The truth is that average person either cannot or doesn’t want to repair a car. Even if it would be possible to do at home. That’s why manufacturers are rather making cars that require ,minimum ,repairs. Suppose, manufacturers suddenly start making cars that can be serviceable in your home garage. Now, how many of you, guys, would be willing to clean and adjust its carbs once a year? Adjust ignition spacings? Change water pump? Change wirings, if necessary? What about your spouses? Or teenage sons? I don’t have a car from 70’s. But I do have two outboards from 1981 that I am repairing myself. I have these motors simply because I bought them cheap; very cheap. I am not a hardcore mechanic and can do only basic repairs like mentioned above. Still my friends and co-workers - all of them are computer engineers and many have Ph.D. degrees - rather see me as a Siberian shaman who can magically return the ignition spark from the world of the dead. Most of them don’t know the difference between a carburetor and a piston. I spent few weeks just reading manuals and learning how to do basic maintenance and tune-ups on those engines. After I learned all these things, I need to spend “only” 2–3 weekends at the beginning of the season just to make sure these engine will work during the summer. By “working” I mean that after a sufficient amount of manipulation with choke, trottle and obscene lexic these motors will eventually start. On a contrast, I have a Nissan XTerra SUV that has 5 years and 70000 miles on it. I don’t know how to repair it. But it is irrelevant. You know why? Because this car never broke; it never failed to start; it never required anything but oil change and tire rotation. And you know what? That’s damn good. That saves me lots of time and money. Once my outboard engines will die completely, I will go and by myself modern ones. Although I’m unlikely to be able to do all the repairs on these new motors, they will start at a turn of a key and will be order of magnitude more reliable then what I have now.
If there was no note on the car, the repair would be worth it. With the note, it probably is as well, the only thing there is the mileage. Nissans, Hondas, and Toyotas seem to be all the same later in life. Great low maintenance cars until items start wearing out. Then they’re a money pit. If maintenance of the car throughout the years is sketchy, I would buy a new car instead.
