Well, first things first... if you are an'',NON-FAMOUS'' ,DJ/Producer, then usually, no one would look at you in the Music Industry. Let's say Rihanna makes a new song called "Ferrari", so the song is an hit, #1 in the Charts, so she and the label decides to ask some Famous Producers to Remix her Ferrari, but normally she and her label would ask someone who is Famous, and Marketing Capable like: ,David Guetta, Calvin Harris, Afrojack, Tiësto, Hardwell, Martin Garrix..., why? Because they are popular in the Music industry and they can make some good money and Rihanna, they are like MVP's in the EDM Scene. (No) So after the Charts hit Worldwide, and now two months later the Remix EP by popular producers, the track Ferrari is an apsolute hit... so you decide to make a Non-Contract Remix, called a Bootleg... Rihanna - Ferrari (You Bootleg) which is not official and not any contracts involved in this situation. And yeah, you did an Bootleg (non official remix) and two months later, the Bootleg got more popular then her song himself, you hit let's say 2 Billions views on YouTube... so you're now somehow popular. In my opinion - except maybe for working on your craft (getting experience in front of live crowds or working in a studio on a recording - which you can do at home if you have software and decent recording equipment), Atlanta is the better choice. While it’s far more competitive than Charlotte, the reality is Charlotte is still struggling to support venues for hip hop to play in the city. Rap and hip-hop are still treated like bastard stepchildren - if you can travel to New Orleans or Memphis, it’s much better than Charlotte - but Atlanta is still the hip-hop/rap capital of the south. Tracy Morris, who is a publicist, manager and freelance writer that covers the Atlanta music scene, and who owns a company called 10,000 Hours Music & Film, has written about what it takes to make it in the very competitive Atlanta hip hop music scene. Edgewood Avenue Edgewood Avenue,, perched near downtown, is the easily one of the most culturally influential streets America has experienced. From the nearby colleges, some of the hottest trends in clothes and music have been brought to you via ,Edgewood Avenue, and its cultural stores and influential hip hop establishments. Hip Hop brings people together. Industry people of all walks of life were brought together and established Edgewood the “industry hangout” called the ,A3C Socials,. Each month during the season, people are invited to attend monthly socials at an Edgewood bar as part of the ,A3C, event. Not only do artists come, but label executives, managers, attorneys, and anyone related to the music industry are present and available to mingle with. Even the hip hop elite like ,Stalley, and ,Killer Mike, from Atlanta come to the event and interact with Atlanta artists. It’s a tight community where everyone knows everyone and if they don’t, they meet them here. If you are going to hang out and be a part of the music community, Edgewood is the place to be. Dance Clubs Atlanta is all about the party and the dancing. Come to the clubs, support them and get to know the DJ’s. Clubs like ,Compound,, ,Opera,, ,Mansion Elan, and the ,Gold Room, set high standards in Atlanta for hip hop. Owner of ,Compound,, ,Gold Room, and ,Soho,, ,Alex Gidewon,, is a shrewd businessman and brings in top names to his clubs. If you are on ,Billboard’s Hot 100, and are hip hop, chances are you’ve performed at one of his clubs and probably frequent the luxurious VIP when in town. ,Opera, is in the Nightclubs & Bars’ USA Top 50 and it is packed most nights of the week. Hip hop nights are Wednesday and Saturday. ,Mansion Elan, is an undeniable force in Atlanta. They have had performances like ,DJ Drama,, ,Rick Ross,, ,Future,, ,2 Chainz,, ,Fetty Wap, and others. Hip Hop is always playing at ,Mansion Elan,. Strip Clubs,/,Coalition DJ’s That’s right, strip clubs. They are essential to making it in Atlanta hip hop. According to ,DJ Filthy Rich,, “To get discovered in Atlanta you have to be poppin' in the strip clubs. There is no way around it. That’s where all the dope boys, bad chicks, athletes and tastemakers party.” He goes on to say that, “Once you get popular with that crowd it spreads to other cities and to the radio. That’s why 90 percent of artists who blow up in Atlanta go through the ,Coalition DJs, because we run the strip clubs.” While all strip clubs are important to hip hop, these stand out to ,DJ Black Bill Gates,, an Atlanta strip club legend, “,Magic City,, ,Blue Flame,, ,Crucial,, ,Stilettos,, ,Medusa,, ,Chic,.” There are right and wrong ways to approach a DJ, however. Atlanta is home to new cutting edge producers. Four songs in the ,Hot 100 