What sports car would you buy with $25,000 budget?

It depends on what you would consider to be a true “sports car” and how you wish to appropriate the $25k. Many folks consider RWD or AWD to be the only acceptable drive trains to make a car truly sporty (Saab, VW & Honda folks will argue this point very hard, rightly so) Here are a few options: Brand new, 2 door : Mazda Miata, Scion/Subaru FRS/BRZ, Fiat Spyder Best investment 2 seater: Lotus Exige/Elise, salvage 5-spd Acura NSX, Mazda RX-7, mint condition Toyota MR2, Datsun 240z, Honda S2000 CR, Tesla Roadster Best priced used 2 seater: Chevrolet Corvette C6, BMW M6, Alfa Romeo 4c, Lotus Exige/Elise, Factory Five A/C Cobra kit car Best Investment 2 +2 seater: salvage Toyota Supra Turbo, mint condition 5-spd Lexus SC300, Acura Integra Type R, Porsche 996, Ford Mustang Mach 1 , Ferrari 400i, Ferrari 308 GT4, Audi Ur-Quattro, BMW 3.0 CSi, 6-spd BMW 850i Best priced 2+2 seater: Dodge Challenger SRT, Ford Mustang GT/Shelby, BMW M3 (Maybe salvaged M4), Audi S5, Fiat 500 Abarth Brand new 4 door: Honda Civic Si, Dodge Charger, Subaru WRX, Buick Regal Sportback, Honda Accord Sport, Ford Focus ST, Ford Fiesta ST, Mazda 3 Sport, Nissan Sentra Nismo, Toyota Camry XSE, Kia Optima SX, VW Jetta GLI, Hyundai Elantra Sport Best investment 4 door: BMW M5 (E39), 6-spd Cadillac CTS-V Wagon, Mercedes 500E Best price used 4 door: BMW M5 (any generation), Chevrolet SS, Cadillac CTS-V, Suburu WRX STi, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, Mercedes E63 AMG, Mercedes C63 AMG, Lexus ISF, Maserati Ghibli, Dodge Charger SRT, Jeep Cherokee SRT8, Audi S4/S6, Ford Focus RS, VW Golf R, Cadillac ATS, Mazda MazdaSpeed 3 I’m not even going into all the classic muscle & British sports cars that aren’t as “sporty” by today’s standards or all the JDM stuff you can import and register depending on what state you live in. Happy Hunting, keep the sportiest of driving on the track!

Is it worth it to buy a fake Ferrari?

This is a Toyota MR2 with a replica Ferrari kit. The problem is most people who know their cars will spot this fake a mile away and will view the driver with a degree of pathos. It's screaming for attention from the cheap seats. The fact is that the regular MR2 (Mk2) is a fine car. It's dynamic, stylish and performs well (especially the twin turbo model). It's a lot of bang for your buck and gets admiring glances on its own merit. Fitting the kit means it's no longer an MR2 but it's not a Ferrari either. It's a kind of bastard that replaces admiring glances with sad and somewhat embarrassed head shaking. I wouldn't…..

What is the purpose of creating the trunk for a car in the front?

Well I can easily answer this. I own and have owned MR2’s for 26 years of my life. MR2 stands for Midship Runabout 2 seater. There are a ton of folks that think it means Mid engine, Rear wheel drive, 2 seater but that is incredible false so don’t listen to those nut jobs. Anyway, the name says it all. The engine is in the back behind the driver! Now you’re probably thinking so what. Well, mid engine cars typically are more towards a 50/50 split in weight. This provides better handling. Not to mention they are basically a front wheel drive car backwards. The engine is over the rear wheels and it just so happens to be rear wheel drive. Now you see that area in the bottom left corner of the picture? Behind the engine? That’s my trunk. Not really a big trunk but can hold a couple pieces of luggage or a golf club bag. Now, if you have been paying attention you might ask if the trunk isn’t that big where is the spare tire? Let me tell you. It’s in what we call the frunk. Made up word I know but hear me out. The front trunk is where an engine typically sits and is just empty space for a mid engine car. We call it a frunk because it shortens the description and still signifies what it does. My frunk holds my spare tire and tire change tool kit. It also has left over space for a backpack or maybe one paper bag of groceries. It is a tub and the radiator sits at the very front like most cars. I also have cool pop up headlights. Ok, some folks don’t think they are cool but I do. Crappy picture I know but best I had at hand. So the purpose of the front trunk a.k.a. frunk, is to hold something that may not fit elsewhere, like in my cars case, the spare tire and tools. It also can offer extra space for items. Even the Fiero has a trunk and frunk. As for the more exotic cars like Lotus, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and others I’m not thinking about, I know they have some form of space up there but not sure if they are as spacious as my car or a Fiero. But what I do know is all mid engine cars have the engines behind the driver and the front is just left over space the auto manufacturer uses for something else. Hope this helps.

