If you could have any car from the 1980s, what would it be?

The Exotic Italians - Ferrari 308 GTB - prefer the ‘original look’ rather than to 288 GTO) Lamborghini Countach - end of discussion The Unusual (Its a British trait) - Rover SD1 (Especially models with the V8) All American muscle (don’t know too much about these cars but they look and sound great) Chevrolet Corvette (I’m a Mustang Fan but the 1980’s Mustang is not the best looking) Timeless, affordable classic Austin (Later Rover) mini

What are the interesting facts about Standard 2000?

The Standard 2000 was launched to the Indian market during April 1985. It was the product of a deal between Chennai-based Standard Motors and Austin Rover of UK. The Standard 2000 was sold as the Rover SD1 in markets across Europe and it did fairly good there. When it got launched in India, it looked like something that was way ahead of its time. It was undoubtedly the best looking car during its time in India, with nothing even coming close to it in terms of its looks. The Rover SD1 was itself an appealing car, with its design inspired from the iconic Ferrari Daytona. The Standard 2000 shortly became the most exclusive car in India, priced at Rs.2.12 lakh at that time. This made it the most expensive car in India during that time. Most of the cost was levied on the imported parts such as the body panels and mechanicals of the car. While the original Rover SD1 was powered by a 3.5 litre V8 motor, the Standard 2000 received a 2.0 litre Vanguard engine. The 2061cc displacement engine made only 82 BHP of power, which made the car an underpowered one. There was also the introduction of twin SU-type bottle carburettors on the car. With the engine being an underpowered one, the performance of the Standard 2000 was severely affected. The car managed to reach 0-60 kmph in 8.9 seconds. This made it 0.4 seconds slower than the Hindustan Contessa and a shocking 1.7 seconds slower than the Maruti 800. Fuel consumption was also not up to the mark, with owners getting a meagre 5-6 kilometers per litre. Add to that an obsolete four-speed gearbox, which was locally designed by Standard. There were instances in which the gearbox was prone to vibrations which got transferred upto the gear lever, thus frustrating the owners. But all was not bad in the Standard 2000. It came with a lot of features which were unheard of back in the day. These include power steering, electric windows, cigarette lighter, seatbelts and central locking to name a few. Features like these are often common in even budget cars today. On top of that, the interiors were luxurious and comfortable and the Standard 2000 was a smooth operator while riding overall despite the faulty gearbox. But was it good enough to attract pepole into buying it? No. The Standard 2000 never managed to do well in the market owing to its large price and constant complaints from previous owners. It was said to be unreliable compared to the Maruti 800 and Standard didn't have many service centres to back it up. Thus, the last Standard 2000 rolled out in March 1988 from the company's Madras plant. This marked the end of an era with Standard running into bankruptcy problems a couple of months before that. Over the years, the Standard 2000 has received some respect from a few enthusiasts and has now become an collectors model. But that doesn't revive the legacy of the car, which was perceived to be flashy, futuristic and unbalanced at the same time. Thank you.

What is the most beautiful car in the world?

