What's it like to be raised in a country that is different than your ethnic homeland and then move there?
I'm an Israeli born in Israel to Israeli parents. My family moved to the US when I was 4 years old and I grew up here. When I was in my 20s, my parents retired and moved back to Israel. I spent two period of around 2 years each living in Israel. The first time, I was maybe 21 and went there due to some legal issues here in the states. I was addicted to heroin and I was able to quickly find a job and a supplier there. After close to 2 years, my family found out and threw me into rehab. This was not my first rehab but my first rehab in Israel and let me tell you something... there is a huge difference between the rehab I attended here in South Florida and the one in some city in Israel the name of which I cannot even recall. And I think it pretty much sums up everything about the country rather nicely. Let's start with this. Israel is a very tiny country. Very tiny. The state of Florida, in comparison, is quite large. As an example, if I am preparing to take a drive and someone asked me if I was driving far... I would not consider a 30 minute drive to be a long distance. In Israel, if a friend lives a 30 minute drive away, it is considered ridiculously far and plans have to be made in advance. Usually, one would plan to spend a weekend or at least the night there before agreeing to travel such lengths. You can travel across the entire country and back in, I believe, 16 hours (I could be wrong and I'm too lazy to fact check so correct me if you wish). Point being it is small. Since the country is so small, everything inside it must be small as well. Not only is everything smaller but everything is much more expensive. When my parents retired, they sold our enormous family home (3 bdrm, 2 bath, 2 living rooms, huge backyard with pool and screened in area, enormous front yard with orange trees, basically it was the dream home for a family of 4) and bought - for the same price - a teeny tiny little apartment in Givatayim. It also had 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms but each bedroom was about the size of my old walk-in closet. Compared to the apartment that I currently live in - which is a condo with 2 master bedrooms each with private bathrooms plus a guest half bath and an enormous amount of living space... I think I could fit that entire apartment in Israel into my current bedroom in Miami. So it was a shock. Another shock... my father always loved expensive things. He never drove anything but a Lexus here in the states. In Israel, you can't drive expensive cars because there is no place to park for a start and second, people will steal your shit if they think you have money. You have a lexus, you might as well put a sticker on it saying "break into this car" or "follow me home, I'm rich!" So my dad drove a Honda. My first car was a BMW - brand new - when I was 16. In Israel, I drove a used Toyota. Shock. The price of a car there is absolutely ridiculous as well. Not many people can even afford to have a car. And like I said, there is no parking. Small country, lots of people, you often would rather walk or take public transport. That said, there is one thing in Israel that is definitely better than in Florida and that is public transport. Of course, the United States is a huge country full of states with much different living conditions than the state I grew up in. So I am really comparing more the state than the entire country. But I've been to New York and I would say the parking situation is a bit like that. At least New York has the subway. Not that I enjoy taking public transport. But enough of that. Being bilingual helped me out a great deal in finding a good paying job in Israel. I was lucky enough to not experience first hand the difficulties of actually being an Israeli in Israel because I was always treated like an American everywhere I went. But the entirety of my family - aunts, uncles, cousins - lived their whole lives in Israel and it is a very different life for them than it is for me. And I realize that it is just luck for me to have been born to the right set of parents who decided to uproot their family and try their luck in the US. They say the American Dream is something that only foreigners believe in and I think that is true. My parents believed in it and it made them quite wealthy. And it made me quite fortunate to not have to live the lives that my cousins lived in Israel. Let's talk about socializing. I clearly did not belong in Israel. Spoiled American girl that I am, I don't fit in with the lowly Israeli working class. I don't know what it is like to work hard. This is their perception of me, at least. They don't know me but they assume that everything is handed to me in life. They watched me succeed even there and assumed it was something other than my own doing. But anyway, I could not get along with Israelis at all. They did not like me and I did not like them. I was lucky that I was able to work with mostly Americans and a few others like me who were Israeli but raised elsewhere. It felt like home. So I eventually found my own little "little America" in Israel. But even still, I often found myself having to leave the bubble and interact with other "real Israelis" and it made me extremely uncomfortable. Like I was an imposter trying to pass for one of them. Speaking their language. Using their money. But I did not know the slang. So I would often misspeak and get laughed at by the natives. Eventually, I learned most of it but I did not stay long enough to really make a serious attempt at fitting in. And the second time I returned, I did the same thing. I found another job in an American company working with Americans and speaking English and limited my interaction with Israelis as much as possible. I was never in Israel because I wanted to be there. It was always because of circumstance and I never felt like I belonged there. Going back to the rehab that I spent almost 2 weeks in. It was horrible. I've been homeless. And I've been to rehab in West Palm Beach which cost $800/day. So I have a lot of comparisons. This place in Israel was a nightmare. For starters, it was tiny (of course). It was just like an apartment building with one big common area and about 6-8 small bedrooms. Then there was a little nurses station and a tiny kitchen and dining hall. This was all in one little apartment-type of thing. It was beyond ridiculous. The "inmates" as I call them had to do chores. We had to cook our own food (what? no gourmet chef? no!), do dishes, wash floors, etc. Hello, we are drug addicts. Not only that but the men and women were together. There was only one other girl beside myself and we shared one of the rooms. But other than during sleeping time, everything else was a group effort. And the people in this place were nothing like the addicts of West Palm Beach. They were old, poor, dirty, creepy, and reeked of death. Even thinking about it now makes my skin