Is insurance on a kitcar cheaper than a standard car, ie,toyota mr2 with ferrari body kit?

Odds are no. An MR2 with a (questionable) Ferrari body kit is still an MR2, and will very likely be insured as such, and it will be a USED MR2, so if you’re in a wreck don’t expect your insurance company to pay to replace the body kit.

Could a company commercialize a vehicle with modern internals but with a classic car body from another make (ex: 1960 Ferrari body)? If so, would they have to pay Ferrari for copyrights and patents?

Copyright in most countries lasts for 70 years. So designs from 1950 onwards are still copyrighted in 2020. The most iconic Ferrari from the 60’s will not be free from copyright until 2032. Patents usually expire after 20 years so any patent publication prior to 2000 is public domain and free to use. Patents do not cover designs. Ferrari charge license fees for models and toys of their cars. They are highly unlikely to license a full size replica, especially one that doesn't replicate the mechanical aspects and will sue for infringement of copyright. This why Toyota MR2 Ferrari replica kits are not that perfect and the kit builder has to find their own badges.

I knocked someones car but he claimed for a lot more and now my insurance has gone from 400 to 900 - help!!? Back in June I knocked into a stationary vehicle in a car park. I waited for the guy to come back and apologised straight away. (when its your fault in life own up) He was initially annoyed (fair enough) but went on to tell me that someone else had knocked into his car recently and caused 600 worth of damage (the other driver had sped off and hed already had a quote for the work). I cant remember the exact wording of the next bit - but it was understood that I would pay whatever it cost on top of that to fix the area (bumper / side corner area) We exchanged details. I told my insurance company what had happened and the previous damage. There were also photos taken at the time that I forwarded on (not sure if they were actually any help) Next I hear his insurance company has approached mine with a bill for 700. The total amount for fixing his car. I brought up the matter of the previous damage - couple of conversations between insurance companies - his asking him directly if there was any previous damage and him saying no. I told my insurance company that there was a friend with me (we were walking our dogs in the park) who had heard the whole conversation - in fact she was the one that took the pictures. She is a responsible, respectable person who was happy to make a statement. I was told by the insurance company that as it was someone who knew me - they couldnt be seen as an impartial person and they ended up paying the whole amount to his insurance company. I have just received my new insurance quote. Last year it was 437 and now that I have lost my 3 years no claims bonus (I have been driving for much longer but have only owned a small van for 3 years (practicality for my dogs muddy feet) and insurance starts again for vans) but I also have this 700 fault against my name this year. My insurance quote is now 960. Is there anything I can do. Does anyone have advice for any further action I can take? I believe in taking responsibility for your actions - but I am being cheated here out of a lot of money and I dont know what to do. If 100 was down to me then I could have just paid that amount directly and not lost my no claims bonus. But as it stands it will cost me around 500 this year and more again on the consequent years of insurance. Sorry for this being a long one but I really am lost. What are Toyota's best engines of the past 15 years? Which should be avoided?