There is no such thing as a best looking car of all time. As the saying goes, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. Everyone has different ideas about beauty. So when it comes to cars and their looks, the best looking car of all time depends on who you ask. As I'm the one typing out this answer, my favourite cars are the ones that I'm going to list. Of course, being a petrolhead, it's extremely difficult for me to chose a small list, let alone a single car from among the millions and millions of cars there are. I'd also like to say that the following list is just in random order, and that I'm not ranking these cars. 1. Jaguar E-type from the 1960s. Especially the convertible model. The coupe model just doesn't have the same look for some reason. 2. The Lamborghini Countach from the 1970s and 80s. No supercar can get any crazier than the Countach. The ultimate poster car. Even now, almost 43 years since it's debut, there's no car that can overshadow its looks. 3. Land Rover Defender. The SUV. There's a reason why this is beautiful. It's got a million little faults, but it is the best design idea anyone ever had, even when you consider the simplicity of it. 4. McLaren MP4 -12C. Quite possibly the cutest supercar there ever is. I'd say it's even better looking than it's successor, the McLaren 650S. 5. The original Fiat 500. Italian design and ingenuity. Italy did not have access to much amount of steel, so the designers had to minimize the quantity of steel required per car while maximising effective space inside. This design was the best at it during it's time. And it's so cute. 6. The original Mini Cooper. The adorable little Mini Cooper, designed at a time when expense mattered much more than safety of occupants. Somehow, it's much better looking than the new edition, which is obviously much more safer. 7. BMW X5 first generation (1999–2006) I don't know why I like the looks of this particular model more than the current one, but I really do. Of course, the newer model is much more safer, reliable and capable than this one. But I still prefer this. 8. Ferrari F40. If Lamborghini had the Countach, Ferrari had the F40. So very desirable and so very beautiful. 9. Fiat 124 Spider 2017. Possibly the best looking sports car money can buy. There are cars that cost much more than this one, which offer much more power and speed and better handling than the little Fiat. But this tiny sports car trumps them all when it comes to looks. 10. Rover SD1 of the 1970s and 80s. We all remember the TopGear episode in which Jeremy Clarkson drove one of these built by British Leyland to prove the point that these were built quite shabbily. Also, Indians know this car as the Standard 2000, which was marketed as a luxury automobile back in the day. But it's a breathtakingly beautiful car. 11. Mercedes Benz SL convertible from the 1980s. One of the sexiest ragtops of all time. Also, built by Mercedes when they made cars that were extremely reliable. The European version is shown here, the American variant had uglier headlamp arrangement and longer, protruding bumpers, which was bad looking, but in accordance with U.S. laws of the time regarding automobile bumpers and headlamps. 12. The Citroen DS (1955–1975) One of the best examples of a car being way ahead of time. Citroen gave prime importance to aerodynamics and style while they drew up this car. Extremely beautiful to behold, and an epitome of French car design prowess. 13. The Peugeot 405 (1987–1995) Just the right amount of plastic cladding on the sides and the most interesting boxy car of the 1980s. The Car as we drew it as children, although a lot of American cars could compete for that position. 14. The Lincoln Continental 1961. Huge American land yacht with suicide doors. What's not to like ? Elegant and beautiful car. 15. The DeLorean DMC —12. Stainless steel body. Back to the future movie franchise. Gull wing doors. Probably the only car in the world to be sold only because of the way it looked, as it was marketed as a sports car ( it's wasn't fast enough) and failed to live up to expectations. My fingers are still moving about the screen to add yet another car to this list as my brain says: 'Stop. You'll never finish this list to your heart's content. Stop before you run out of phone battery.’ And so I decide to stop enumerating all the cars to be included into ‘the beautiful cars of all time' list.

What happened to Rover (car company)?

Rover during the 1950’s dished out the P5 which was a great car. A car with an exquisite design and brilliant build quality dependable and cheap. It was actually driven by the Queen for fun!!!! As a result everybody brought it and sales went through the roof. This was followed by another great car the P6. Then Rover was taken over by British Leyland!! Not such a great idea when you consider it produced the Marina, the Austin 1800 and Allegro!!! It launched the Sd1 (Rover 3500) which was well like a good looking drunk girlfriend. It was well exquisite, it looked a bit like a Ferrari Daytona, the Rover styling department had done an outstanding job but when people brought it they realised that the build quality was well hideous!!! The car would simply rust away if exposed to moisture. If that didn't happen the part would just simply fall off like the door, the bumper. This dented the reputation of Rover. Then to redeem themselves they joined forces with Honda to produce the Rover 800. I mean this would be a deadly combination wouldn't it Rover with its expertise in styling and Honda’s build quality. Unfortunately this also went badly wrong. The door didn't fit and the dashboard would curl up in hot weather. Then they set about trying to get Honda to build a car and then put a Rover badge on it!!!!! Well even that didn't work surprisingly!!!!!!! Then they tried to join forces with BMW with quite a lumpsome amount of money. Along with the assistance of BMW they produced the Rover 75. The car was good yet it was just too old. The really white interior gave it a feel of an old Palace and it rather gave a feeling that we were going back in time. I mean it was like Rover was trying to use their old formula for success and was not up with the times. Rover failed to repay BMW it's money and the deal ended in 2000. Then Rover went to a 3rd world manufacturer TATA located in India and well they produced the CITY ROVER this was the worst car in their history ever. It seemed now like it was the end. Rover had literally out of money. Had to pay thousands of employees. Another car the ZTV—1 was OK but no where near as good as it's rival car manufacturers BMW, Audi etc hence hardly any sales an sadly in 2005 Rover went completely bust and shut down. They don't produce cars anymore in the UK. Such a tragic story. I feel so disheartened. Thank you for reading.

