The compact SUV market is shaping up to be spicier with the launch of the Mitsubishi Xforce and while it has a premium interior and off-roader looks, the latest SUV is lacking in the advanced safety features department.
Currently, the Xforce has 6 airbags, blind-spot warnings (BSW), and rear cross-traffic alert (RCTA) as standard but those sound lacking compared to what is being offered by the competitors. Rivals like the Honda HR-V and Proton X50 offer a more comprehensive ADAS suite like adaptive cruise control (ACC) and lane-keep assist (LKA) but Mitsubishi hasnβt completely ignored those additional features.
βWe are thinking to have additional ADAS in the future but I cannot tell you the exact timing,β said Masahiro Ito, Chief Product Specialist at Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) to the Malaysian media at the 2023 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS).
He continued, βFrom the beginning we have some of those ADAS features like BSW and RCTA but we will add more features in the future.β
However, it appears that at least one of the Xforce units shown at the ongoing GIIAS offers a more complete ADAS suite. A white unit featured what appears to be a radar in its front grille. Perhaps this is a prototype model that could eventually be introduced in the future.
Besides, in order for the Xforce to win over buyers in Malaysia, the ADAS suite should be a given as competitors feature ADAS as standard or at least on higher variants.
In Indonesia, the Xforce is offered in two variants, the Exceed and the Ultimate, and are priced at IDR 382.5 million (~RM 115k) and IDR 419.1 million (~RM 126k) respectively. Both variants are powered by a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre MIVEC engine (105 PS/141 Nm) paired to a CVT-type automatic.
This powertrain combo is lifted from the Mitsubishi Xpander, albeit the updated model that is currently available in most global markets. Itβs worth noting that the current Malaysian-spec Xpander is the pre-facelift version that is offered with a 4-speed automatic transmission and is locally assembled (CKD) in Pekan.
