It’s no secret that Chery is plotting a return to Malaysia, with a number of SUVs planned out. Among the SUVs earmarked for Malaysia include the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro, Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, and Chery Omoda 5.
At a recent online interview session with Chery’s management team, it was revealed that the first 3 units of the aforementioned SUVs are en route from China to Malaysia and are expected to reach our shores over the coming months.
These SUVs won’t be for sale just yet; instead, the Tiggo 7 Pro, Tiggo 8 Pro, and Omoda 5 that are arriving here is for preview purposes, specifically dealer and media previews. And as such, they are right-hand drive units and are likely close to Malaysian specs.
On top of that, these SUVs will also serve as a sneak peak for selected potential customers.
As a brief recap, the Chery Omoda 5 aims squarely at B-segment SUVs like the recently launched Honda HR-V and Toyota Corolla Cross. Depending on variant, the Omoda 5 can be had with two turbocharged mills, a 1.5-litre unit (156 PS, 230 Nm) and a 1.6-litre unit (197 PS, 290 Nm). The lower output one gets a CVT-type automatic, while the more powerful one gets a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.
Chery Tiggo 7 Pro is a Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5 rival. It gets a turbocharged 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine that does 147 PS and 210 Nm, mated to a CVT transmission.
Then there’s the Tiggo 8 Pro, which aims at the 7-seater SUV market, including the massive Hyundai Santa Fe. The Tiggo 8 Pro is powered by a turbocharged 1.6-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine that does 197 PS and 290 Nm, hooked up to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.
In order to keep prices competitive against rivals, Chery has announced that they are in talks with local partners to establish local assembly (CKD) operations for its models.
