Perodua is looking to sell 1,500 units of the new 2023 Perodua Axia E that’s now priced at RM 22,000, making it RM 2,000 cheaper than its predecessor. With that, the carmaker is counting on the lower pricing for the entry-level Axia to tempt more motorcycle owners to switch over to 4 wheels as they estimate that the monthly instalments would come to around RM 300.

Based on the previous Axia, this updated variant will sell alongside the current all-new Axia and serve as the base variant… or more crudely, the driving school spec.

Motorists considering purchasing a motorcycle below 250 cc would likely rely on credit loans with high interest rates, around 10 percent onwards. If your credit score isn’t up to par, the only other option would be the dreaded ‘loan kedai’ with even more exorbitant interest rates.

That said, the monthly instalment can come up to well over RM 300, likely closer to the RM 400 mark.

“Based on our discussions with local financial institutions, we found that it only takes RM 300 a month to pay the hire purchase cost of owning the Axia E. This is the same cost that would take for someone to purchase a new motorcycle on hire purchase as well,” said Dato Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, President and CEO of Perodua.

“The Axia E has been market tested and proven over years and we believe that this variant would serve its current role of giving motorcycle owners an opportunity to own a new car. It is part of our original objective of providing affordable and quality mobility for Malaysians,” he added.

Cost alone isn’t necessarily the sole objective in purchasing a kapchai or smaller scooter for transportation. But if that is the case, the lower price of the Axia E now makes car ownership more tempting for motorcycle owners that’ve always desired the safety and comfort of a new car.

Furthermore, Perodua’s also looking into the conversion from motorcyclists towards the new Axia E over the next 2-3 months. If they find demand to be high, they would look into offering a special deal for motorcyclists.
