Making its worldwide debut yesterday in Thailand, the all-new 2024 Mitsubishi Triton made an impact with its “Beast Mode” exterior styling and brand-new powertrains. Except there is really only one engine displacement offered with 3 different power outputs.
The newly developed 4N16 clean diesel engine has different outputs that meet different purposes:

The highest output powerplant is equipped with a new turbocharger and a new combustion system which enables highly responsive driving with abundant torque in the range of practical use. The less powerful units, meanwhile, have a variable geometry turbocharger that performs variable control of turbine capacity.

As for why only one displacement is offered, Chief Product Specialist, Mr Yoshiki Masuda, explained that it is mainly to comply with emissions regulations as well as to be more efficient in time by developing one sole engine displacement and expanding its performance from there.
“We only offer a single displacement with multiple power outputs to comply with emissions regulations and fuel efficiency while increasing power. Engine development requires a lot of tests and checking so we decided to only offer a new 2.4-litre engine instead,” Masuda-san told the Malaysian motoring media at the Triton’s global debut in Bangkok.
He continued, “At this point, there are no V6 or 3.0-litre options. For now, there are no plans for electrification but during development, we decided that the 2.4-litre displacement is just right for petrol- and diesel-powered internal combustion engine (ICE).”