Coming from someone who has read all the development papers Toyota published on all their engines starting with the ZZ series... In the last 15 years Toyota has built what you can think of as 2 generations of "normal" engines, along with some stragglers from the previous generation that were still produced for a few years. The 2 generations I'm talking about are the engines ending in "Z" and "R", i.e. (engine code followed by the most common displacement block in parentheses) NZ (1.5L I4), ZZ (1.8L I4), AZ (2.4L I4), MZ (3L V6), UZ (4L V8), and replacing all of the "Z"s with Rs, the NR, ZR, AR (got a bump to 2.5L displacement), GR, UR. Some stragglers that made it into the 2000s are the JZ and S engines. These are mostly pedestrian engines that are found in Yaris (NZ, and very recently NR), Corollas (the ZZ and ZR engines), Camry (AZ, AR, MZ, GR), vans/trucks/SUVs (GR, UZ, UR). These engines are more or less basically the exact same thing, peak power comes at 6000rpm for around 75-80hp/L, around 100Nm/L peak torque arriving in the 4000rpm range, mostly similar features, and mostly reliable, mostly boring. Many of them take well to aftermarket turbochargers, producing well beyond their designed power. The shortblocks are generally overbuilt a bit, for example some engineer supposedly said the 1ZZ was designed to spin at 7300rpm with no problems, even though they limited it to well below 7000rpm. Out of these plain engines which is what you're talking about, I will nominate a few notable performers: 2GR-FE/FSE - Toyota's staple V6, a little dated but still a solid performer even by today's tough standards. Somewhat short stroke at 83mm, relatively low weight, extremely reliable, and the direct injected version in Lexus cars like the IS350 is reasonably powerful and was Toyota's most advanced engine until recently. Lotus uses this in their Evora with a 7500rpm limiter, which goes to show how overbuilt it is. 2AR-FE - This is your run of the mill Camry engine but I thought it deserves a mention. With the GR and ZR engines Toyota made piston oil jets and dual VVT-i standard, but the 2AR added a 3 stage variable displacement oil pump and dual length intake manifold runners for better torque. For 2008, this was an extremely technologically advanced motor for an econobox. 1NZ-FE - Toyota's workhorse. Perhaps no other engine has brought Toyota as much profit as the 1NZ, which I believe still has not been retired from the Yaris despite a venerable 16 years of service. The 1NZ-FXE powered the first Prius, and still powers the Prius C. The only real interesting feature is that it has an offset crankshaft for friction reduction. This is a boring modest engine, but it's solid, reliable, very compact, and very lightweight; some guy put one in an MR2, threw a big turbo on it, and ran it at 8000rpm for a long time until he blew the bottom end out having boosted it to double its stock power output. People have put 500hp through these little engines with forged internals. 2UR-GSE - I don't actually really like this that much, because for a performance V8 it should be producing more power, but it gets an honorable mention for having VVT-iE (electrically controlled camshaft phasing), and titanium valves in the new RC-F. Engines to be careful about: 1ZZ-FE, pre-2003 had oil consumption problems. A revised piston in late 2002 fixed the issue. Okay now that we're done with the boring stuff, here is a highlight of Toyota's more epic engines from the last 15 years: 3S-GE ,- This old ironblock dinosaur only barely makes the 15 year cut, so I thought it deserves a sendoff. It's an early 80s design, best known for the turbo 3S-GTE variant found in the SW20 MR2 Turbo, which only produced 200hp, but as with every turbo engine, people figured out that you can just drop a bigger turbo in and get more power. What people don't know is that the naturally aspirated versions were upgraded and made serious amounts of power. The latest ones in highest output form came with exotic titanium valves, and you could get a kit that made this 2L beast kick out 270hp, numbers which would make Ferrari jealous. 2ZZ-GE ,- The ZZ engine that everyone likes more than the crappy 1ZZ. It powered the Celica GTS and famous Lotus Elise, and did not have the 1ZZ's tendency to gulp oil and destroy cats. 8500rpm, 190hp, ceramic particle reinforced metal matrix composite block, Yamaha heads, Toyota's first use of dual cam profiles, what's not to like? Beware, it does need some upgrades for reliability, such as a baffled oil pan (many of these fine motors die from oil starvation), oil pump, and a few others if you want to run it on the track. One of the few mass production race-car like engines that can be mentioned in the same breath as Honda. 1LR-GUE ,- No epic Toyota engine list is complete without the Lexus LFA powerplant. 9500rpm, the highest rev limit in a road car ever, not including the old Honda cars that essentially had motorcycle engines. They say it's lighter than the 2GR-FE, but makes 2x the power. But what really matters is this:

Why can't regular car manufacturers make cars that look cool like Lambos, and sell them cheap?

There are in-fact, body kits, which can be professionally installed on regular car models to emulate Ferrari, Maserati, Porsche and other high-end sports cars. If done with a lot of care and skill, they can be convincing, however the bottom line is it will always be a knock-off, will cost a lot to execute, will still perform like a cheaper mass-produced car and will have very little resale value. It’s kind of like peeing in a dark suit. You’ll have a warm feeling and few people will know… (A Pontiac Fiero with a Ferrari kit.) (A Toyota MR2 in Ferrari F355GTS clothing) (A beautiful Porsche Speedster kit on an ordinary VW Beetle chassis and drivetrain) (Not a real Lambo Mercielago) Popular candidates for conversions include VW Beetles, Pontiac Fieros and Toyota MR2 sports cars. As for actual manufacturers copying the appearance of exotic cars, that would most-likely result in massive lawsuits. Automotive styling, like other creative works are legal property and are protected. A manufacturer would need permission, a license and would have to pay royalties for the use of another car company’s design. In the end, the original creator would probably not grant permission. Now, that being the case, some automotive designers do quit their companies and hire on with other companies, often bringing their original ideas with them. Examples include Virgil Exner, Raymond Loewy, Ikuo Maeda and Bob Lutz.