Why doesn't the Indian market have performance cars?

India did.. all be it in highly down-tuned or outdated variants. This is discounting the recent crop of European “luxury” brands with the odd US or Japanese models sold in small numbers. Standard 2000 or better known in the UK as the Rover SD1 - some say it was copied off the Ferrari Daytona while others suggest it was the Italians who went to the future and copied British Leyland… Top Gear joke Anyhow… the one India got was a peppy car compared to what the population had access to back in the olden days. Nothing that could go faster than 75 KMPH, not that the roads could really accommodate that speed. Quite an unreliable piece of BL leftovers sent and sold in India and later stopped as the Indian company had lied about the fuel economy outright. ,Did they all sell with the BMC series motor in India? Readers can comment on that. Standard 2000 | A Story of Poor Build Quality & False Claims,. Wish it had the Rover 3.5 V8 to really call it a “performance car” So no…. not really. It was not a performance car as such but for what was available at that time in India, ok. The story of the Standard 2000. 1985-1988 Next up, the Indian muscle car Another BL product for the Indian auto sector Vauxhall Victor - Wikipedia, rebadged as the Contessa Classic A big roomy, comfy 4 door sedan that had all the levels of comfort - soft was sponge suspension and seats that were good enough to sleep in, given the rallycross conditioned roads in the country back then and now in few cities. Not a pure performance car per se but again, one needs to take into context what was available for sale, apart from those few “imported” cars from the gulf. Again, had the same BMC motor and later updated with the powerplant from Isuzu which gave it more oomph but truly wish they initially gave it the Rover V8 as all these were from BL staples. Then, people would have not bothered about the fuel economy and just drove to hear the V8 rumble. Hindustan Contessa - Wikipedia Discontinued right around the time the Koreans and new Japanese entrants came in and started the next phase of newer and “better” cars for the masses. Maybe there was some exception given to BL to send these to India given they also had a partnership with Ashok Leyland? Beyond these, another that sort of came close to the performance car category was the Lancer Many in the country were aware of the exploits of the legendary Lancer Evo platforms in the WRC and the cult following the brand had developed. What India got was the original Lancer, till the Evo 4 which went on a couple of years back. Really no updates nor any real performance improvements on the platform. I suppose the badge helped it sell to the aficionados. Given the issues, Mitsubishi has had, doubt we will see much more from them. Also, given the taxes and the fuel prices in the country, “performance” cars were just too small a market, even compared to a small European country, and no real appetite to bring the fast ones - look at Ford. Many who know the brand well hoped to see the Focus but we came sort of close with the Fusion 1.6 and now left with the Figo. What if Ford was also selling cars in India at the same time as the Contessa and Standard 2000? Could we have seen a Ford Cortina instead of the Escort and Ikon instead?… that too not detuned? Ford Cortina - Wikipedia,. What would you have preferred to see in the country back in the day? Let's leave out the exotic stuff and look at maybe the VW Golf or a Renault Clio or how about a Peugeot 205 GTI?

Why do car companies not design their cars to make them look like a Ferrari, Porsche, etc.?

I don't know how to post pictures but google Rover SD1. Rover designed the sensible family saloon to look like a Ferrari Daytona. Hyundai made a car Based on a discarded Bentley design and the Coupe was styled like a Ferrari 456. Toyota made the Mk2 MR2 look Like a Ferrari and the mk3 was based on an unused Porsche design. Ford styled the current mondeo to look like an Aston Martin. The Peugeot 406 coupe took a lot from an unused Ferrari design. What I'm getting at i what you are suggesting happens all the time.

What's a car you loved at first sight that you ended up hating later?

The Rover SD1. I was a kid and I knew nothing about anything, but I knew I liked this car. I thought Rover must have some very clever car designers who knew what the future looked like. It doesn’t look like much now, but it did at the time, especially with a body kit. For years, I thought it was great, and I liked Rover because it of it. Then I saw the Ferrari Daytona. And I realised that Rover had lifted quite a lot of the design of this earlier car.
