Vietnam's car market witnessed several sales upsets in 2023, most notably by way of Hyundai topping sales charts in their respective segments, reports Autopro.com.vn.
Toyota Vios loses out to Hyundai Accent
In the B-segment sedan segment, the Hyundai Accent recorded 17,452 units sold, enough to garner it a 34.2% market share in the class. It's a substantial lead of 3,931 units over the second-placed Toyota Vios (2022's segment winner).
Point to note however is that their Vios isn't the all-new model that the rest of South East Asia has got since last year. The Vietnamese-market Vios is a refreshed version of the third-gen model (which can be traced all the way back to 2013, albeit heavily updated over the years), while the Accent is a newer model that was introduced in 2020.
The Accent is cheaper too, starting from VND 426 million (~RM 82k), compared to the Vios' VND 479 million (~RM 92k) opening price point. Supply issues also bogged the Vios, further compounding the loss of sales.
Nonetheless, it was enough to shoot the Accent straight into being the second best-selling car in the country last year. The Vios falls to 5th place.
Completing the B-segment sedan standings are the Honda City, Mitsubishi Attrage, Mazda 2, Kia Soluto, and Suzuki Ciaz, in 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th place respectively.
Hyundai Creta leads against Toyota Corolla Cross
Korea's strong showing continued in the subcompact SUV category, as the Hyundai Creta climbed to the top of the segment's sales with 10,719 units sold. The gap between it and the second-placed Toyota Corolla Cross wasn't big β only 234 units β but a win is a win.
Like the Vios, part of the reason why the Corolla Cross also fell out of favour among Vietnamese buyers are due to prices. Local production (CKD) of the Creta begun there last year, earning it a 50% drop in registration fees, thereby dropping starting prices of the model β it ranged from VND 640 million (~RM 123k) to VND 740 million (~RM 142k).
That's quite a difference to the imported Corolla Cross' prices of VND 760 million (~RM 146k) to VND 955 million (~RM 184k). Making things worse (or better, for Hyundai) was a 'mega promo' of sorts for run-out stocks of the imported Creta, which saw prices drop to VND 520 million (~RM 100k); cheaper than a Yaris!
This win also means that the Creta is the country's 7th best-selling model, overtaking the Corolla Cross in 8th.
Ultimately, the 'sales king' for Vietnam in 2023 was the Mitsubishi Xpander, sitting in the top of overall sales for the year with 19,740 cars sold, leading the standings ahead of the Hyundai Accent and Mazda CX-5. The top 10 list is below.
