    Isuzu D-MAX Stealth Overview

    The 2020 Isuzu D-MAX Stealth is a special edition model commemorating the pick-up truck’s 15th year anniversary in Malaysia. Based on the existing double cab 1.9 L 4X4 AT-Premium variant, the Stealth edition introduces several cosmetic enhancements and upgraded equipment both inside and out.

    Priced from RM125,799.20 (OTR without insurance), production is limited to only 180 units, out of which 75 will come in the Silky White Pearl colour and the remaining 105 unit in the Stallion Black Metallic. The price includes a special 7-year unlimited-mileage warranty and continues to be powered by the same RZ4E-TC 1.9 litre common-rail four-cylinder turbodiesel engine.

    Isuzu D-MAX Stealth Design

    Aesthetic changes over the standard variant are not drastic but is certainly noticeable. On the outside, glossy black trim replaces the chrome bits on the grille up front, as well as on various parts of the body including the fog lamp enclosure and front and rear lower bumper. The front lip has also been extended, giving it a more menacing presence. Satin chrome accent that extends across the front grille into the new headlamp garnish is unique to the Stealth edition.

    The Stealth edition also brings along a set of upgraded six-twin-spoke two-tone 18-inch alloy wheels with a ‘Stealth’ inscription on each wheel. There are also distinctive decals along the sides of the vehicle, with more ‘Stealth’ badging found on the tailgate. Sports roll bar and the T-lid cover are also available as optional extra.

    Isuzu D-MAX Stealth Dimension

    The Isuzu D-MAX Stealth is identical to the standard Isuzu D-MAX variant in terms of its dimension. Tipping the scale at 1,945 kg, it is 175 kg lighter than the 2.4 L Toyota Hilux and occupies a marginally smaller footprint too, measuring at 60 mm shorter and 5 mm lower in height. The Isuzu however wins out in terms of its length and wheelbase with 15 mm and 40 mm advantage respectively over its Japanese counterpart.

    Over on the Inside, the Isuzu D-Max Stealth comes with a ‘Stealth’ embossed red and black leather-fabric combination upholstered seats, along with piano black trims on the dashboard and dark grey headliner. The interior layout remains the same as the standard Isuzu D-MAX, with the 8-inch touch screen display taking centre stage, alongside the electroluminescent (e-LUMAX) instrument cluster with multi-info display for the driver.

    The limited-edition Isuzu comes equipped with a first-in-class powered sidestep which tucks neatly underneath the body when not in use. Also available is the feather touch assist which adds damper for the tailgate, making closing the cargo door effortless. LED puddle lights adds a sense of occasion when the door is opened.

    Additional kit includes a set of front and rear digital video recorder from IROAD, along with a 360 degress around view monitor that works with four cameras located around the exterior. Front parking sensors are also standard fit, allowing for a safer maneuvering of the vehicle. Other features like the Android based touchscreen unit, Android Auto and Apple Carplay compatibility and the dual-zone automatic climate control among others remains identical to the standard variant.

    Engine

    Mechanically, the D-Max Stealth continues to be powered by the same RZ4E-TC Ddi Blue Power 1.9-litre common-rail 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine from the 1.9 L 4X4 AT-Premium variant. It develops 150 PS at 3,600 RPM and 350 Nm of torque from 1,800 RPM.

    Transmission

    Power is sent to all four wheels (4x4) via a 6-speed automatic transmission by Aisin. Unlike the standard variant though, the D-Max Stealth does not come with a manual transmission option. The 4WD system on the Isuzu D-MAX does not offer a rear differential lock. Terrain Command allows you to switch between 2WD, 4WD-high, and 4WD-low to cater for pavements, wet roads, and off-road conditions.

  • Ride Comfort

    Isuzu D-MAX Stealth Ride Comfort

    Equipped with a double wishbone front suspension and leaf springs at the rear, the Isuzu D-MAX Stealth copes with everyday driving reasonably well despite riding on a larger 18-inch tyres. However, being based on a body-on-frame chassis that is inherently heavy with high centre of gravity, the pick-up tends to lean to its side in the corners. It feels more at home tackling rough terrain than maneuvering around urban areas.

    When it comes to versatility and reliability, the Isuzu D-Max is up there with the Toyota Hilux as the go-to pick-up truck, whether it is for commercial use or simply for an everyday IKEA run. Like a suited-up contractor with a pair of yellow working boots, you are guaranteed to stand out amongst the regular Isuzu D-MAX with the cosmetic enhancement and upgraded equipment available on the limited Stealth edition.
