If there’s a category for the quirkiest car on sale at any Car of the Year award ceremony, the Suzuki Jimny might sweep the category because no other car can match it. Of course, we’re excluding other kei-sized vans or cars on sale in recond dealers because those do not count in official award ceremonies.
Despite looking small, the Malaysian-spec Jimny does not qualify as a kei vehicle. In fact, the model sold globally is called the Jimny Sierra in Japan with those wide wheelarches, bumpers, and the naturally aspirated 1.5-litre 4-cylinder (102 PS/130 Nm) unit.
Still, even if the length and width are slightly larger than the kei-approved Jimny 660-cc in Japan, the wheelbase remains the same, so you get a tiny interior with just enough space for 2. The rear seats are laughably small but when you’re going for a trip, the Jimny takes the saying ‘two’s company, three’s a crowd’ quite literally.
In Malaysia, the Jimny is only offered in one variant with the 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission. From that transmission alone, the Jimny feels like an interesting retro number that matches the overall design.
Yet, it’s that simplicity that makes the Jimny all so forgiving as it is designed to go anywhere with a ladder-frame chassis, the 3-link rigid axle with coil link suspension, and the Allgrip Pro 4WD system.
There are even plenty of aftermarket accessories to really bring out the Jimny’s personality whether you want to turn it into a capable overlander or a mini G-Wagen.
The Suzuki Jimny is priced from RM 174,900 on the road, without insurance and comes with a 3-year/100,000-km warranty. If you want to check out this unique and more than capable off-roader, come on over to the Carlist.my Drive Auto Fair at the Setia Alam Convention Centre from 1-3 September 2023, Friday to Sunday, from 10 am to 8 pm.
Besides the Jimny, there are also many cars available to check out and if you’ve decided to book one at the Drive Auto Fair, you are entitled to enter a lucky draw to win up to RM 4,000 in cash!
