mazda mx 60 Q&A Review

How does the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata with the updated 181hp engine compare to the Honda S2000?

It's still about 60HP less than the S2000 had, but the power is slightly more usable as you don't have to rev the absolute piss out of it to get there. It is still slower than the S2000. 0–60 5.1 vs 5.7 1/4 mile 14.1 vs 14.5 In the real world, that's not much of a difference. The new Miata is very refined and a lot easier to drive at the limit vs the S2000, but the S2000 is a more visceral experience. So it really comes down to what you want. Do you want to try and find a S2000 that has someone survived all this time without being abused and destroyed and pay big money for it? Or, go finance a new Miata and have very little worries? Vince

What advantage does a gear box with the reverse gear next to 1st gear offer over the one that has its reverse gear on the back of 5th gear?

From the perspective of the transmission design, the three-column design (reverse by 5th) only needs three linkage selector shafts in the transmission, while the other design needs four shafts. This adds some part count and complexity, although probably not a huge amount. There would be some impact as well to the way the gears and shafts have to be laid out within the transmission, but this is hard to speak about on a general basis. I had a six-speed manual transmission (Mazda MX-5 Miata) that had reverse next to 6th gear, in the lower right of the shift pattern. There was a small detent to prevent going into reverse accidentally, but not a proper lockout. Probably about once a year I accidentally hit reverse when pulling back from 5th to 6th, always when I was going 60+ MPH. The reverse gear would make a horrible screeching sound, but of course there was virtually no chance it would actually engage. If it did, the transmission would have been thoroughly ruined. I would prefer the reverse gear placement on the left side of the shift pattern, based on that experience.

What's the best 1960s sports car?

Lotus Elan drophead - quintessential 60’s sports car. Two seats, convertible, British. This is the car that inspired the Mazda MX-5 Miata. The car was advanced for the time, with 4 wheel disc brakes, independent suspension, nice DOHC 1.5 liter engine. Shelby AC Cobra - start with a nice British sports car, inspired by / based off the Ferrari Barchetta and drop in a Ford V-8. First a 260, then a 289, and finally the 427 engine. It is a great combination of looks and power. Porsche 911 - we forget just how 60’s this car was. Lightweight, 2.0 liter flat 6, short wheel base, long hood.

Is the Mazda MX-5 Miata as good as everyone says it is?

Miata is actually an acronym: Miata Is Always The Answer. But it might not be an answer to a question that you happened to ask. How old are you? What do you think is “an ideal sports car”? Why? If you’re of a certain age - either temporally, or spiritually, you think the sports cars sort of peaked in the 1950s/60s/70s, and it’s been all downhill from there. You believe that handling in tight and twisty corners is the hallmark on which a sports car is judged, and that the “fun factor” from this dominates 0–60 times, lap times, and frankly any other measure of the car. You believe that an open top, seating for two, modest size and light weight all together compose the opening ante in the “is this even possibly a sports car” game, and that from there a great exhaust note, affordable purchase price, and modest operating costs, offset by the fact that the owner can do a great deal of the work themselves, round it out. If this is all true, you’ll probably point to a selection of cars from Europe from about 1953 to about 1973 as the pinnacle, discounting anything that weighed over 2500 pounds as “that’s a GT car!”, and bemoan the transitions that 5 MPH bumpers and emission regulations brought to the industry. You might hold onto a few of those relics which made their way forward time, encumbered by regulation, up until sometime in the 80s, where it all became hopeless. If you’re one of those people - whether you’re in your 50s or in your teens - then yes, absolutely, the Miata is your cup of tea. It started from a design exercise taking a Lotus Type 26 Elan, which was de-constructed, and re-factored into a modern unibody construction and technologically updated components, and delivered as the NA series Miata. It’s very nearly perfectly a modern re-realization of an Elan. It’s perfectly balanced, it’s light (for the time), nimble, has just enough power to be fun, but not enough to be dangerous. It’s optimized for driving as hard as you can, but not breaking 80MPH… I could go on, but you get the idea. It’s the modern instantiation of the Platonic ideal of “sports car”. Now, if you happened to come of age with a different set of sensibilities - say thinking that a pony car like the Mustang or Camaro is actually a sports car… You’re not going to be happy. The straight line acceleration blows dead goats. You can’t really burn out. If you try to add a 500W stereo system to it there’s no place put the speakers and the electrical system won’t carry the load anyway… But if you’re one of the “classic sports car people”… you can’t go wrong with it. The NA, just about perfect. The NB, some of the rougher edges removed, more power. The NC, ND…. yeah, let’s not talk about them. Too much electronics. Too many bells and whistles. Still closer to “real sports car” than most things on the market, but also quite removed from the ideal.

What was the worst car you've ever driven?

