Discontinued due to poor sales of previous gen
Sedan outsold hatchback in Thailand by 10:1
Also affects Australian-market cars
This is it, the end of the line for the Honda CivicHatchback in Thailand: reports suggest that the all-new, 2022 model (codenamed FL) won't make it there, owing to poor sales figures of the previous generation hatch compared to the sedan.
Volume makes or breaks a car, and looking at the numbers of the previous-gen Civic FC (sedan) and FK (hatchback), the former outsells the latter by a ratio of 10 to 1.
Take a peek at the numbers over the years both models were sold in the Kingdom:
In short, the sum of all Civic Hatchback (FK) sold in a five-year period (10,978 units) is only roughly 10% of all Civic sedans sold in the same timeline (105,958 units).
The removal of the next-gen Civic Hatchback from the Thai market means that the Kingdom won't be producing the model too, leaving Australia to source the FL-generation Civic Hatchback directly from Japan.
2022 Honda Civic in Malaysia
Honda Thailand's decision is reminiscent of the situation in Malaysia, whereby the Civic Hatchback wasn't (and will not) be introduced here due to poor volume potential.
However, the 2022 Honda Civic (FE) sedan is launching in Malaysia sometime in Q1 2022 to kick the year off with a bang: we've driven it, and you can read our initial thoughts through the clicky blue words below.
