What current cars will be classics one day and worth holding on to?
Great question. There are different reasons for a car to be a collectible classic. Limited production. So if it is rare when new, it has a good chance of being a classic. It represented the first- or last — of its kind. It is a specialty vehicle. A roadster will more likely be a classic than an SUV. The design is strikingly different even in its own time, let alone 25 years later. The company / model/ is no longer around. Example: any Studebaker is a classic and has been for a long time. So what cars bring sold new now or very recently, are likely candidates? Honda Civic SI and Type R. Ford Focus RS, Fiesta ST, Focus ST, Toyota Yaris GR, Corvette C8 and C7, Subaru STI, Lotus Evora, Mustang GT350 and GT500. Audi R8/R10. Notice a pattern? Cars that are desirable now will be even more so when all you can buy new is soulless electric cars. That drive themselves. First they take away the stick shift and clutch pedal. Then they take away the interbal combustion engine, glorious sound and all. Finally they take away the driver. A dystopian future to be sure.

The problem is NOT the import tariffs ! What people want is to sell more cars across the Atlantic. Read : US cars to be sold in Europe. Lets say TTIP was actually implemented, all tariffs to 0%. You’d expect that Europeans would buy as many US cars as Americans were buying German cars. This is not correct. I don’t know how it is in other nations within the EU, but in The Netherlands there is a Vehicle Registration Tax that is calculated on the CO2 emission. The more polluting the vehicle is, the more tax is put on it. I like Ford’s, EU types but also American models like the Mustang. Also Chevy : Camaro and Corvette, regrettably, I will never be able to buy any of those, here. They are too expensive due to the tax. Following cars I would actually consider driving, the cost will make me choose among them. Ford Focus V4, 122 co2 gr/km ((122–98)*139)+2077 = €5389 Mustang Ecoboost V4, 179 co2 gr/km : ((179–162)*458)+12593=€20375 Mercedes 63 AMG V8, 192 co2 gr/km ((192–162)*458)+12593=€26333 Mustang V8, 299 co2 gr/km : ((299–162)*458)+12593=€75339 ! Camaro V8, 304 co2 gr/km : ((304–162)*458)+12593=€77629 ! Mind you, this is just the added tax, add this to the car cost and enjoy. Take your American price for a Camaro, add the BPM and you will understand why dutch people don’t drive those. For comparison I added the Mercedes, although also a V8, it’s emission is quite a bit lower, resulting in a much lower tax. Anyway, it is not about import taxes on US cars, it’s the damn (VRT) BPM that is calculated over EVERY car no matter where it comes from. The worse it is for the environment, the more it costs. The Ford Focus is also an American brand, build in Germany for the EU market and look ….. the emission is low. Make US cars cleaner and Europeans will fall in love with Camaro’s, Corvettes and Mustangs as well. I wonder why Chevrolet won’t design a Corvette with a V4 and add a turbo for the European market. The tax would be considerable lower. ps. The fuel price for petrol currently sits at €1,75 per liter That would make $7,60 for a gallon. Would you still drive a Camaro V8 ? Good point, yes we do, Tesla’s are actually sold here, the BPM (VRT) on whichever type of Tesla is only €356 (Car cost + €356) + 21% VAT = selling in The Netherlands and probably in other European nations although I do not know about the taxes except my own country. Tesla Model 3 : USD 35.000 : (€30.398+356)+21% VAT = €37.212,34 consumer price.
