    Jaguar F-Type – Overview

The Jaguar F-Type is a strict two-seat sportscar from the renowned British manufacturer where it is also marketed as “the spiritual successor to the famous E-Type.” Originally designed as a soft-top convertible in 2013 like the original icon, a fixed-roof coupe was launched a year later, with the USA its key market.

The Jaguar F-Type has undergone a facelift in 2020 and is available in coupe or convertible over a range of three different engines. The Jaguar F-Type in Malaysia is priced from RM 579,037.41 for the turbocharged 2.0L coupe under the P300 naming.

Other variants such as the convertible, the P450 and P575 or Jaguar F-Type R (both 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engines), are only ordered upon special applications by the customers. Competitors include the Toyota GR Supra, Porsche 911, Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe, BMW 8 Series, Lexus LC as well the ageing Maserati GranTurismo and Audi R8.

    Jaguar F-Type – Exterior

As mentioned earlier, a facelift was done to the Jaguar F-Type seven years after its initial public debut in 2013. In line with modern styling as well as technology, slimmer front and rear lights and reprofiled bumpers are the main changes together with an accompanying new bonnet that was inspired by beautiful Jaguar cars from the past.

Almost everywhere you look, from any angle, the Jaguar F-Type is one of the reasons and great example of why we fall in love with sportscars at first sight. The balanced proportion of a long bonnet, tapering windscreen and a short tail/boot has always evoked a sense of speed and beauty.

The Jaguar F-Type features all-aluminium construction, ensuring lightweight as well as a high level of rigidity. Newly designed signature J-Blade LED daytime running lights give the Jaguar F-Type a striking presence whilst asserting its powerful stance. At the rear, the signature tail lamps with a simple horizontal lighting beam emphasize on width and stance.

A rear spoiler automatically deploys as the vehicle goes faster, increasing stability. Jaguar has set out exhaust outlet is powertrain identifiers- the Jaguar F-Type P300 with the 2.0-litre engine gets a singular large central outlet, while both V8 engines of the P450 and F-Type R have quad exhaust system. The Jaguar F-Type R also has more aerodynamic elements on the front and rear bumpers, side skirts and larger 20-inch wheels. Standard wheels on the P300 are 18-inch items.

  • Interior

    Jaguar F-Type – Interior

    Dashboard

Compared to current offerings from rivals, the dashboard of the Jaguar F-Type is fairly straightforward for a clutter-free layout. The company calls it’s it a 1+1 layout, with a rather obtrusive diagonal grab bar occupying the knee space of the passenger.

In the facelift design, the central air vents of the Jaguar F-Type continue to be a pop-up mechanism, which hides away and is flush with the dashboard once the ignition is off. A quick show of theatricals rather than functional especially in our hot and humid tropical climate.

In the Jaguar F-Type R, the extended leather package wraps the dashboard with quality leather.
The 2020 Jaguar F-Type facelift also took the opportunity to modernize the instruments cluster, infotainment system, switches as well as the steering wheel.

The door panel in the Jaguar F-Type meanwhile house the power adjustment switches for the seats and memory function that also saves the position of the power-adjustable steering column, which is only available in the range-topping Jaguar F-Type R.

    Instrument cluster

The instrument cluster in the Jaguar F-Type is a new 12.3-inch fully digital unit with a high degree of customization. The graphics are sharp and in high resolution added with specific Jaguar F-Type theme and the central tachometer set as default underlining its sports car pedigree.

    Space and practicality

Thanks to the design of the long rear windscreen that also lifts to access the boot, the rear storage space is cavernous at 336 litres, or more practically, two large suitcases. The Jaguar F-Type’s boot space on convertible is naturally smaller at 132 litres, which Jaguar says can comfortably accommodate two pieces of hand luggage for a weekend trip.

In the cabin of the Jaguar F-Type, occupants have storage on the lower console and central armrest. Opening the glovebox is another event itself with a beautifully crafted metallic switch. A tiny storage net, sufficient for some envelopes and perhaps a powerbank is placed on the partition board immediately behind the seats.

  • Features

    Jaguar F-Type – Features

    Safety features

There are 6 airbags in the Jaguar F-Type coupe model. For the roofless Jaguar F-Type convertible, roll bars behind the seats not only look good but also protect occupants in the event of an unfortunate mishap. Autonomous Emergency Braking and lane departure warning is standard fitted in the Jaguar F-Type, while other ADAS features can be included optionally. A rear-view camera aids with parking the Jaguar F-Type.

    Comfort features

The sports seats in the Jaguar F-Type P300 have six-way power adjustment and wrapped with leather-suede cloth combination, while the air-conditioning system is a single-zone automatic unit. Other luxurious features include electronically adjustable steering column, premium carpet mats, electric parking brake and Clearsight digital rearview mirror.

The Jaguar F-Type R meanwhile adds 12-way power adjustable Performance seats with Windsor high-quality leather upholstery on the seats and dashboard. The ambient lighting in this range-topping variant has more colours as well as changes to sporty red when the Dynamic drive mode is engaged.

    Infotainment

The Jaguar F-Type features a 10-inch touch display called Touch Pro that supports intuitive control of the navigation, audio and other systems by directly touching the screen like a smartphone. The system is easy to use with large icons and operating menu that is not layered with too many sub menus. It also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity.

