ford bcm repair Q&A Review

What is the best truck on the North American market today in terms of value? Not just in terms of fuel economy and specs, but also taking into consideration ease of repair and torque. Thanks for your opinion!

What Jason said. The Toyota variety is very well build and the F150 gives you a lot of truck for the money. Don't overlook the GM varieties, Chevy or GMC. Those a decent trucks. I wouldn't give a Dodge product a second look! Chrysler quality has taken a dive! As far as ease of repair I have to say that if you buy a new one you won't have to worry about that as all have a reasonable good factory warranty. If you are considering used and out of warranty then buy the oldest truck that is in very good shape and make doesn't matter then. The farthest you go upwards from 1996 when OBD2 came in and later on CAN, the more expensive and difficult it is to repair these things without expensive bi directional scan tools and a very good understanding of electronics. You will have to deal with a variety of modules from PCM's to BCM's , climate control processors, traction control electronics, electronic 4x4 activation etc. You might want to stay away from some particular models and engines if you buy used. The three valve Triton 5.4 lt from Ford from I believe 2004 to 2008 with the notorious spark plugs that used to break during removal. It isn't a big deal anymore as they have developed a very good tool to repair this issue but still, it ain't a pleasant job. Also, exhaust manifolds have a tendency to warp and crack the bolts. Again that can be a very expensive repair. Especially if the bolts won't come out of the cylinder head . The engine in itself is fairly reliable, and it can last a long time. I have seen these things with over 300,000km on them. But if something goes wrong with it internally it will be very costly to repair. Not so with any GM products. They have used the basic engine with upgrades here and there and varying displacements for decades ! The engines are almost bullet proof other than minor shenanigans that are easy to fix. The only thing you have to watch for with older GM trucks with ABS is the condition of the brake lines. They will rust in areas where road salt is used and they can be very expensive to repair....mostly due to the labour time it takes to replace them all. The suspension components on GM trucks and GM in general as in ball joints and steering joints are excellent! They can last a very long time. The same cannot be said about Fords.

What is the best car brand? Are French cars any good?

It depends on what you want . If you want prestige and speed then you have to buy a Ferrari. If you want reliability, ease of maintenance and longevity then it has to be a Toyota. ISIS uses Toyotas ! These assholes may not know much about anything but they sure know what vehicles will not break down in the desert. I am a professional automotive technician and I have to say I make less money on my customers that own Toyotas. I myself drive a 2003 Ford Ranger and a 1998 Acura. My wife drives a 2012 Chevrolet Impala . Both are excellent brands…with some exceptions. As a professional mechanic I want to spend as little time fixing my own cars. I love French food but their cars are not haute cuisine . German cars on the other hand are over engineered. When I need two guys and a scanner to check the transmission fluid level and have to charge 0.6 to do so I know I do not want to own one of these things. When I cannot check the wiper operation without “fooling” the BCM to “think” the hood is closed then I do not want to have anything to do with German cars. For reliability, longevity, ease of repair nothing beats a Toyota. In my customer base I have several clients with Toyota vehicles in the 200 plus mileage range. I am not employed by Toyota… I do not get royalties from Toyota..I do not own a Toyota …

What is causing my 2003 Ford Expedition to turn on by itself electrically, causing my truck to not start?

Usually water has been entering the under dash fuse block. Disconnect the battery and remove that fuse block look closely at the terminals where the wire connectors were attached. If you see signs of corrosion, even slight then you have corrosion from water damage inside the fuse block. It should be replaced. These days though, many of those are unavailable new. Try a Ford dealer first, see if you can get one and at least get the most current part #. Using the part # on your block and the part # from the dealer you may be able to find a used one online. Used are kind of a wild shot since they may have the same water problem. You want to make sure the number is for your truck because they aren’t all the same. A small module is attached to the back of the block near the connector plugs. That is your gem/bcm you save that and transfer it to your replacement fuse block. Sometimes the gem is bad too but you can’t really tell until after you get a clean block and install it. The corrosion causes circuits to turn radio, dome lamps and such on when it should just be resting. After all the repair is done you need to get the windshield replaced, Ford said the water is coming in along the windshield seal but you can have that verified at a body shop that does water leak tests/repairs.
