This is the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Coupe, the high-performance version of the model introduced earlier this year to succeed both the C-Class and E-Class coupes.
Visually, the CLE 53 stands out with a more aggressive front apron, larger air inlets, and flared front and rear fenders. The wider track, increased by 58 mm at the front and 75 mm at the rear, contributes to its commanding presence. Optional packages, such as AMG Optics, add even more aggression.
The standard 19-inch wheels can be upgraded to 20 inches, widening the coupe's track by 58 mm in the front and 75 mm in the back compared to the standard CLE. Opting for the larger size includes Michelin Pilot Sport S 5 tires sized 265/35 in front and 295/30 in the back.
Taking centre stage is the 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-6 engine that delivers 449 PS and 600 Nm (overboost), paired with the AMG Speedshift TCT 9G automatic transmission that integrates a second-generation integrated starter generator (ISG).
The ISG, as part of a sophisticated 48-volt electrical system, provides short-term boosting with 23 PS and 205 Nm. Additionally, it offers features such as recuperation, load point shifting, cruising, and a smoother start-stop function.
This enhanced inline-6 powerplant, designated as the M256M and derived from the M256, incorporates various upgrades, including optimized combustion chambers with redesigned inlet and outlet channels, new piston rings, and refined injection processes.
Notably, a newly integrated exhaust gas turbocharger and an electric additional compressor contribute to a boost pressure increase of 0.4 bar to 1.5 bar. This setup allows for a peak torque of 600 Nm during overboost for up to 12 seconds, with a continuous torque output of 560 Nm between 2,200 and 5,000 rpm. The electric turbocharger and compressor enhance response.
Paired with the fully variable AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system, the CLE 53 accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, at tops out at 250 km/h (or 270 km/h with the optional AMG Driverβs Package). The vehicle incorporates perforated and internally ventilated discs, measuring 370 mm at the front and 360 mm at the rear.
Enhancing the driving dynamics is the AMG Ride Control suspension that features steel springs and adaptive adjustable dampers with Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ modes. The CLE 53 includes three-stage AMG speed-sensitive steering and rear-wheel steering, with a maximum angle of 2.5 degrees.
Opting for the AMG Dynamic Plus package introduces a Race drive mode with a drift mode, along with features like the AMG performance steering wheel in Microcut microfibre and red-painted brake calipers.
Inside, standard seats feature Artico man-made leather and Microcut black microfibre, complemented by red contrast topstitching and seat belts. There are also a variety of interior options for the upholsteries and trims, along with AMG performance seats.
It gets the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 11.9-inch central touchscreen that runs on the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX), offering AMG-specific functions and displays.
