Last year I visited Baku for the first time. I hired a normal taxi for the hotel. My hotel was around 10 -15 km away from the airport and he charged me around $60. I feel very attached to it because of it's comfort and high seating position- a characteristic feature not really seen in many Suv s nowadays. Bought it in 2017 and loving it ever since. Car 2: The Mercedes Benz Maybach S500L V8 W222 There's no doubt about the truth of the statement- “There is something about Mercedes that excites the potential buyers,that brings a sparkle in one's eyes, that justifies paying a huge premium over other brands on a Merc. This one's our second Merc,my hubby uses it as his daily driver. Bought it back in 2018 to replace the aging XJ. There has been not a lot of reliability issues, as many people claim. However, have really gone knuts about it's maintenance costs. Me and my hubby sometimes interchange our cars if we feel like. At the end of the day, it's not just a stretched S, but much more! Just notice the sheer length of the car, don't try to drive it yourself, especially on Indian road conditions, honestly…. you'll be pissed off. Hail the Lord, Carmichael road,the locality I reside in, is well connected to the rest of the city and is well served by Ola and Uber. Not blurring the plates fully, since wanted to show that got it registered in Kolkata,West Bengal,due to a much more reasonable tax bracket on luxury cars than here in Bombay. Still, end up paying heavy fines if cops seek a little bit of attention. Well, restricting the kids to eat in the car can really help to keep the interiors clean. Car 4: Toyota Fortuner 2WD Manual Its mainly used for long trips and highway runs. A competent tourer and a 'no nonsense' set of wheels, she has taken us wherever we needed, whenever we needed and bought us back as well , since 2017. Never. When AI reaches the point where it would be possible for it to replace humans in programming, it will also replace programs. The AI is already a program; it would just set itself to doing whatever the program is supposed to do. The hard part of programming is the “figuring out what the program is supposed to do” part. The rest is just a matter of technical details. Which are sometimes incredibly tedious and involved, but still far easier than the AI-complete task of figuring out what needs to be done. You won’t say, “OK Uber-Siri, write me an accounting program.” You’d say, “OK Uber-Siri, here’s my receipts. Go write a check to the IRS for whatever I owe it.” It’s a bit like asking Toyota to build a car to help you run faster. You don’t use a car to run faster. You just stop running and replace the activity with something entirely different that serves the real function of going places. Now, whether Uber-Siri actually ,wants, to be an accounting program, rather than wiping out the human race and doing something more fun with all the time it saves… that’s a different question. Fortunately (or not), it’s a question we won’t have to ask any time soon. We’re nowhere near an AI-complete AI. Current Siri isn’t even a nod in the direction of one; it’s just a very clever simulacrum that’s less similar to an AI than a Star Wars movie is to a real rocket.
Why don't Indians realise that Fiat makes better cars than Maruti?
Very well said ! - :) Indians are so ignorant that without proper service and part replacement at regular intervals and (must,must) quality of fitment of replaced parts - You SIMPLY! cannot put a car on road for 5 year/1,00,000 Km (1 Lakh km). Another Example: Even in the most developed countries like USA where there are more than 2 cars per home - People look for (a.s.s) servicing effectiveness and longevity of the cars. -Thats why toyota and honda sell more than any other USA-domestic brands like Ford and Chevy. There are some people who take pride in saying Maruti is beggars/common mans car (attitude). I have one word to tell them - If you cannot put your 5-10Lakh car on the road - due to whatever reason it may be - then you are sold a Heavy METAL Junk - that will either sit in the garage for parts !!Yet to Come!! or sit in your parking lot - because it is so expensive to fix. That’s not a CAR it is called HEAVY METAL. Remember : When you choose a car - Choose a car for its - 1.Longevity 2.Reliability 3.Ease of Maintenance 4.Easy Spares availability 5.Easy workmanship for the mechanics : always make sure the replacement of parts/fitment is in good shape - that’s why maruti rates service quality only from 8/9/or/10 - 7 is pathetic in terms of MARUTI 6.Good Mileage 7.Uncompromising ride and handling till the end of life of the car. 8.Functional Interiors - Not FANCY as in HYUNDAI !! 