BMW has unveiled the Vision Neue Klasse X SUV concept, the second installment in BMW’s showcase of models built on its Neue Klasse dedicated battery-electric (BEV) platform. This also previews the next-generation BMW iX3, slated to hit production lines in 2025.

First and frontmost, the grille. The Vision Neue Klasse X boasts a vertical grille exclusive to forthcoming BMW SUVs, which is said to symbolise ruggedness and verticality. It also pays homage to classics like the 2002. Conversely, sedans will sport variations of the full-width kidney grille, signifying width and dynamism.

Incorporating traditional two-box SUV proportions, the concept maintains BMW’s traditional cab-rearward design that gives an athletic stance.

CEO Oliver Zipse provided insights into the technological marvel that underpins the Neue Klasse platform. Central to its operation are four powerful “supercomputers,” each dedicated to specific functions crucial for optimal performance.

Among these, one collaboratively developed with chipmaker Qualcomm will oversee assisted driving capabilities, promising a “quantum leap” in this domain. BMW’s vision for the platform extends beyond just convenience, aiming for Level 2+ hands-off, eyes-on driving, and even Level 3 autonomy.

The electric drivetrain runs on an 800V system, enabling rapid charging that BMW says can add up to 300 km of range in 10 minutes.

The Neue Klasse platform utilises new cylindrical batteries, which is claimed to offer 20 percent higher energy density than BMW’s current prismatic cells, resulting in a 30 percent range increase compared to existing BEV models.

Inside, the concept embraces a, for the lack of a better word, minimalist approach. Don’t worry, indicator stalks are still present and will probably continue to be ignored. Interaction with the car centres around a central display screen, steering wheel-mounted buttons, and voice commands.

The Panoramic Vision display spans the windshield’s base, which complements the head-up display. Dynamic colour changes within the strip reflect the driver’s selected mode.

Scheduled for production next year, the production version of the Vision Neue Klasse X SUV (iX3) will roll off the assembly lines at BMW’s plant in Debrecen, Hungary, while the sedan (slated to become the next-gen 3 Series) will be produced in Munich, Germany.

Expansion plans extend globally, with production slated for Shenyang, China, by 2026 and San Luis Potosi, Mexico, by 2027.
