Making its global debut at the 2023 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), the Mitsubishi Xforce is here to add some spicy competition to the compact SUV segment.
Just like the Mitsubishi Xpander, the Xforce is developed specifically for developing markets with a priority for Southeast Asia as the region is the biggest market for Mitsubishi Motors.
Despite looking like a strong and proper SUV, the Xforce sits on a modified platform of the Xpander and thus is only available with front-wheel drive (FWD) at launch. However, its 222 mm ground clearance makes it the highest in its class.
The Xforce's design showcases the latest evolution of Mitsubishi's Dynamic Shield which gives a prominent and distinguishable look. At the rear, the T-shape taillights enhance the familiar design language of the Three Diamonds.
The Xforce name carries over the naming scheme of the Xpander with a name that begins with the letter 'X'. Mitsubishi says it stands for "Extra Force to move forward for new experience and excitement".
Only one powertrain is offered for the Xforce, a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre MIVEC engine that makes 105 PS and 141 Nm which is mated to a CVT-type automatic gearbox. This combo is taken from the Xpander albeit recalibrated to suit the SUV more.
While the Xforce is a soft-roader, there are a few features that make it appear like an off-roader. It has 4 drive modes - normal, wet, gravel, and mud as well as a display mode that shows the tilt angle and compass which is inspired by the Mitsubishi Pajero.
Since we're mentioning the display, let's head inside the Xforce, shall we? Based on the Horizontal Axis concept, the instrument panel is designed to increase forward visibility for drivers while the interior space is among the most spacious of its class.
Another first for Mitsubishi is the Yamaha-developed sound system which should generate some excitement for audiophiles. However, if practicality is what interest you, the Xforce offers 18 storage spaces around the compact SUV!
The Xforce is also offered with 40:20:40 folding rear seats and a hands-free power tailgate for the highest variant. In terms of safety, the Xforce comes with 6 airbags as standard though there is no ADAS suite announced during the launch.
Only blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are offered though Mitsubishi said there are plans to introduce ADAS to the Xforce in future.
In Indonesia, the Xforce is available in 2 variants, Exceed which is priced at IDR 382.5 million (~RM 115k) and Ultimate which is priced at IDR 419.1 million (~RM 126k). The Xforce is planned for a Malaysian launch in the future but can it overcome the success of the HR-V?