9.Ground Clearance and Recovery - Ground Clearance - Required for Indian Roads - Our country Roads or so called roads have pot holes the size of ponds and lakes - highways have patches / unmarked speed breakers / pedestrian crossing / cattle crossing / drunk lorries / sleepy buses / slow tractors / tricycles and auto’s (poor visibility due to the structure - Fish Shaped) What is Recovery?: After you hit a speed breaker or a sudden brake (Very much possible with above road conditions) - you still can ride a maruti without any troubles - atleast on the next service service advisor at maruti will only say - sir! suspension needs overhaul - steering arm is bent !!! which can easily be replaced and at less cost. - You can recover at a lower cost - than a top class Ford/Fiat/hyundai - that will ask you hell lot of money for such incident - Seen it a hundred times, which makes recovery costlier. 10. Resale!!! - When you want to try something new. 11. Complaints: People who complain about rattling noise in maruti cars - buy a car floor mat and cover the front and back door panels inside the door panel/paste it/insulate it -not outside. 12. Safety: Safety of the Car does not come with weight of doors / heavy metal feel /packed feel - “Thud” sound in doors !! - foolishness. It is the structure of the Car - how well it is structured [Frame of car ]? and What material is used ? Educated should know that there are metals which are lighter than IRON and still STRONGER than iron in its characters. Also the shape of the object plays a vital role during accidents - it has to be aero dynamic as well stronger in shape - doesn’t mean it has to look massive. this is why VOLVO dont look as cool as audi or bmw!! “people who complain on the Baleno accident should also look at the toyota fortuner accident - despite looking massive it was a metal plate after the accident.” Lets End… I owned a Maruti and after 5 years - i wanted to try a different brand but everywhere i went they all pushed me to Maruti again and friends told me / said if these are the parameters better stick to Maruti - No one at the moment delivers this promise. When some other brand delivers this promise - i will try that brand - for sure!! - until then am not ready to buy a METAL JUNK even if it is just 1 Lakh - No Point!! Another Example: Say - Your Kid is unwell and it is raining - you want to take him to a doctor - you have a car that is sitting in the service centre for parts to arrive or sitting at home for you to accumulate the money needed for servicing. — What is the point of owning a Car ? - If you have to rely on Uber/Ola again and follow the pathetic calls to follow up with the driver / give him address / do GPS for the driver / finally pay a hefty amount !!! :O Pathetic!! Happy Motoring - If you are Practical thinker !! - Car is Not For Fancy or STATUS !! Car has a purpose at first place!! Kudos !! to Maruti Suzuki for being such a brand in India..!! When we STOP buying car brands that does not have a good after sales that is when these so called manufacturers will enter India with a wide network for service and not just sell their cars. If we take pride in owning a car that does not have good service - then we are encouraging the automobile manufacturers to throw us anything and we will only want pride and not the car or its purpose in our life.!! How can Tesla compete with GM and Ford when they start churning out similar cars?
*IF* ,GM and Ford were technologically and organizationally able to make similar cars - and at similar price/performance levels, then of course, Tesla would have a much harder time of things than they currently do. HOWEVER, there are no signs whatever of any of the big car companies being able to do that. To the contrary - instead of (for example) Ford being able to build an electric pickup truck to compete with the up-coming Tesla CyberTruck - they spent a small fortune financing another company (Rivian) to do that instead. In April 2019, Ford ploughed HALF A BILLION dollars into Rivian. Why would they do that to help Amazon, Cox Automotive and others to start a rival electric truck company if they felt themselves able to compete? The “Big 5” auto manufacturers have a lot of problems when it comes to switching production over to electric cars. CORPORATE CULTURE: Some of them (BMW, for example) are hell bent on building a standard car chassis (a “skateboard”) that can be kitted out as an electric, hybrid or gasoline vehicle. This is a disastrous way to build an electric car because you bring along all of the compromises of internal combustion engine vehicle designs into your electric vehicles. The only way to compete with Tesla is to design a vehicle as a no-compromises electric vehicle from the ground up. You only have to look at BMW’s electric MINI Cooper to see what a disaster that can be. (Would you buy a sporty hot-hatchback with a top speed of 92mph?) The problem is fairly ingrained into the way they work and the deals they’ve made with various unions over the past decade. The big car makers have “An Engine Factory” and “A Transmission