Owner review: Cheap and Cheerful — My 2003 Perodua Kelisa 1.0EZi 01

Basic information about my car:

2003 Perodua Kelisa 1.0EZi

window.googletag = window.googletag || {cmd: []}; googletag.cmd = googletag.cmd || []; googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.defineSlot('/22557728108/my_article_fourthp_under_pc', [ 728, 90 ], 'div-gpt-ad-1685525140735-0').addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.pubads().enableSingleRequest(); googletag.pubads().collapseEmptyDivs(); googletag.enableServices(); });
googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1685525140735-0'); });

Reasons why I bought this car:

I was looking for small car and must be automatic.Reason why I prefer a smaller car because of its economy and the convenience of an automatic.I need to go through heavy traffic jam on a daily basis.When I bought this car I was self-employed but now I am working with a company doing sales.So as an added bonus that I got this car.

Car Selection Process

●    I had a budget of:
I had a budget of RM6000 for cash or less than RM20k if loan
●    Models that I have considered include:
Kancil automatic any cc preferably 850 EZi,Kenari or Kelisa
●    Reasons why I chose this car:
I was trying to find a Kancil but can’t get one in reasonably good condition at that price.Found a Kenari but manual.Test drove it but on the day I went to hand over the downpayment,it was just sold.So I was left with this kelisa on the forecourt.They were selling it a bit on the high side(RM18k-I know it is high but just continue reading) but as I was left without much option,I went and took up credit loan from them without any supporting documents.Remember I was still self employed at that time.

User Experience

  • I have already done 17,000 km.
  • My average fuel consumption is 13KM/L.

    Since the purchase, my thoughts about the car are (Please tell us your overall experience of the car):
As I changed many things on this car,it feels much better now and has never let me down since I own it.Ah yes,I replaced the battery too.What do you expect from an early 2000 car.Safety aids is non existent and the only features I have is the CD player.But those are not important.This car is fun to drive.Rev it after 3k RPM the engine gives out a nice roar.Better than my mom’s Viva honestly.For longer drives I have my Persona which more comfortable but in the city it is tiring (read manual).The Kelisa at higher speed is less refined with wind noise is the biggest culprit.I have changed both front door weatherstrip with original items which not cheap,So for the rear I bought those universal rubber strip from Shoppe which actually does work for cheap.

Pros and Cons

Pros of my car

- Fun to drive
- cheap to run
- economical
- Parts are easy and JDM parts are easily available

Cons

-    Unrefined at high speed
-    Rear leg room is a bit tight but it’s ok since I don’t bring passenger around too much
