toyota 86 jokes Q&A Review

Is the 2021 Toyota Camry XSE ideal for driving in the mountain region?

Uh, No. There are a VERY LARGE NUMBER of vehicles that are MUCH more satisfying, entertaining, athletic, and a whole bunch of other positives on a mountain road. From similarly priced or cheaper (Hyundai Veloster N, Miatas, Toyota 86, Subie BRZ, VW Golf) to pricey (C8, M3/M4, 911, Ariel Atom, AMG GT) to stratospherically expensive (F8 Tributo, various McLarens or Koenigseggs), there are many better choices old and new, more agile or higher powered. Coupes or sedans, GTs or sportscars, the better choices are myriad. Why you would think a Camry is “ideal” is beyond me and the chorus of enthusiasts rolling on the floor laughing at you. A Camry will do the job in a serviceable way, but if that was the car you picked out at the rental counter, even the rental agents would wonder why you didn’t pick out a cooler, more engaging ride. If you are talking about mountain roads that are best taken at slower speeds with more traction on tap, there are plenty of SUVs and high mobility products that are superior to the Camry as well. Thanks for the joke of the day. Please use Quora bandwidth wisely.

What do you think about the 2019 Toyota Supra?

The new Supra is a sick Joke of the Century. The real production Supra should have full body lines and aesthetically pleasing like the FT-1 prototype, instead of the Horror Show that we are having now. Enthusiasts are looking for a MK4 2.0, whether its V6 or whatever doesn't matter, not a Z4/Miata/86 rolled into one. Not only does the final Supra look achingly awful, its like Kevin Levrone's failed 2017 Mr. Olympia comeback, all HYPE. The GTR evolved gradually til the R34 275/330hp and finally into a monster to exactly what fellow enthusiasts want with their earlier mods. The same with Ducati sportsbike as well as Harleys, which all evolved into the ideal image, technical specs, branding and power that enthusiasts are looking for. Yes, perception matters, name matters. Those who argue and keep harping about its original 'stock' intent being a family coupe, mid-price range, collaboration and all that BS is missing the point, Toyota should do likewise and not going backwards, like South Africa. Talking about its positive aspects is completely meaningless in this regard. When R35 was finally revealed, its God-send. Now this is straight from Hell. When there are overwhelming criticisms, the manufacturers should better take heed. This is what Microsoft thought too when they released the Windows 8 with feverish justifications which turned out to be pure nonsense to force-feed their own agenda into consumers to sell the Windows Phone, look what happened. Business is about listening to customer's voice and feedback, nothing to do with who builds what. No matter how the marketeers try to justify it, consumers can smell something awry straight away. If Toyota continues to ignore that, Supra will be another one that bites the dust.

The new Toyota Supra was (mostly) developed by BMW, Toyota is known for bullet-proof reliability, BMW is in the opposite spectrum, what should we expect in terms of long-term reliability?

The new Supra is a sick Joke of the Century. The real production Supra should have full body lines and aesthetically pleasing like the FT-1 prototype, instead of the Horror Show that we are having now. There is nothing reliable about BMW, except that, its only reliable once the sensors are replaced and it will plague you like a constant money pit, just like Mercedes and any other continental cars. Tesla owners - after you got used to your new Tesla, was it worth it? Would you buy another one? Why or why not?