Billboard, Chart’s Top 20 were produced in part by ,Metro Boomin,. His beats are simple but strategic in nature; a looping beat with just the right pauses for effect. They provide the backbone of the song without dominating it. Leland Tyler Wayne, professionally know as ,Metro Boomin,, wasn’t originally from Atlanta. He was born in Missouri but he recognized Atlanta’s power at an early age. While he was still in high school, his mother would drive him to Atlanta (over 8 hours) to collaborate with local artists. One of those rappers was ,Tay Don, which led him to collaborate with the ,Brick Squad, label. The rest is musical history. ,Southside, is another producer in Atlanta worth noting. He is known for his distinct trap sound that is gritty and thunderous. He began working with then unknown ,Waka Flocka Flame, and his debut album along with ,Lex Leger,, another producer. Eventually, he was signed by ,Gucci Mane’s, label, ,1017 Brick Squad,. He also has a song or two in the top 20 on ,Billboard’s Hot 100, chart consistently. ,Zaytoven, is another super star producer in the Atlanta area. He won a ,Grammy, for his contribution to ,Usher’s, ,Raymond v. Raymond, album. He is also on the 1017 Brick squad label producing multiple songs for Gucci Mane, Migos, Future, Waka Flocka Flame, 2 Chainz, Travis Scott, etc. He has promotional opportunities for artists with a budget. These producers and others are the ones driving the trap sound coming out of Atlanta currently. According to ,Ferrari Simmons, of ,Streetz 94.5,, “Trap heavy 808 vibe isn’t going anywhere. A lot of the big dawgs like ,Mike Will Made It,, ,Mustard,, ,Southside,, ,808 Mafia,, ,Metro,, ,Sonny Digital, and ,Bobby Kritical, are controlling the wave at the moment (to name a few).” ,DJ Black Bill Gates, predicts the tide will change in the coming years, “I see the music trending toward a more universal sound” he says. “I also see it becoming more lyrical every year for artists concerned with longevity.” Record Labels Besides ,1017 Brick Squad Records,, there are several other hip hop labels in Atlanta; all started by super star rappers. Does that make a difference? Maybe. They all know what life in the Atlanta streets is about and what it takes to make it because they’ve been there. Fiercely competitive but once they make it, they reach back and pull someone up. There is a grit to the work that needs to be done and it seems they are always working. Most of them “live” hip hop and can be found at all hours of the night in the studios around Atlanta. There is a strong work ethic here but it’s more than that. Most of these people eat and breathe their work; it’s a lifestyle. Artists such as ,Travis Scott,, ,B.o.B,., ,Young Dro, are some of the artists on the label. There are also some notable producers on the label like ,DJ Toomp,, ,TrackSlayerz, and ,Nard & B,. T.I. is still king in Atlanta and is credited for popularizing the trap sound along with ,Young Jeezy, and ,Gucci Mane,. He has released nine studio albums, will seven of them reaching the top five in the ,US Billboard 200, chart. He has won three ,Grammy, awards. Despite his run ins with the law, the is not going anywhere and continues to be a huge influence in the Atlanta music scene. BME, (Black Market Entertainment) is a record label which houses ,Lil Jon, and professes “Crunk Ain’t Dead,” He hasn’t put out much lately except the notable “,Turn Down for What,” (with ,DJ Snake,) which was nominated for both a ,Grammy, and a ,MTV Music Award,. He proved it’s not quantity but quality that matters. Ludacris, has a label called ,Disturbing tha Peace, for it’s mostly for his releases as you can tell from the website which has something on there from 2012. But, that’s okay Ludacris. We are all big fans of the ,Fast & Furious, series which the newest installment just came out, ,The Fate of the Furious, and in which he stars. The transition from music to movies suits you. Freebandz, is a record label founded by ,Future, and distributed through ,Epic Records,. His artists are called “,Freeband Gang,” and include ,Young Scooter,, ,Zoey Dollaz, and ,DJ Esco, and others. Future himself received 2012 Best New Artist and 2014 Best Male Hip Hop Artist from the ,BET Awards,. Quality Control, is making a big impact on rap culture. ,Lil Yachty,, ,Migos,, ,OG Maco,, ,Young Greatness,, ,Skippa Da Flippa,, ,Jose Guapo,, ,Rich the Kid, and more are on their roster. ,Coach K,, legendary manager and now business owner, leads the way and lends undeniable industry knowledge to the label. He lets them do their thing without too much interference and it’s paying off. Showcases and Events If you are physically in Atlanta or planning a visit, there are several showcases and events