Isuzu has achieved a remarkable milestone with the production of its 6 millionth vehicle from its Thailand plant. It took them 3 years to add another million to their production milestone – the 5 millionth Thai-assembled Isuzu rolled off the plant in 2020.
Isuzu has not revealed whether the 6 millionth unit produced is a pick-up truck or a commercial lorry. Isuzu Thailand’s plant began operations in 1963 and assembled Isuzu trucks and buses.
Pick-up truck production began in 1974 with the Isuzu Faster and subsequently, Samut Prakan became the global production hub for the Isuzu D-Max since the first generation’s introduction in 2002.
Following the production milestone, Isuzu revealed that it will be investing THB 32 million (RM 4.25 million) into its Thai subsidiary within the next 5 years. This is to further develop the production facilities as it eyes to introduce a fully electric pick-up truck as early as 2025.
Besides the D-Max and MU-X, Isuzu also produces the Elf (N Series), Forward (F Series), and Giga (G Series) trucks in Thailand. It also produces the D-Max’s rebadged twin, the Mazda BT-50. It took Isuzu 34 years to produce its millionth vehicle in Thailand but the duration to produce the next millionth vehicle decreased over time as the world saw continuous rapid growth.
Isuzu introduced a facelift for the D-Max in Thailand in October which features an upgraded ADAS suite. For now, the D-Max offered in Malaysia is the pre-facelift model which saw some slight improvements made last year.