crawl. Can you imagine being a pretty, little 20something girl in a place like that? I was. And like everything else in that miserable hole they call a country, it was a nightmare. Inmates smoked in the common area. There weren't any windows except tiny ones in the bedrooms and they were barred, of course. It felt like a prison. They let us go outside once a day but we had to wake up at 7am and go do exercise. I always used to put up a fuss about it and they would threaten to throw me out. But they never did. And when I eventually walked out, they tried to get me to stay. Even in there, I was the American princess expecting the world to continue to work the way it had always worked for me. Where in rehab, I got to sleep in late and when I wanted food, there was a kitchen with a fridge and three times a day there was warm food prepared by a gourmet chef and the closest thing to chores we had to do was to make our own beds but that was only after we got through the first week which was detox and nobody does anything for themselves during detox. It was like a vacation. But when I asked for some ketchup to put on the disgusting goo they called food in the Israeli rehab, they all laughed about how I was so spoiled, I expected there to be ketchup in there. What? Even scoring drugs in Israel is a completely different experience than here. Yeah, I've had to interact with plenty of shady characters here in the states but in Israel, it is a whole different level of shady. For the most part, it is Arabs selling to Israelis and we all know Arabs want to kill us all. It almost seems like they've got the drug trade under control so they can control the people there. As an Israeli, I have no idea why anyone would ever fight over that land. Honestly, I don't. It is a disgusting, miserable, shit hole. There is nothing about that place that I do not despise. And I have been to the wailing wall and the dead sea and YES OKAY, they are nice places to visit. And Yes Okay, there are some nice things to see. But you don't want to live there. You don't want to spend your life there. You don't want it, believe me. It is rubbish. Sorry, I don't know if I answered the question even. What is it like to be an Israeli raised in America? It's great, I think. It was great for me because I was automatically bilingual. Score. My parents were immigrants so they worked hard to give their kids (me and my brother) a chance to have a great life with little work (thanks mom and dad). Any of my cousins would tell you they envy us and all that we have here in America. And did I forget to mention that my parents - the ones who had dreamed of retiring to Israel for 20 years as they slaved away here in the states - they returned to the states. Yes, my parents found that life in Israel was not how they remembered it or rather that they had grown accustomed to an entirely different style of living and could not go back. They now live in beautiful Miami, FL. The other part of the question, what is it like to then live in the other country - well for me, it was horrible. Even the second time around, when I went with my husband and daughter (and was no longer using drugs), it was crap. My husband did not speak Hebrew and was not even Jewish so he could not find work. We were always fighting until eventually I sent him home which led to our eventual divorce. We are now still divorced but doing something that resembles dating again. I think the move to Israel played a part in my divorce but I'd be wrong to say it was the cause of it. Still, it definitely did not help my marriage or my life. Coming back to Florida (both times) was the best thing in the world. I guess I could say that my two experiences (2 completely different and very unique experiences) living in Israel were good for me because it showed me how great I have it here. It makes me very grateful to my parents for taking the huge risk they took in coming here. And if I was not so self-absorbed and lacking in empathy, I think I might feel pity for the sons and daughters of my parents siblings (9 on my dads side and 5 on my moms). All those poor kids whose parents stayed in Israel and failed to succeed there. Only one of my mom's brothers moved to Miami before my mom did and he is a billionaire today. He came in the 70s, we came in the 80s. Daniel Tosh, a semi-decent comedian for those who aren't familiar, once said something like this - true patriotism is realizing that this country sucks but that every other country sucks a billion times more (I'm sure you can look up the direct quote if you like - too lazy). But I believe this is so true. America is a shithole and there is so much wrong with this country that I don't know where to start. But it is by far more awesome than some of the other countries in this world and for that, I must say - I love this country (and also hate it). I would never wish to live in Israel. Even visiting there is a huge hassle for me. Forget that country. It is not worth the fight. Good luck finding the answer to your question in that mess of a rant. It's in there, I promise. What is most chilling is that this nation which was once the beacon of stability and hope around the world is so quickly collapsing into a terribly divided nation built now on division, distrust, immorality, fear and class status. There’s nowhere to turn for many Americans: for one half, it’s a party that seems to care for the oppressed but promotes measures to end the life of the unborn while the other half claims to have Christian values that support the unborn and Israel but ignores the plight of the less fortunate and puts up with the venom and lying of its leader without objection. Has anyone mentioned Civil War yet?! With ideologies so deeply embedded, radical extremes moving ever farther to the left and right, and words and rallies of hatred stirring up emotions, it’s a horrifying possibility.

ISRAEL 4:45. I wake to the sound of an air-raid siren. What?! Again? Bloody Gazans, they never learn… Oh, right, that's just my alarm clock. Can't be ,too, prepared, right? I smash it into multiple pieces anyways, in typical Krav Maga fashion. Ignoring the shards on the floor, I locate my running gear, which is hiding - as always - among the neatly stacked cans of hummus and gefilte fish, lined up in the shape of the Star of David on the east-facing wall of the bomb shelter. After making sure that there are no terrorists lurking in my home, I step outside, and breathe in the clear air of Jerusalem, an M-16 rifle slung lazily around my back. Consider the following: “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” (Romans1) It takes faith to believe that energy and matter just happened out of nothingness and likewise, it takes faith to believe that there is an invisible mysterious intelligent Creator who somehow began it all. The complexity, intricate design, mind-boggling detail and magnificence of beauty and ,creation ,is the evidence. “(God) will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you.