Factory” and “A Panel Stamping Factory”…all of which have representatives in high level management. So when someone says “Hey let’s build an electric car!” - which has no engine and no transmission - you can just imagine how enthusiastic these other divisions are about that. Then, when you tell the Airconditioning division that you need their A/C unit to be powered electrically and not by the serpentine belt - AND that they need to work hand-in-glove with the new “Battery Division” (which doesn’t yet exist) to allow the A/C unit to also cool the batteries…you can imagine the fight you have on your hands. BATTERIES: Worse still - about half of the weight (and a LARGE fraction of the cost) of an electric car is the battery pack. A typical Tesla has around 4,000 individual batteries in its battery pack. Buying those batteries on the open market is a MAJOR problem because you’re competing for them against companies like Compaq who use them in laptops - and Chinese makers of those “Hoverboard” toys…there are only just so many batteries to go around. Tesla have contracted two big battery makers (Panasonic and LG-Chem) to make batteries for their cars WITHIN Tesla factories - and it’s looking like Tesla will soon boot out Panasonic and start making their own batteries. Could one of the Big 5 car makers do that? Well, with a major corporate re-org, they might…but then when they come to start up their battery production - they’ll need all of the very specialized equipment to do all of the chemical processing and so forth. None of them have that expertise - heck, they don’t even make their own 12 volt lead acid batteries. So - they need to go out and buy the equipment to do that. OK - so who makes the machinery to make batteries? Turns out it’s a rather obscure company called “Hibar”…who were recently purchased by…do you want to guess who? It begins with a ‘T’…and it’s not “Toyota”! They’d also need huge supplies of Lithium and Cobalt…and the places where that stuff is mined in an environmentally sound way are all tied up with contracts from…um…now which company was that? Ends with an ‘a’ - and it’s still not “Toyota”! The remaining lithium mines are HORRIBLE places with really nasty environmental track records…exactly what you DON’T want when you’re trying to appeal to the tree huggers who buy electric cars. So even building a battery factory would be a nightmare. SELF DRIVING: The other problem the Big 5 car makers have is with the whole self-driving thing. You can see them rushing out features like “advanced cruise control” (which is basically just regular cruise control with a thing that slows the car down if a camera or radar signal beamed from the front of the car detects another car too close in front. Also “lane centering steering” - which either uses a camera to look for the white lines and a SIMPLE AI program to figure out how to stay between them. Cadillac even has one that uses a high rez map to do that and can only use the feature on freeways. It’s fairly clear that they are all WAY behind on self-driving. Most estimates are that they are 5 years behind EVEN IF they go to Waymo or Uber or Apple and buy their expertise. CHARGING NETWORKS: Tesla has spent a ton of money on their supercharger network. Their technology is ahead of the curve - the chargers themselves are capable of pushing more energy into the cars than the cars are able to accept. The latest generation can charge at “1000 miles per hour” - but current generation cars are only able to accept that charge at maybe 500 miles per hour…especially with the lower-end models. Tesla have offered the opportunity for other car makers to use Tesla chargers - but in order to do that they have requirements on the car designs to allow them to interact with the charger safely. So far, not one other car company has signed up for that. Other car makers have various public chargers that can be used. Tesla cars can ALSO use those chargers. So right now - Tesla owners have a MUCH larger set of charging options - all of the public chargers PLUS all of the Tesla chargers…of which there are a hell of a lot. But the problem with public chargers is that they cannot interact with the car to do things in a smart way - so this is a problem for the other companies. Porsche have done things like installing their “own brand” chargers at Porsche dealerships - but that’s a joke…there aren’t enough Porsche dealerships on the planet to come close to solving the problem. BRAND AWARENESS: This is a tough call. If Tesla continue to be perceived as the best there is in the EV world then their brand awareness is over-the-top good. If the Big 5 car makers continue to make “meh” vehicles that aren’t exciting - then beating Tesla on brand awareness is impossible. Tesla took a car and had SpaceX launch it on a rocket to Mars…there is nothing the Big 5 could to to match that kind of awareness.