that are worth attending. One is at ,Apache Café, on the 2nd Thursday of the month. It’s the ,Exposure Open Mic, and is hosted by ,B Rich, of ,Grand Hustle,. Every so often you have T.I. come through and some major music executives. It’s hosted by ,Fort Knox,, a long-time DJ in Atlanta that is worth getting to know. You also have ,Maximum Xposure, Events if you want to interact with local celebrities like ,DJ Drama,, ,Zaytoven,, ,DJ Holiday,, ,DJ Smallz,, ,Drumma Boy, and more. It’s put on my ,TJ Makin Moves, who helped discover ,Roscoe Dash, and ,Ferrari Simmons, of ,Streetz 94.5, ATL FM. The event winner gets a live interview with ,Fly Guy DC, and they play a song snippet on the radio. If you want connects with ,Blue Flame, (strip club) and Grand Hustle, you need to connect with ,Tracey, with the Hustle & Flow events although they aren’t held very often. ,Schweinbeck, also puts on events that are standard in the industry. Work Ethic and Support Southern artists have a more independent work ethic because of the lack of major labels and just the culture of living in Atlanta. Being involved is really important. You cannot expect to make it and be a virtually unknown artists sitting in your living room. “when you’re present people see that. Way more than any other city I have ever been to. The city is very good at championing its home grown artists and they are very proud of them so the streets get behind them. It’s like if an artist from Atlanta makes it we all make it. This city is also very self-sufficient. They don’t need NY and LA, they can blow up right here.” ,DJ Westside, gives this advice, “Atlanta is special for rappers because it’s the music hot spot right now, a lot of the biggest artists live here, record labels are here, and a lot of rappers hottest in the industry careers have started here.”

Rick Ross f/ Drake and French Montana “Stay Schemin” Album:, ,Rich Forever, ,Producer:, The Beat Bully "Stay Schemin" is a Drake song in everything but name. It's a continuation of the chilling sound Drake and Ross had already developed on a string of collaborative singles, from "I'm On One" to "Aston Martin Music," and French Montana's slurred style perfectly complemented the ambiance. Drake, of course, ended up with the record's most memorable line, a shot at Kobe's wife (one he later apologized for). But the entire presentation of the track was only possible in a post-Drake world, where anxious ambiguity is a the canvas. "Stay Schemin'" remains a stark, ominous soundtrack of emotional turbulence. —,David Drake 11. Drake “Marvins Room” Album:, ,Take Care, ,Producer:, Noah “40” Shebib "Marvins Room" is the archetypal Drake song—the end game of all his potential and the culmination of his talents. From the day we first heard So Far Gone, we knew this is where Drake's music was headed. He tried to make this song, with this exact same song structure, on numerous occasions ("Houstatlantavegas," "Trust Issues," "Shot For Me") to varying degrees of success. He's essentially trying to make an R&B song with a guest verse from a rapper, except he's a guest on his own song. But never was the rapping or the singing as composed, well written, or focused as it is on "Marvins Room." The record does play right into the hands of Drake haters who call him "emo" and a "sensitive thug." But when someone can articulate a common social phenomenon like drunk dialing so well—and make it so damn catchy—what does it matter? This was easily one of the best R&B songs of the past few years and one of the best 16s. Drake admits to feeling the emotions rappers rarely admit to: Sorrow, shame, and regret. He even says sorry at the end of his verse. Despite all his efforts, you get the feeling he never actually gets the girl. Love is a losing game. —,Insanul Ahmed 10. Drake “Too Much” Album:, ,Nothing Was the Same, ,Producer:, Nineteen85, Sampha Drake introduced the world to "Too Much" during a live performance on ,The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,before ,Nothing Was the Same ,came out. The raw emotion of the performance blew fans away and enhanced the very personal subject matter of the song—especially the second verse where, he opens up about his family members and their struggles. From the line, "Money got my whole family moving backwards," to "hate the fact my mom cooped up in her apartment, telling herself that she's too sick to get dressed up and go do shit," Drake is as vulnerable as ever. The combination of elite rapping and realness is something that has been a staple of Drake's career, and he certainly perfected it during this verse, and throughout the song. —,Zach Frydenlund 9. Drake “Know Yourself” Album:, ,If You're Reading This It's Too