Great sound is channeled to the interior via Jaguar’s exclusive audio partner, Meridian. The 8-speaker setup has high-performance speakers placed strategically in the interior of the Jaguar F-Type with low frequency bass levels boosted by two subwoofers. Total amplifier output is 380 Watts. The range-topping Jaguar F-Type R meanwhile gets the fully-loaded Meridian Surround Sound system with 10 speakers and 770-watt amplifier.

  • Powertrain

    Jaguar F-Type – Powertrain

    Engine

The Jaguar F-Type P300 comes with the Jaguar Land Rover Group’s Ingenium turbocharged four-2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that develops 300 PS at 5,500 rpm and 400 Nm of torque from 1,500 to 4,500 rpm. 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engines meanwhile are reserved for the Jaguar F-Type P450 with 450 PS at 6,000 rpm and 580 Nm at 2,500 to 5,000 rpm and the Jaguar F-Type R. In the Jaguar F-Type R, performance is further refined and increased to 575 PS at 6,500 rpm and a colossal 700 Nm at 3,500 to 5,000 rpm.

    Transmission

The Jaguar F-Type has a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission that has a very wide ratio coverage which contributes to optimum fuel economy, high rate of acceleration plus very fast shifting. Large steering wheel-mounted shift paddles are standard in the Jaguar F-Type, with the range-topping F-Type R getting paddles made from aluminium.

    Chassis

The Jaguar F-Type is suspended by multi-link arrangement, with high usage of aluminium. Large brake discs in 355 mm front and 325 mm rear diameter provide confident stopping power, but larger diameter and coloured multi piston calipers for the F-Type R.

The drive mode in the Jaguar F-Type meanwhile has a Dynamic mode that switches the powertrain to be more responsive. Torque vectoring effect is applied via the brakes to enable better cornering and tracing. Befitting its status as range-topping and highest level of performance, the Jaguar F-Type R has an electronically active rear differential for maximum traction exiting corners.

    Drivetrain

The Jaguar F-Type P300 is a rear-wheel drive luxury sportscar, while there is an option for all-wheel drive for the P450 variant. The full-fledged P575 is only available with all-wheel drive. Called Intelligent Driveline Dynamics, the F-Type is predominantly a rear-wheel drive sportscar but traction is applied to the front axle even before it is required.

  • Driving Performance

    Jaguar F-Type – Driving Performance

    Engine performance

The Jaguar F-Type P300 with 300 PS and 400 Nm of torque can complete the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 5.7 seconds. The Jaguar F-Type P450 with 450 PS and 580 Nm shaves 1.1 seconds of its four-cylinder sibling’s time. As for the flagship Jaguar F-Type R with 575 PS, 700 Nm and all-wheel drive traction, the century sprint is completed in just 3.7 seconds.
Drivers in the V8 engine variants of the Jaguar F-Type can add more drama to announce their arrival via the switchable active exhaust that opens for a more vocal presence.

    Transmission performance

The ZF 8-speed automatic transmission is perhaps the best in the business, with a wide ratio spread to provide fast and responsive acceleration, quick and smooth shift qualities and return respectable fuel consumption and noise refinement.
In the Jaguar F-Type, the P300 always ready eager to accelerate with a very linear mapping with the throttle pedal. Shifting in manual mode is fast and downshifts are accompanied by a sweet engine blip or rev-matching.

    Steering and handling

Jaguar has done plenty of development work in fine-tuning the dynamics of the Jaguar F-Type and introduced the new suspension the facelift model. The Jaguar F-Type is now more agile with a more responsive steering and more settled body control, especially during hard acceleration.

We also feel the P300 with a much lighter 2.0-litre engine upfront is nimbler and more responsive compared to the V8 engines. However, when compared to the Porsche 911, the Jaguar F-Type shows its weakness of breaching its limit sooner. Nonetheless, the Jaguar F-Type is a great sportscar that wins the attention because it is not another 911 in KLCC or Mont Kiara.

  • Ride Comfort

    Jaguar F-Type – Ride Comfort

    Sound Proofing

The noise levels in the Jaguar F-Type is within reasonable limits, not too much noise entering the cabin.

    Passenger Comfort

The ride has been made more pleasant and supple from the 2020 facelift timing. The Jaguar F-Type now absorbs bumps much better in all driving modes as well as in the P300 without the adaptive suspension.
Overall, it feels like a smooth grand tourer.

  • Fuel Consumption

    Jaguar F-Type – Fuel Economy

    The Jaguar F-Type 2.0L P300 delivers a fuel consumption rating of 9.8 litres per 100 km (10.2 km/L). The P450 and higher tune R V8 engines meanwhile returns a respectable 10.8 litres per 100 km (9.2 km/L).

  • Conclusion

    Jaguar F-Type – Conclusion

Even after seven years, the Jaguar F-Type just needed slimmer headlamps (where technology allowed) and it looks as gorgeous as ever. There is no denying that its beauty gains plenty of attention, either in the coupe or convertible styling.
In the 2.0-litre P300, the sportscar is fast enough with an added bonus of the entry price below RM600,000.

The lighter front end also entertained us more, with a nicer feel at the steering, more agile handling and never skipped a beat with the automatic transmission. Surely, four-cylinder cannot hide its character even with active exhaust, but given its looks, going a little slower and quieter means having more meaningful conversation with your partner.
