    Range Rover Velar – Overview

Back then it was just the Range Rover and the little Evoque. As the Evoque is deemed too compact, Land Rover decided to offer something in between with the Velar. Luxury and style take centre stage in the Velar.  In Malaysia, the Range Rover Velar range starts from RM612,207.74 for the P250 four-cylinder, and the larger six-cylinder P380 from RM704,011.01. Globally, the Range Rover Velar have the BMW X4, Jaguar F-Pace and the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe as its key competitors. The Porsche Macan is also a usual model buyers compare the Range Rover Velar with.

    Design

The Range Rover Velar is the start of the new Range Rover design language, featuring slimmer lighting design, smoother character lines plus a much more upmarket interior. The flush door handles provide clean and pure lines. Like its Jaguar F-Pace cousin, the Range Rover Velar also uses high amounts of aluminium for its construction.

In Malaysia, the Range Rover Velar P250 is fitted with substantial equipment befitting its price tag. You get R-Dynamic styling pack with Burnished Copper highlights on a sportier front bumper, bonnet vents and side vents. The front grille and emblems are meanwhile finished in gloss black.

Standard features in the Range Rover Velar include Maxtrix LED headlights with signature DRL, fixed panoramic roof, 22-inch 9-spoke wheels with diamond-turned finishing, a hands-free powered tailgate and gloss black pillars and side mirrors.

The rear bumper features a significant upward sweep in black and combined with a silver surround for a sporty yet unconventional look in a premium SUV. A large rear spoiler adds aerodynamic efficiency plus style on the Range Rover Velar.

    Range Rover Velar – Interior

    Dashboard

The Range Rover Velar’s dashboard features the digital environment called Pivi Pro. The elegantly simple T-shaped dashboard further splits the control and display sections with another high-resolution display screen, making it a total of three high resolution displays in the cockpit.

Materials used on the Range Rover Velar are well crafted with plenty of satin-finished metallic switches and inserts. A large Drive Selector is used to replace the rotary designed item that came with the earlier models. The top touchscreen measures 10-inches and houses all the important information such as audio, navigation, and smartphone connection.

The lower display, also in 10 inches of screen size, allows a touch control for the air-conditioning, vehicle settings and the status of the Terrain Response drive mode program. Unfortunately, in the Range Rover Velar, the screen is placed too low thus operating will momentarily move the eyes off the road.

Similar to the recent update of the gear selector, the steering wheel design has also been updated to feature large capacitive control panels at both spokes. The R-Dynamic Pack also adds metallic foot pedals in the Range Rover Velar.

    Instrument cluster

The instrument cluster in the Range Rover Velar P250 includes a high-resolution 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that has a few layouts to suit the driver’s mood and taste. The screen can even be switched to a large navigation map.
A head-up display is also be included to complement the instrument cluster.

    Space and practicality

The Range Rover Velar SUV continues to exhibit functionality in the stylish interior. Two large cupholders are featured behind the fear selector. The armrest is, however, smaller than its competitors and but the storage space in the doors are deep and large though. The cargo space of the Range Rover Velar is 568 litres with all the seats up and you can lay them down via a 40-20-40 split to a cavernous 1,374 litres.

  • Features

    Range Rover Velar – Features

    Safety features

There are 6 airbags in the Range Rover Velar with Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) a cost option, with only Lane Keep Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition and Adaptive Speed Limiter standard items.

360-degree birdseye view parking camera is standard fitment though. Apart from parking, the 3D Surround camera also adds unique driving modes such the ClearSight Ground View and ClearSight Plan View.

Being a Land Rover Range Rover product, there is also a Wade Sensing feature to detect water and prepare the vehicle to traverse through it.

    Comfort features

The comfortable front seats in the Range Rover Velar come with up to 14 ways of adjustments, including a four-way lumbar with memory function.

There is also a dual-zone air-conditioning system with rear air vents, premium cabin lighting, electrically adjustable steering column and a myriad of colours for the leather upholstery. The panoramic roof is fixed, with a thick sunshade thus headroom is pretty impressive in the Range Rover Velar.

    Infotainment

As mentioned earlier, the infotainment system in the Range Rover Velar consists of two 10-inch high-resolution displays. The lower screen functions as the control for the vehicle setting and driving mode program as well. Connectivity to the infotainment system includes USB Type C and Type A. There is also a 12-volt power socket for the rear occupants as well as in the luggage area.

