off-road capabilities. We certainly did not buy our front-wheel-drive-only Perodua Ativa, or Cik Tiva as we call it, to go off-road. But this Japanese Instagrammer did exactly that with his Daihatsu Rocky.
The Instagram account Kingjarocky was started by the Rocky’s owner specifically to document his off-roading expeditions.
The SUV looks mostly stock, the only changes the owner has made is to swap the standard tyres for all-terrain tyres as well as taller springs for the shock absorbers.
In his videos, he showed off the Rocky’s ability to tackle a flight of stairs, the SUV only just cleared the last step to get back on even ground.
In case you’re wondering, the stock springs on the Rocky are quite a recent purchase. Here’s a video of the Rocky going through rocky terrain on its factory issued springs, original 200 mm ground clearance, and 250 mm wading depth.
Note that we’re not asking you to go off-roading in your Ativa straight away. For one, travel restrictions are still in place, and another the Rocky you see in the videos is a 4-wheel-drive unit with all-terrain tyres. The Ativa is only available in Malaysia in front-wheel-drive guise.
The driver also demonstrates plenty of experience to understand how to get the Rocky out of potentially sticky situations. Here’s another example of the Rocky on stock springs and how the driver determined his next move.
Also, if you haven't done so, be sure to catch our long-term review of Cik Tiva!
