2020 will be an interesting year for car buyers in Malaysia, as manufacturers are gearing up to introduce a long list of new models.
The 2020 Perodua Bezza kicked things off in early-January, followed by the updated Volkswagen Passat, BMW X1, BMW 320i, and Mazda CX-30.
But what’s coming next?
The upcoming all-new Nissan Almera is an important model for Nissan Malaysia, as it has been quite a while since the company has introduced a brand-new model.
This all-new Almera made a regional debut in Thailand back in November, featuring a brand-new 1.0-litre turbocharged 3-pot petrol engine.
With that said, it remains to be seen if the new turbocharged engine will find its way here, as the engine was Nissan’s solution to comply with the Thai Eco Car Phase 2 scheme.
We reckon that a lower cost 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated 4-cylinder engine could be fitted to the Malaysia-assembled units.
A surprise entrant is the upcoming Perodua Myvi Style, which is essentially a Myvi on stilts.
We can expect the upcoming Myvi Style to get the same treatment as the Axia Style, including SUV-esque styling cues both inside and out.
According to sources, the new Myvi Style is expected to carry over the same 1.5-litre Dual VVT-i 4-cylinder petrol engine.
Set to be Perodua’s first-ever model to be built on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA), the Perodua D55L is expected to hit showrooms later this year.
Apart from its brand-new DNGA platform, the Perodua D55L is also said to feature an equally-new 1.0-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder engine mated to a CVT-type automatic.
With that said, the Perodua D55L is not a direct rival to the upcoming Proton X50, as explained here.
This is perhaps the most anticipated model for 2020, and we can see why.
The Proton X70 has paved the way for Malaysian to accept Geely products, and the response has been positive thus far.
If done right, the Geely Binyue-based X50 will be able to continue Proton’s momentum.
In fact, we've driven the Geely Binyue in China and found it to be a rather competant model.
The locally-assembled version of the Proton X70 has seen a fair share of delays, but that could soon change.
Initial units of the Tanjung Malim-assembled X70 have begun to roll off the production line, indicating that Proton will be launching the new X70 real soon.
While the 1.8-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine is expected to soldier on, the new X70 could ditch the 6-speed torque converter automatic in favour of a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.
Elsewhere, it could also receive some equipment upgrade, including a powered tailgate and possible a new head unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
With that said, the actual timeline of these launches are still subject to change due to the government’s new method of OMV (Open Market Value) calculation.