Unlike other models, the Range Rover Velar promises great audio pleasure via the Meridian-brand 3D Surround sound system that plays high-quality output over 17 speakers and 825 Watts. Great concert-like music is staged to each occupant via the Trifield technology.

  • Powertrain

    Range Rover Velar – Powertrain

    Engine

The base Range Rover Velar P250 model features a new 2.0-litre in-line four Ingenium engine with a turbocharger that packs a maximum of 249 PS at 5,000 rpm and 365 Nm of torque from 1,300 rpm to 4,500 rpm, while the Range Rover Velar P380 features a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 engine for a healthy engine outputs of 380 PS/450 Nm of torque.

    Transmission

All variants of the Range Rover Velar only come with the 8-speed automatic transmission. Large metallic shift paddles in satin chrome are placed on the steering wheel for ease of use and familiarity. The use of ultra-tall 7th and 8th gear ratios allow for a quieter ride and better fuel economy, while a short first gear provides precise throttle control during off-road driving.

    Chassis

The front and rear suspension use a multi-link arrangement with extensive fitment of aluminium parts. Electronic air suspension is fitted as standard with Adaptive Dynamics control system. Drive is part-time four-wheel drive with Intelligent Driveline to distribute torque to the front wheels when required.

Similar to the larger Range Rover model, the Range Rover Velar also comes with the sophisticated Terrain Response driving mode with Dynamic Program. Drivers can easily switch to corresponding grassy or muddy driving conditions and all the drive and traction systems will adjust accordingly.

Range Rover also has designed the Velar to wade water channels or rivers up to a depth of 580 mm, as expected by loyal Range Rover owners.

    Drivetrain

All Range Rover Velar models come standard with the Four Wheel Drive with Intelligent Driveline system. Traction between the front and rear axle is continuously varied according to various parameters, and electronic systems will send power to the corner with the most traction.

Similar to other Range Rover models, the Terrain Response with Dynamic Program offers driver’s confidence and trust when faced with unpaved surfaces such as grass, gravel, mud and sand. An automatic mode takes care of everything, every time.

However, the off-road performance is lower than the full-sized Range Rover, which is understandable as plush, comfort and beauty are what Velar owners are buying into.

  • Driving Performance

Range Rover Velar – Driving Performance

    Engine performance

The Range Rover Velar P250 with 250 PS completes 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds, while the larger engine P380 with 380 PS completes in 5.7 seconds. Top speed of the four-cylinder Range Rover Velar is naturally lower too, at just 217 km/h, while the Velar P380 can reach 250 km/h.

    Transmission performance

Similar to many premium vehicles using the ZF 8-speed automatic transmission with a longitudinal (front-to-rear) layout, the shift qualities are of high levels. Smooth, intelligent with great response time as well as well-spaced ratios are all felt positively in the Range Rover Velar.

    Steering and handling

The Range Rover Velar handles competently around bends, but it won't be impressing long-time owners from Porsche or BMW. The steering doesn’t respond as sharply and body roll is evident even when the drive mode is in Sport.

  • Ride Comfort

Range Rover Velar – Ride Comfort

The electronic air suspension in the Range Rover Velar provides plenty of comfort via self-levelling and adaptive control logic. The system is also able to filter out plenty of harshness associated with large 22-inch wheels. Taller occupants seated at the back might feel the kneeroom is rather shorter than the German and Japanese models.

As for soundproofing, the Range Rover Velar offers a very quiet and serene cabin at all driving speeds. As mentioned earlier, the Range Rover Velar places comfort and luxury above off-road performance and the results are evident.

  • Fuel Consumption

Range Rover Velar – Fuel Economy

The fuel consumption of the Range Rover Velar P250 is 8 litres per 100 km (12.5 km/L) while the V6 in the P380 consumes 9.4 litres per 100 km (10.6 km/L) under the older NEDC cycle.

  • Conclusion

    Range Rover Velar – Conclusion

The Range Rover Velar looks beautiful outside with the large wheels and the R-Dynamic package. Proportions are just right with the long bonnet and a sloping roof with respectable luggage space. Inside, the cabin feels properly premium with clean lines, high-quality materials and high-resolution screens.

Occupants at the back row might feel the kneeroom slightly compromised, but otherwise, the interior of the Range Rover Velar is quite a great place to be in. Performance from the P250 four-cylinder is sufficient with reasonable forward momentum and smoothness. Reputation of Range Rovers are however not a great subject, where the brand continuously places at near-bottom of global user rankings. As such, be prepared to return to the dealership when taking ownership of the Range Rover Velar.
