BMW Thailand launched a trio of models in the Kingdom over the weekend and first up is the 2023 BMW X5 (G05) facelift or in Bimmer terms, Life Cycle Impulse (LCI). The updated G05 first made its debut in February 2023 and compared to the Bavarian’s recent offerings, it has a more conservative look.

Given that this is just a facelift, it might even be the last time we see the X5 with a design that doesn’t shout “keyboard-equipped discussions”. Anyway, the updated X5 in Thailand only covers two variants:

• X5 xDrive30d M Sport – THB 5.099 million (~RM 675k)
• X5 xDrive50e M Sport – THB 5.399 million (~RM 715k)

While the iconic kidney grilles remain mostly intact, the headlights are now slimmer by 35 mm and feature arrow-shaped DRLs that point outwards as well as serve as turn signal indicators. Remaining at the front, the front side panels are now redesigned for a sportier look for the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV).

At the rear are sculptural fibre-optic light guide elements for the taillights with striking contouring that illuminates with an X motif.

In terms of infotainment, the updated X5 features a curved display which is powered by BMW Operating System 8 and is also equipped with the latest generation of the iDrive control. A Harmon Kardon surround system is equipped on the diesel variant while Bowers & Wilkin Diamond surround system is fitted on the PHEV variant.

Powering the diesel variant of the updated Thai-spec G05 is a 3.0-litre inline-6 twin-scrolled turbodiesel engine that is paired with a 48V mild hybrid system to produce a maximum combined output of 298 PS/670 Nm. The powertrain is mated to an 8-speed Steptronic Sport Transmission while the maximum speed is rated at 233 km/h.

Meanwhile, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant sees the 3.0-litre twin turbo 6-cylinder petrol unit join forces with an electric motor to produce a combined system output of 489 PS and 700 Nm. This system is also paired with an 8-speed Steptronic Sport Transmission with a top speed of 250 km/h. It also has an electrical range of 113 km under NEDC ratings.

Besides powertrains, another difference between the two updated G05 variants in Thailand is the suspension setup. The diesel-powered X5 comes with adaptive M suspension while the PHEV variant is equipped with adaptive two-axle air suspension.

In terms of safety, both variants are equipped with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Park Distance Control (PDC), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), and Active Protection. The PHEV variant adds acoustic protection for pedestrians in its line of safety features.

With the G05 X5 LCI making its landing in Thailand, it’s only a matter of time before it arrives in Malaysia. Currently, the outgoing pre-facelift is still listed for sale in the country with a lone locally assembled (CKD) variant:
