A typical automobile cooling and heating system can ,hold, up to 3 ,gallons,. Different systems require different solutions to be added to the water. ,Antifreeze,, as well as rust and mineral inhibitors, are common Additives.

Is it advisable to buy a used Fortuner which has run more than 1 lakh kilometers, how much maintenance and life can I expect from it?

Toyota engines are way more reliable than others. The Fortuner is comes with two well tested and trusted engine options that are great in terms of refinement and reliability. The engines of Fortuner are meant to easily last for ,2–3 lakh kilometers, and if it will maintained very well then this number would go to 5 lakhs or more. You’re asking for a Fortuner that has done more than 1 lakh kilometers, then these points should be considerable: Note:-, Make sure to get a mechanic with you, If you’re not well known to cars. First thing is the exterior:-, Check all the inner and outer body along with chassis and make sure that the car isn’t accidental, rusted or repainted. Second step is the interior:- ,Check the complete interior, electricals, leather upholstery and other stuff. Then take a test drive:- ,Test drive is the the most important thing and should be taken by an experienced person. These are some points to check during the test drive:- Check Self start duration. If it takes too long then there is a problem. Then check clutch travel. Check AC and Heater of all three rows Check gearbox After that, check the acceleration and smoke coming from the exhaust tip Check braking If is it 4x4 then do check the 4WD lever Check any kind of rattle noise by driving on potholes and also check the suspension Its time for papers:- ,Check all the papers and also not forget to check the owner Sr. No. on RC. Below are the documents that needs to check. RC (Registration Certificate) Pollution Certificate Insurance Check Service book (make sure that all the services are done at authorised service center only) These are some things to check and considered in mind while buying a Fortuner or any other car or SUV. Expenses:-, If you do all the mentioned things correctly then you won’t have to pay for any further expenses except a complete service in authorised service center that costs you approx Rs 15,000–20,000. Expected Life:-, If you drive 2,000–3,000 kilometers in a month then it will easily lasts for 5–7 years or may be more if the validity is remaining. I hope you got your answer, If you like then, Do Follow Space ,ARDwheels, for more relatable queries.

What’s more fun to want than to actually own?

Most Cars. In 40 years I have owned 30+ cars. At each point of ownership - I wanted something else. It is having an “Optimizing” mindset rather than a “sufficing” mindset. Harley Davidson Fatboy - only for show and shine.. not for driving. Modern recreation - Pennyfathing Bicycle. In another 20/30 years - I will be to old to drive safely. So why bother to own them in the first place?

As a mechanic what car do you drive and what cars would you never own?

I am a mechanic of sorts on diesel engines and all types of small engines. I perform simple to moderate repairs on the family fleet but I personally am drawn to Japanese cars for their practicality, long life even if abused and efficiency but secretly lust after BMW’s because of personal preference. I would never own a Land Rover, Jaguar or Jeep/Chrysler all for the same reason. Poor reliability, poor build quality and the disposable nature of the car. It seems to grenade at 130,000 miles and takes an act of congress and a small fortune to keep on the road. Started as a classic Chevy guy (60’s up to the mid 80’s) and then got heavy into Honda’s and later fell in love with Toyota also. I bought a Honda CR-V for the wife. It will likely get to 300k or 400k before it dies or maybe more, high mileage club guys get more with trucks that live a harder life. We got it with 79k on the clock and use Mobil 1 Synthetic on all of our cars and it’s ticking along at 143k now, sounds and performs like a new car. I drive a Toyota 4Runner that I purchased last year with 150k miles, currently has 183k miles and all it has needed in 33k miles as a high mileage vehicle was a set of brakes and an alternator. Many people report over 400k and 600k on these vehicles on the original engine and trans. Maybe a radiator here and some CV joints along the way but you can’t beat that as far as return on investment. Going to do some undercoating on the bottom of the truck so that the small amount of rust starting doesn’t kill it. I am in the southern US so not much snow or salt to speak of but it’s just a measure of protection. My lust for BMW’s specifically and German cars in general is where my heart makes no sense. BMW’s are expensive to repair, they are complicated and suffer frequent cooling system and sensor failures BUT they drive like Camaros with proper balance and “sexy road handling characteristics”. I am also just as smitten by the lines on a 1988 BMW 750i as a 2015 BMW 325i. I have a dream to restore one of the older cars to its former glory but the wallet doesn’t agree. I am kinda cheap so that won’t work for me but we all can hope. Thats my .02 worth

Are BMWs as reliable as Toyotas?

No, BMWs have been named as one of the world’s most unreliable cars in the world along with Volkswagens, Audis and the other German brands. Toyotas and their luxury brand Lexus are named the world’s most reliable cars. From brand new BMW has 1 in 35 engines that need to be fixed within the warranty period. Toyota/Lexus has 1 in 150. BMWs tend to only last around 5 years before they start giving trouble. Toyotas/Lexus cars last way way way longer than that. In 2015 we sold our 1991 Toyota Corolla to a friend it still drove extremely well with no rattles and in the 10 years we owned it we never had a problem, we never replaced a part on that car other than general maintenance. It also has no rust. Try getting that kind of reliability out of a German car, it is extremely unlikely to happen. Reliability on BMWs is miserable compared to Toyota/Lexus reliability. I have seen more than enough German cars giving their owners problems as it really seems to be one problem after the next with German cars. Also if you live in the USA you do not want to be repairing any ageing German car as not only do they break down often they cost a fortune to fix. When it comes to the reliability of BMWS, Volkswagens, Audis and the other German brands they don’t even come close to matching the reliability of Toyotas/Lexus cars. Toyota/Lexus was the company that invented lean manufacturing and the modern way of making cars which has resulted in their cars being as reliable as they are. As for the other Japanese brands well a lot of them are very reliable as well but a lot of their reliability has come from the fact they copied Toyota’s manufacturing system. All other brands of car makers have not managed to achieve how reliable Toyotas are still the most reliable cars. Other car makers are still confused with how Toyota achieves this.

What is tribal development?

What? is a wrong question. I think How would be the right one. Development has the same meaning, weather it is tribal or any other. Improvement in Economic and Social parameters is growth. But yes, you are right in a way that, tribal development has to be handled differently. I am sure some ppl are going to be annoyed at what I say, but it is true. Tribal or development of economically and educationally backward communities has to be tackled separately and differently. For them, money in hand is a very corrupting influence and they try to imitate others without understanding the implications. I will give an example. I was working for a steel company in Chattisgarh a few years back. A lot of land procurement was going on for expansion of the steel plants and new power plants. The rates being offered were very good. I advised two plants that they not give the amount in one go in their bank accounts and instead, in coordination with the District Commissioner, fix this amount in long term deposits in banks with a fixed annuity. One of the plants accepted my recommendations partially, while the other refused. An average amount of Rs 60 lakhs to 1 cr was paid to most of them (this is an average, the actual amounts varied from Rs 32 lakhs to 4 cr). The plant which accepted my recommendations, agreed to credit 50% of the amount immediately and fix the rest in FD in Nationalised banks for 7 years. I visited the area again after 3 years for another assignment and was shocked at what I saw. The villages who has been paid complete amount in one go, were dens of liquor and drugs. The money had mostly vanished (courtesy touts who came to them with various schemes of which they had no Idea). 5–6 families used the amount to buy land elsewhere and were comparatively better off. Some had either gone in for Backhoe loaders or Pay loaders or Tippers without having any knowledge of how to operate them. The equipment after 3 years was either lying in a junkyard or inside the plant as a scrap. Most had hardly anything left with frequent fights within families on who had poofed off the money, broken marriages due to educated brides taken for their uneducated kids, Large houses which had become unmaintainable. I even saw some Toyota Fortuners and Dusters standing which were rusting due to no money for Diesel. One of them had made a temple near his house for 7 lakhs. In the other village, there was comparative development. While they had also mostly finished off the 50% of the compensation which was given to them initially, the CSR manager of the plant had reworked a deal with the banks to give them 50% of the interest monthly to the landowners. So now they had some money coming to them regularly and their kids were studying in decent schools (some in Raipur as well). These kids after 4 years would have a voice in the family and would be educated enough to know how to use this money. The problem with tribals is they do not understand the value of money. Most of their life they have lived in the nature and are content with food and a house. The sudden influx of money makes them become disoriented. Hence tribal development has to be handled by concentrating on education, slow and steady social development and gradual financial growth. They have to be shielded from sudden shocks. Education of women pays very high dividend. This is not formal education, but education on social issues, child upbringing, hygiene and home finances through informal means accompanied with incentives.

If you had the chance to remove one car model from ever existing, which one would it be and why?

There is one, which jumps right to the front (or back) of the line for me. That was the infamous Yugo… The Yugo or Yugo GV, was a Yugoslavian hatchback clone built by Zastava, based on an obsolete Fiat 128 model. It was sold in the U.S. as an extremely affordable economy model in the 1980’s to the early 1990’s with an aggressive ad campaign. The problem with the Yugo was pretty much everything… The entire car, top to bottom, front to back and side to side was horrendous. It would rust within weeks of taking ownership, plastic and trim pieces would break off during the test drives, the electrics were incredibly unreliable, the engine was underpowered and the entire vehicle was unsafe and unreliable. In fact, if you did choose to finance your new Yugo, chances are it would be rusted, broken down and ready for the junkyard before the 4-year loan term was up. Even from a safety standpoint, the tiny compact was incredibly dangerous, with poor crashworthiness, inferior handling with too much sway and understeer, and woefully inadequate brakes. For some drivers, a Yugo was a death sentence… Consumer Reports at the time strongly recommend that car buyers purchase a used Toyota Corolla instead of a new Yugo. Fortunately, this little abomination isn’t made anymore, and hasn’t been sold in the States since 1992. The last European Yugo was built in 2008. This is a car, which should never have been built to begin with and any remaining examples should be crushed. It really was that bad…

Why are Toyota engines so reliable? Why do Toyota engines last longer?

Let's look at how toyota releases new versions of vehicles and how often they do it. Toyotas spend a lot of money on research and development. Sometimes they can spend years before releasing a new version of a vehicle. Look at the 4runner. The 3rd generation lasted 6 years and look at the 5th generation 4runner, it's been around for a decade and all they did to it is add a few features and change the aesthetics appeal. Look at the 3.4L V6 engine used in the 3rd gen 4runner, toyota used that engine in a lot of their vehicle lineups. Look at the 4.0L V6 it was used in the hilux, mark x, Camry, 4runner, fortuner, prado, land cruiser 79 series and 76 series, Tacoma just to name a few and they even used it in a racing vehicle of their own. When toyota makes a mistake they review it and see how to improve it. Other manufacturers throw it out and build an entirely new engine. The Japanese also have a culture of continuous improvements in their processes and in looking for mistakes. You are even awarded for finding out a mistake and stopping the production line if you work at Toyota. When they slip they try and focus on satisfying the customer, look at the recall for the rusted frames on the toyota pickup in America back in the 90s. They changed the frames for free for a certain period of time. Toyota over builds their vehicles so that they can last longer and make sure parts are available everywhere. Plus toyota engineering is simple and Many other manufacturers are taking note of that too and applying that to their production lines as well.

Is it possible for an 85 Toyota pickup engine to be upgraded or replaced entirely? If so, how would you increase its performance to a level worth the cost?

Possible, yes. Practical, no. Your pickup is 36 years old, there is no collector interest, and no parts support. If you upgrade the engine, the tranny will go next month, then the brakes the month after that. You'll end up pouring a fortune into it and still not have a reliable vehicle. Rust proofing of Japanese vehicles on this era was minimal. If you want to build a performance vehicle, pick something desirable that has good parts support. Honestly, if you just want something more powerful than an 85 toyota pickup, buy any pickup 10 years old or newer and you'll get one more powerful, more reliable, with good parts support and reliability. I have been the patron saint of several lost causes, so I hope you can learn from my mistakes.

How many cars will a person have in their lifetime?

The plural of “anecdote” is not data, but here’s my anecdote… I’m a “daily driver” type - and not a collector or hobbyist - and tend to drive cars from near-new until they somehow end up “leaving”, typically well after 150,000 miles of use. I’ve owned the following: Toyota Corona, - already ancient when I got it for $800, and was basically held together by rust. It was my first car. I drove it for about two years until its timing chain snapped and shotgunned the engine block, sending it to the junkyard. Mitsubishi Tredia, - bought new, drove for about 130K miles, including about 40K miles after it got backed into by a hit & run truck. During that last period, its front-end was held together by bunjie cords and duct-tape (I was trying a startup at the time). Saturn SC2, - lots of good memories of this car, as I drove all over the place in it. It could haul surprisingly large amounts of stuff; once I moved 3 19″ boxed tube monitors in it, along with a trunk-full of computer parts when I owned a computer store. I drove it for about 15 years and 180K miles before it was stolen (who steals an ancient Saturn?), and was found abandoned in Berkeley - with about two-dozen parking tickets - a week after I replaced it with the Element. Toyota Camry, - a very staid, boring car that just ran forever. It was primarily my wife’s daily driver and her first car after coming to the US. We drove it for about 210K miles until it got in a sandwich-wreck on the highway (fortunately, no injuries). Honda Element, - a great road-trip and Swiss army-knife vehicle. We drove it on some awesome road-trips - including my most Herculean driving feat: Mountain View, CA to Banff, Alberta, Canada in two days (by myself). Acura TL, - our first “luxury” car, and we still own it. Lexus RX 350, - Our mini-SUV - we still own it. So, that’s 7 cars, including two that we still own and will likely drive for several more years (although the Acura is getting a bit long in the tooth). I started driving in 1984.