A late 1993 (1994 model year) Avus Blue E36 European BMW M3. The photo isn’t mine, sorry I bought it used in 1997, with about 60 000 km on the clock. Didn’t think much of it — what can go wrong with a German car in 60 thousand? Man, was I in for a surprise. It was beautiful, comfortable and a joy to drive. But in the next 25000 km, pretty much everything that could go wrong did. Bumpers cracked. Clutch stuck. Hell, throttle stuck! Every time the car was in traffic jam, throttle would stick open and need some pumping to get unstuck. Headlights fogged. The fog lights were held by clips so puny I wondered why they bothered at all. I had to put them back in place after every drive in heavy rain or snow. There was a nasty electrical leak BMW couldn’t diagnose, so the car couldn’t be left parked without a charger for more than 4 days. And the interior… Random pieces of trim detached themselves and went flying around. The seat backs stuck closed. The car routinely left me without a/c in summer and with only 1 fan speed (highest and loudest!) in winter. The cool-looking red dot matrix indicators consisted mainly of dead pixels. The final straw came from the beautiful computer-controlled dashboard. One dark night, very far away from home, it waved its lovely transparent indicator hands one last time and died. Have you ever driven a car with no speedo at night? The official BMW service station always acted all surprised, but happily billed me for parts and labour. After the first year I’ve realized that I have already spent more on M3 than I have spent in 4 years on my previous Nissan 240SX. So I went to an independent BMW specialist instead. The specialist gave the car just one look and said “Oh, 1st gen E36 Euro M3. They’re nasty lemons, all of them. Did the dashboard on yours already die? If not, sell it quickly, replacement dash is $2000.” My next car was a Mazda MX-5. For the first year I had that constant background feeling of impending doom, because nothing was wrong with the car yet! And nothing ever went wrong in my 5 years with it.

Why is an independent suspension in cars not prevalent?

While almost all cars have independent front suspension, it is common for the rear suspension to be on a solid beam especially on front wheel drive cars. This is a VW Golf’s… One advantage of a beam axle is that the wheels stay in alignment to each other and stay square to the road during normal use. Generally unsprung weight is lower so the wheel requires less spring to deal with deflection recovery which leads to better road holding… Another advantage The other big advantage is cost The disadvantage is that the movement of one wheel effects the contact patch of the other. If a car is leaning, the wheel on the side away from the lean is lifted too as the inner wheel moves up into the wheel arch Independent rear suspension needs to use clever geometry to ensure the wheel stays square to the road when each wheel is moved up. If it doesn’t, then the wheel can tuck under if allowed to drop too far…Simple IRS systems did this, in the UK, famously, the ‘60’s/’70’s Triumph Spitfire. Decent independent rear suspension is expensive to produce and requires careful and accurate setting up when in use. Car’s with independent rear suspension need to have a four wheel alignment while the majority of alignment systems only do the front wheels. We have front wheel only gauges and only about 1% of vehicles coming in cannot be fully set up. Mostly bigger BMW’s, Mercs, and all Mazda MX-5’s. Independent front suspension has been the norm for 70 years, independent rear suspension has been a rare and much lauded performance feature of rear wheel drive cars for decades but cost, and complexity make it rare on anything but the most expensive or handling-dedicated vehicles.

Which is best coupe for short guy? Like 5"3 ? I like Mazda MX-5, Toyota GT86, BMW 2 & Audi TT. You can add other option too.

I’m going to have to recommend the Miata too. Though I’ve never driven any of these cars new, I’ve been in the GT86, and let me tell you: that’s a 2 seater as well, even you are short. And, while the Miata is often downplayed for it’s power output, it actually has a better 0–60 time than the GT86, due to gearing and torque. If you really have the money, I would go for the BMW M240i. You get great performance with actual rear seats and a nice interior, and it has much better value than the $8000 more expensive M2.

How long should you run a modern car engine before you start to move or switch to drive?

Every morning, when I start my car, it idles at 1500 rpm for the first few seconds. Waiting for it to settle into an idle at ~700 rpm seems like eternity, but it’s really no more than 60 seconds. I do not move the car as long as the engine is idling at anything over 800 rpm. As soon as it dips below it, I put it in gear and drive off. I do this in my 2015 Subaru BRZ, also in my wife’s Subaru Legacy and used to do it in my old 2006 Mazda MX-5 Miata. I also do it in any rental car or even if I happen to drive a friend’s car. My reason is this. Modern engines are programmed intelligently. The computer controlled electronic fuel injection system sends “rich” mixture into the combustion chamber (similar to pulling the choke in the olden days) until some conditions are met - that’s why idling rpm is high. After those conditions are met, it starts to send “lean” mixture. I do not intend to move the car when the car’s brain thinks it’s not ready yet. When idling rpm falls to ~700, I know it’s ready to move. Whether that takes 5 seconds or 55 - I don’t care, as long as I’m not in a hurry.

What are “Miata car covers”?

Mazda MX-5 Miata Car Cover,. Up to 60% Off. Free Shipping and Lifetime Warranty. Best Reviews on ,Mazda MX-5 Miata Car Covers,. Call us at 1-800-916-6041. you should think about whether you need vehicle cover or not. However, a ,car cover, is essential for almost all vehicles that are exposed to harmful environmental elements such as weather and chemical aspects. We all are known that acid rain contains chemicals, but it damages the external finish of a car. On the other side, the cost of repairing damages is high and as well as depends on various factors too. Therefore, it is very important to buy a ,car cover, to protect it against damage causing substances.

Is the horsepower of a car relative to its weight?

There is no steadfast rule, but typically a heavier car will require a higher-powered engine to motivate it sufficiently. You can get by with 132 HP in a Corolla, but that amount in a Land Cruiser would be downright dangerous. The new Mazda MX-5 (Miata) gets by with “only” 155 HP, but it weighs just over 2300 pounds. Road and Track got a 0–60 time of 6.1 seconds. For comparison’s sake, a 2015 Ford Ecoboost (4-cylinder turb0) Mustang has double the HP (310), but weighs 3500 pounds, 1200 more than the Miata. With double the HP, Motor Trend got a 0–60 time for the Mustang of 5.6s, or 0.5 seconds faster than the Miata. Doesn’t seem like much of a difference, does it? Even larger vehicles are going to smaller engines. The new CX-9 has a turbo-4 and no larger engine option but has received positive reviews from testers. Smaller turbo engines can produce power and torque across a wide range of RPMs.
