The Mitsubishi Xforce is quite possibly one of the most exciting (Xciting?) SUVs to be launched in recent years. Competing directly against the likes of the Honda HR-V and the Proton X50, the Xforce looks like a winner with a proper SUV design and a host of drive modes similar to a modern off-roader.

Despite having a ground clearance similar to the all-new 2024 Mitsubishi Triton at 222 mm, the Xforce is still a two-wheel drive soft-roader. Sitting on a shortened platform of the front-wheel driven (FWD) Xpander, the Xforce also shares the same powertrains as the 7-seater crossover albeit tuned for the SUV.

Underneath the hood is a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre MIVEC unit that ekes out 105 PS and 141 Nm. This is solely paired with a CVT-type automatic as no manual transmission variant was announced at its global debut at the 2023 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) last month.

Even though it’s an FWD soft-roader, the Xforce comes with technology normally found in 4WD vehicles like Active Yaw Control (AYC). Combined with the four drive modes offered – Normal, Wet, Gravel, and Mud – the system adjusts the driving force on the front left and right wheels to improve controllability.

Of the four drive modes, Wet mode is the most interesting as the Xforce is the first Mitsubishi model to debut such a drive mode. Developed to face Southeast Asia’s monsoon weather, the Three Diamonds claims that Wet mode improves cornering and stability on wet or flooded roads.
