Some Honda fanboys would give up their mothers for the latest 2023 Honda Civic Type-R FL5, and that’s putting it kindly. Nonetheless, the opportunity to put their money where their mouth is finally here as pictures and videos have sprouted up on social media showing the latest VTEC venture here in Malaysia.
Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, the cars depicted in the posts have made their way here via recond dealers or the grey import market and not via official channels through Honda Malaysia.
This will likely mean a much more menu Rahmah pricing that’s friendly to the wallet as regional pricing for the Civic Type-R FL5 has caused the VTEC of some Honda fanboys to be permanently closed.
Estimated pricing in Thailand for officially-imported units of the hot hatch as placed it around the RM 478k mark. Some might find playing half a million for a Honda to be quite preposterous. Vietnam was the first South East Asian country to officially import the Civic Type-R FL5.
Nonetheless, there’s still a strong chance Honda Malaysia will officially import the car as well, given that we’ve been getting Type Rs since 2007’s FD2R. However, when they do, it won’t be cheap, given that the last FK8 Type R sold here for around RM 330k.
In Japan, the new FL5 Civic Type R is 5 percent more expensive than the model it replaces. Assuming that the same 5 percent increase in Japanese prices applies here, we expect Honda Malaysia to launch the model here sometime in late 2023, priced at around RM 350k.

To recap, the most powerful Type-R ever will be making 330 PS and 420 Nm of torque from its K20C 2.0-litre VTEC turbo engine that drives the front wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission.
Furthermore, it’ll also pack a limited slip differential (LSD), Brembo brakes and sticky Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres around 19-inch wheels.
The recond units pictured here are from fully imported (CBU) from Japan.

We’ve no doubt that Malaysians will be falling over themselves to get their hands on the grey market Civic Type-R FL5. After all, when Honda Malaysia does officially import it, you can expect the waiting list to be insane.
In Japan, there's a 4-year wait while Australian customers will have to wait till 2024 to place an order. The Philippines and Thailand have theirs in limited numbers. Orders globally have surged past 20,000 units.
How much do you think the recond dealers will price theirs at?