Completely worth it. Will never buy a gas car again. Model 3 performance fully loaded spoiled me completely. Plaid on the way. I bought my first Prius and was loving how it’s solar panel would keep the cabin temperature throughout the day, and how the sunroof would allow me to see the sky or how the moonroof darkened it. My whole roof is dark stealth glass now. Pairing it with Costco gas made driving it relatively cheap, and the low maintenance, high reliability Toyota is known for never leaves you disappointed. Drove all the way from Pleasanton to Vegas to help my family move my grandma to LA on a single tank (filled right outside Vegas technically) Then one day my friend at work caught me staring into his Tesla model S and he said “looks better from the inside” right before the handle popped out for me-MIND Effin BLOWN. So I took his offer to get in the passenger side and went for a spin by Shoreline in Mountain View. Then something CRAZY happened. My head magically planted itself firmly to the front of the seat and my vision literally went slightly dark around the edges as he gunned it. I was completely panicking as there was no engine rev up or warning or hesitation. I knew it was electric, but the rocket sound was quieter and more futuristic than anticipated-I had no idea what just happened. He laughed as I said “did we just get rear ended ?” before coming to my senses. It was like gravity itself flipped horizontally and decided to increase 3 fold. I’m pretty sure the earth tilted off it’s axis a bit after that. I was completely shocked at how badass, quick and sexy this machine was. A long while later Elon announced its little brother was coming as he showed its features. I was in a better place financially at the time since all my school loans were finally paid off, so it was time to put in my $1K reservation. After waiting two years and 3 months I got that call all Model 3 owners remember - Your car is ready! (I had the opportunity to get it much sooner than the extra 4 months I waited, but I never go with first runs of ,anything, since there will always be issues-and there indeed were in many lower vins so glad I did.) I went to get my car and this is the most phenomenal car I have ever owned ,or driven,. Having owned an 86 Celica, 92 Camry, a Prius and Mazda CX-5, you would say “yah duh, you have only owned low end cars.” This is a markedly different level of car and driving experience overall. I used to hang out at Club Auto Sport and have driven the Mklaren F1, Bugatti Veyron, a Mercielago and many other pieces of badassity. They are fast and powerful, and fantastic - Expensive and likely worth the price tags. But now, while hearing brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr constantly while in a normal car is great for races, but for a commuter car, or road trip where I am in my car for hours, I am spoiled with complete silence. I get MASSIVE performance with linear acceleration, and it’s cheaper than the super cars I love. Waking up every day with a full charge is completely hassle-free and I don’t have to remap my day for the weekly gas station dance - and the power is 1/3 the price than to fill even my Prius. Driving my empty Mazda to pick up and haul things sometimes gets weird now. I once thought something was wrong when pushing the gas since it didn’t move forward “correctly”. It was simply the laggy behavior of its engine, ,just as designed,. Everywhere I go, heads turn and phones secretly snap a pic for how beautiful the car is. They let me go through a stop sign too sometimes before my turn, smiling and waving me through with that “Wow wtf is that!” smile on their faces. Traffic means autopilot takes me home. If I had this car when I went to move my grandma, my naps and breaks along the way would have been charging opportunities. No time lost whatsoever as the super duper chargers are right along the path I actually took back then. Tesla is great at this. Cheaper, quieter and less stressful road trips at lower cost is amazing. The audio system is great Two words - ROMANCE MODE Tons of extra storage No changes of oil, less gearbox fluids, no spark plug changes (rare in modern cars), No worrying about: Fuel pumps hundreds of transmission parts 3. Hundreds of engine parts 4. Brake rotor resurfacing and pad replacement 5. Fuel vapor explosions in a crash 6. Smoking up my son’s future as much. Ev’s are ,demonstrably, greener if you care about math and science and disregard the FUD from uninformed folks who fear change. I can charge at home on an increasingly greener grid or solar later if I get it. Not completely pollution free, but miles ahead of liquid cars (goes for pretty much all EV’s) and the grid is improving year over year. 7. Collisions. Lots of safety and avoidance features on Tesla’s and among the safest cars ever built. They actually broke many safety rating systems due to all the extras the exceeded. 8. Obsolete navigation maps 9. DEALERSHIPS - good riddance. 10. Smog inspections 11. Storage space and leg room 12. Gas price hikes and shortages 13. Mufflers and exhaust corrosion and leaks. 14. Timing chains/belts snapping 15. Catalytic converters and oxygen sensors 16. Bad infotainment junk that never gets updated. My Prius updates maps via $450 locked down DVD’s for f’s sake. 17. Power steering fluid 18. Cam shafts and head gaskets. The list goes on. —— Short answer is no regrets at all. The oil industry just lost another family of car buyers for GENERATIONS. The tipping point was reached a while ago and I happily contribute my weight to tipbthe scale even further. OPEC is going to shrink and many players that have exploited tons of consumers in various bad ways will thankfully die by a billion tiny silent electronic cuts. Time’s up. UPDATE - After almost 4 years, I had to perform 3 minutes worth of maintenance on the passenger side upper control arm joint that went dry and started creaking. I bought: $19 grease gun $4 red n tacky mini grease cannister $5 zerk needle I injected the grease around the retention ring (to prevent piercing the boot) After a month of driving, ZERO squeak still. Apparently this early revision arm had a dry out problem that had been remedied with an up rev from the Korean supplier after I bought mine. My old prius had maintenance costs 16X that in the first year alone. As Scooby would say "Its Rame Rover Rice Rars!" I find it extremely hilarious when someone will whine about having to supercharge for 10–15 minutes on a once a year toad trip yet ignore the literal hours they must endure the other 99% of the time dealing with the aforementioned headaches to justify sticking to their obsolete comfort blankets. Funny how bias works. full daily range beats that nonsense handily and spending more time dealing with fueling than a home charging ev does, make me laugh even harder. Ive recently debated people in my car club that will wax on about how awesome it was spending WEEKS rebuilding an engine that sacrificed itself trying to take down the mighty PLAID just to brag about how ,loud, their losing engine was - as if ,THAT, was what the race they just absolutely got spanked with a wire hanger in was all about. If this level of absolute damage is what an 18 year old company can do to legacy auto whov'e been in the game 10+ decades, no wonder their stock prices are an absolute joke (just like their technology).

