On Monday, 31-July 2023, Mitsubishi Motors unveiled its newest SUV that would compete against the likes of the Honda HR-V and Proton X50 in the competitive compact SUV segment.

While the actual name of the successor to the ASX will only be revealed at next week’s Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), documents from the Indonesian tax office showed that there might be two variants offered in the archipelago.

Based on the latest Motor Vehicles Sales Value (Nilai Jual Kenderaan Bermotor, NJKB) document, two variants of the yet-to-be-named Mitsubishi SUV are listed – XFC EXC 1.5L 4X2 AT and XFC ULT 1.5L 4X2 AT.

The variants could be called Exceed which is listed in the document to be priced at IDR 265 million (~RM 79k) and Ultimate which is priced at IDR 279 million (~RM 83k). However, these prices are not finalised as the listed figures do not include tax.

As revealed during its global debut in Indonesia on Monday, the new Mitsubishi SUV is powered by a 1.5-litre engine paired with a CVT-type automatic gearbox that sends power to the front wheels. The manual transmission has not been announced yet nor is it listed on NJKB document but perhaps it could be introduced later in Indonesia as there is still some demand for the stick shift there.

The exterior design of the ASX successor is largely unchanged from that of the XFC Concept that debuted at the Vietnam Motor Show in 2022. The new SUV also has a ground clearance of 222 mm, the highest of its class and is designed primarily for the ASEAN market which is Mitsubishi’s biggest.

Bookings for the new Mitsubishi SUV have been open in Indonesia since 31-May. It will be built at Mitsubishi’s plant in Bekasi while first deliveries should begin in November.
