Chery Omoda 5 GT now in Indonesia; more powerful with 200 PS 1.6 TGDi, multi-link suspension; prices equal up to RM 148k

The Chery Omoda 5 GT has set into the ASEAN region after its Indonesian launch. It's claim to fame is that it's the most powerful of the (petrol) model range, and also available in all-wheel drive (AWD) configuration.
Its 'GT' suffix brings with it a 1.6-litre turbocharged inline-four engine, making 200 PS and 290 Nm; paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Two drivetrain configurations are available: front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-whel drive.
This combo is a 43 PS and 50 Nm bump from the 1.5-litre turbo mill (157 PS/230 Nm) and CVT combo that's in the exclusively-FWD, earlier-launched Omoda 5 Z and RZ variants, similar to the Malaysian-spec car.
The other big news is that GT variants get a multi-link rear suspension array too, unlike the 1.5-litre cars that come with a torsion beam at the back.
Beyond what's under the metal, GT variants are marked by orange details on the outside, a piano black centre stack (replacing matte grey), a splash guard, and soft touch materials by the doors. The GT AWD variant gains a driver monitoring camera, and a 50W wireless phone charger.
The introduction of the GT variants ups the Omoda 5 variant count in Indonesia to four, with deliveries scheduled for November 2023. Prices for the locally-assembled (CKD Bekasi, West Java) model are as below:
Omoda 5 Z 1.5T: IDR 334.8 mil (~RM 102k)
Omoda 5 RZ 1.5T: IDR 404.8 mil (~RM 123k)
Omoda 5 GT 1.6T FWD: IDR 448.8 mil (~RM 136k)
Omoda 5 GT 1.6T AWD: IDR 488.8 mil (~ RM 148k)
The Omoda 5 GT's debut in the archipelago also marks the first time this powertrain combo is made available to our part of the world – before this it was only available in China.
However this combination is trickling to right-hand drive markets; before the Indonesian launch, there were reports out of Australia confirming the Omoda 5 1.6T arriving Down Under in 2024.
The situation for Malaysia is still pending further announcements. As it is, Chery Malaysia offers 2 variants of the SUV, both with the 1.5T + CVT pairing, priced from RM 108,800 (Omoda 5 C) and RM 118,800 (Omoda 5 H).