Late, ,Producer:, Boi-1da, Vinylz, Syk Sense You get the sense Drizzy was in a Kanye ,Graduation,-era state of mind when he crafted this banger. You know, with the goal to create stadium-status hits. He no doubt envisioned the concert and party grams chanting his pro-6ix side refrain, the first of which hit just days after the song dropped amidst 16 other new tracks. The recipe is deceptively easy: study biggest crowd pleaser, "Worst Behavior," and distill that gem's boastful call-and-response lines into one big set piece, the setup for which is Spielbergian in its tension building. It's regrettable that lazy fuckass DJs consistently skip straight to the running of the woes, since the beauty is in the buildup, as Boi-1da's bouncy beat accrues to that release, that revelation that you do indeed know yourself. But before you mob with your crew (sorry, I'm not into "woes"), when Drake says "I want that Ferrari," you have to hit the swerve. My personal favorite line is, "I know a nigga named Johnny Bling," because man, what an awesome,Sopranos,-esque moniker. The pace quickens, as does Drake's flow. Then the heavens of the 6ix open up and the peak of 2015 turn-up energy is released...that is, until "Back to Back" comes on. If only the bangers on ,VIEWS, were this urgent. —,Frazier Tharpe 8. Drake f/ The Weeknd “The Ride” Album:, ,Take Care, ,Producer:, Doc McKinney, The Weeknd It's all about the perspective. "You won't feel me until everybody say they love you, but it's not love/And your suit is oxblood"—did you catch it? How easily Drake switches from the first-person to the second in the opening bars of "The Ride"? It's such a simple move, to put the listener in the rapper's shoes, but it pays real dividends. In ,Decoded,, Jay Z talks about how when you rap along to his songs, you become Jay—you inhabit the role. And with so many criticizing Drake for his navel-gazing, letting the listener in on the introspection is key. "The Ride" is Drake's best rappity-rap song. He doesn't sing. There's no hook beyond the vocalizations from Abel Tesfaye and super-high falsetto about being faded, faded, faded, faded too long. Over two verses, Drake offers a succinct biography, from the early days in Toronto to dinners in the Napa Valley, and some of the coldest declarations of power listeners have ever heard from the MC. "You see a girl and you ask about her." "They put a cloth across your lap soon as you sat down/It's feeling like you own every place you choose to be at now." And then, in the final verse, he switches back to the first person as he's heading to the Toronto Pearson International Airport with vivid details that pop all the more because of the turn in POV: "I'm driving right up to it now/Make sure you got your coat on/The runway can be cold especially after summer's rolled on." The listener's suddenly riding shotgun; Drake hopes you can stay warm. Meanwhile, he's out here "Messing over the lives of these niggas/That couldn't fuck with [his] freshman floater." —,Ross Scarano 7. Or so they say. Drake just dropped an album dedicated to his birthplace, but he retreated back to his new home as the reviews crying mediocrity poured in. Imagine a hazy, typical sun hanging over the YOLO Estate as Drake glowers, sullen but charged up that almost a full year since settling the Meek Mill beef, he once again has to lay pen to paper to combat fresh criticism. "4PM in Calabasas" isn't the warning-shot of "5AM in Toronto," and it certainly doesn't have the calm ambition of "6PM in New York," nor the something-to-prove attitude of "9AM in Dallas." This is something totally different, a reminder wrapped in a sneer—does Drake have an equally disrespectful flex as hilarious as "See Kris Jenner, I beep twice and I wave/the rest of you boys, I blow keysh right in ya face" elsewhere in his catalog? Amidst all the talk, across the reviews, thinkpieces, and even podcasts, here's Drake laid up like Juelz Santana with one leg out the Phantom, fixing his best mean mug in the center of Hollywood's suburb, dropping it only for neighborly respect. You won't find any testosterone-fueled proclamations that you underestimated greatly here, just a perfectly dry laugh. You thought Drizzy would be vulnerable? He sounds more insolent than ever. Drake “5am in Toronto” Album:, N/A ,Producer:, Boi-1da, Vinylz, Nikhil Seetharam You underestimated greatly, and Aubrey is fucking fed up. Don't think he can hold his own with rap's best? You didn't think he deserved to be the poster boy for the new generation? He'll prove you wrong later on the album, but not before making you sweat the entire summer after dropping one hell of an appetizer. Forget ,IYRTITL—,*this is Drake at his most villainous*, with bars that even made rappers who consider him fam do a double-take. "Drake featuring Drake?" Low-key a more potent dosage of Regina George-level friendly disrespect than "Control." Early 2013 found Drizzy at the dawn of a new phase. Fitting that he released the mood music during the wee hours of the morning.