Four BYD showrooms in Hong Kong recently experienced a series of vandalism attacks causing damage and disruption to the facilities recently.
The incidents, categorised as criminal damage by the Hong Kong police, took place within a span of three hours in the districts of central Hong Kong, Kowloon, and the New Territories.
All attacks involved a modus operandi of throwing red paint and/or smashing security gates of the premises. In one case, a 2-litre paint can was retrieved nearby the showroom.
Although the motive behind these attacks remains unknown, CCTV footage of all premises are being examined by the police, and investigations are ongoing.
A General Manager of sales at of one the BYD premises (JCM Lianda Auto) told Hong Kong Economic Times that he believes this is not a typical act of revenge but suspects perpetrators are targeting the entire BYD brand.
Following the incidents, three of the four BYD facilities said they will resume operations after necessary cleanup is done, the centre with a smashed gate will reopen after repair works are done.
Closer to home, BYD is charting steady progress on the back of strong demand for the BYD Atto 3 SUV. More recently, dealer Sisma Auto opened the largest BYD 3S centre in Glenmarie; the largest in Malaysia, which is able to service up to 1,000 customers monthly.