— ,Frazier Tharpe 5. Drake “Back to Back” Album:, N/A ,Producer:, Daxz While Drake has been in his fair share of conflicts with other rappers—Common, Pusha T, Kendrick Lamar—no beef has been bigger than his battle with Meek Mill. The situation was a real threat to Drake's career, with Meek calling him out for using a ghostwriter. Initially it was unclear how Drake would respond, but when he did, it was with a heavy punch. "Charged Up" arrived first, but "Back to Back" was the knockout. 4. DJ Khaled f/ Drake, Rick Ross, and Lil Wayne “I'm On One” Album:, ,We the Best Forever, ,Producer:, T-Minus, Nikhil Seetharam, Noah “40” Shebib Despite Khaled's attempt to transform it into one of his high-drama Frankenstein posse cuts, "I'm On One" is all about Drake doing what Drake does best. Like all great Drizzy x 40 collaborations, it's a wistful, conflicted examination of the high life, fluctuating between introspective apologies and brash boasts. One minute he's crooning about being too drunk to control his slutty impulses, the next he's spitting at Jay-Z and Kanye about taking their spot at the top. From a production and songwriting perspective, "I'm On One" shows an impressive attention to detail. 40 softens up T-Minus' trap-style drums with his lo-fi monophonic filter and a subtle layer of moody chords that give the track an emotional, restrained balance. The entire first half of the song has no kick drums—the element that gives most rap songs their booming heft—a clever message to the listener that something big is around the corner. Drizzy's verse is also designed to build anticipation, beginning with slow singing before switching suddenly to a more aggressive rapping style. When the first verse ends, just when you think the chorus and bass are going to burst out of your speakers, the whole track goes underwater and Drake reverts to softly singing an unexpected pre-chorus ("All I care about is money and the city that I'm from..."). And then, after a minute and 15 seconds of teasing the listener, they finally unleash the chorus with booming bass underfoot. It feels like a release, one that perfectly matches the reckless abandon of the lyrics ("Fuck it, I'm on one"). 3. Drake “0 to 100/The Catch Up” Album:, N/A ,Producer:, Boi-1da, Frank Dukes, Nineteen85, Noah “40” Shebib Certified platinum—not bad for a one-off single. In July 2014, just before his annual OVO Fest, Drake dropped “0 to 100/The Catch Up” to the masses. The song showcased Drizzy's versatility over the course of six minutes and two parts. "0 to 100" initially received a ton of attention, and rightfully so given memorable lines like, "I been Steph Curry with the shot/Been cookin' with the sauce, Chef Curry with the pot, boy," and "I should prolly sign to Hit-Boy cause I got all the hits, boy." But it's "The Catch Up" where the production shines through with a smooth backdrop and the hook comes in the form of an unheard James Blake sample. For his part, Drake takes a more introspective tone, questioning whether he reads too much into the commentary. It's an undeniable performance from the Toronto representative. —,brokencool 2. Drake “Worst Behavior” Album:, ,Nothing Was the Same, ,Producer:, DJ Dahi Aggressive and boastful, Drake gives a voice to everyone who feels they've been neglected by the ones that matter on "Worst Behavior." Largely an autobiographical trip through Drake's journey to fame, Drake is, reflecting on how much he's been let down or overlooked in the early stages of his career. Drake is completely unapologetic here, and wants you to know he's holding on to those grudges and staying on his worst behavior. Oh, and it's a banger. —,Nora-Grayce Orosz 1. Drake “Started From the Bottom” Album:, ,Nothing Was the Same, ,Producer:, Mike Zombie "Started From The Bottom," much like some of Drake's biggest tracks ("The Motto," "Headlines") initially feels like a sidestep, rather than a bold new directions, but over time works its way into your subconscious. "Started From The Bottom" has that hooky, unforgettable quality, a song that at first feels slight but soon reveals itself to be much greater than its initial impression. Attacked by critics for representing a "struggle" when he was an artist born of some privilege, Drake doubled down, further trolling those frustrated by his adaptation of hip-hop's language to his personal experiences while simultaneously making an anthem for those very people the critics claim to defend.