What are the advantages of having a BMW engine in the 2020 Supra?

None. Zero advantage. You have a Toyota badge which is supposed to be known for reliability and economy but instead you get zero Toyota R&D but a BMW Engine and drivetrain which are know to be unreliable money pits. In other words, you have the the worse of both worlds. Not only does the final Supra look achingly awful, its like Kevin Levrone's failed 2017 Mr. Olympia comeback, all HYPE. The GTR evolved gradually til the R34 275/330hp and finally into a 600HP monster to exactly what fellow enthusiasts want with their earlier mods. Is there an age when people stop buying clothes and furniture and just keep using what they already have?

My mother has been half-joking about this for some time. She owns an older Toyota Camry with really low miles and has said for years, “This is probably the last car I’ll need to own.” The last time my younger brother and his wife were in town, they took Mom shopping for some ,new, clothes, because she has a tendency to just make do with what she has. She’s 86, but my guess would be that she has a lot of years left, so I hope we’ll be able to get her out for new clothes from time to time. Another aspect is that her clothes don’t get a lot of wear, so they ,can, last for quite a while.

As a car enthusiast, what do you think of the new, sportier offerings from Toyota?

Still fake. Even the 86 is faking it. A brand should fine tune a sporty product to the point that modification is unnecessary. Toyota isn’t interest. They interest in money. All these 86, Supra, Gundam mod iM (in Japan), etc. are all gimmicks to raise awareness and make money. They are reliable? Yes, but why? Better materials? Better production line control? Better design? These are just marketing talks. Their products are all under powered. Of course they are reliable. They limit you from reaching the red line at best they can. Of course they are reliable. They use the same stuffs over and over for 10 years+ across many models as they can in Toyota and Lexus. They would be shame if those parts are not reliable with all the data they can get from mess production! They scare to produce new and they scare to push to the limit. I have driven the LFA when I worked at a Toyota dealership about 3 or 4 years ago. The first time I don’t hate driving a Toyota. It gives you the power, the handling, the soul, the mission and purpose! The aerodynamic suck the car inward if goes fast enough in a corner, just like a STI. Which other Toyota/Lexus can do this? 86? Any proper low rider can do that. MX-5, Mini, Impreza and many others are way better than 86. What so special about it? $26k for a cheap fake sport car? For what? Regular sedan transmission with paddle shift that can’t hold too much stress? How about an AMG GLA with a proper transmission and 4 cylinder twin-turbo doing 375 hp? Plus a PE system, a true dual pipe from manufacturer. What TRD does? $30k+ for a show, the RC would be a better show although it still a ripoff. The truth is, other brands strive to provide some GTs, sport sedans and sport cars at a competition level while maintaining reliability and offer a competitive rate. Look at Porsche 718 and AMG GLA and Evolution and Impreza and 370Z. These are the cars with romance on country side and a beast on track for fun. Are they less reliable? Yes if you push them all the time without proper maintenance. But proper maintenance is the same across the board. But Toyota stop owners from pushing their products with a computer that give you headache for down shifting and reaching red line. And they call it ‘safety.’ Toyota is not that safe as the general public thinks. This is just another marketing add on value. They advertise the canard diffuser on sedan like a Corolla saying it helps to stabilize the vehicle when passing a semi-truck. Is Toyota the only brand has canard diffuser? Obviously not. Crash results? Well, go check their real scores and compare them to other brands. Fuel economy is totally a joke. Toyota output lesser than competitors. Of course the fuel economy looks good. But is it? In mountain areas like San Francisco, Austin, etc. Toyota/Lexus need way more power than many others to maintain speed going uphill. It so bad that an uphill climb on I-10 can decrease the speed effectively from a 70 mph to 55 mph. Why? Because Toyota/Lexus cars have less power output and their cars heavier than many competitors. It was actually a surprise to me that Americans take the Supra so seriously. Supra is a GT. It is heavy. A FD3S stock to stock real racing can outrun a Supra at anytime. Because FD3S is sport car. Back in the 80s and 90s, you hear Evo, Impreza, Z, RX-7, DC2, DC5, FC2, R32, S2000 in Asia most of the time. Because Supra is a heavy RWD. This is why RC isn’t performing great. LC is not any better that GTR. 718 GT4 can be better value. STI can be more fun! Speaking of the RC, do Toyota really need to launch a new Supra? It just another marketing gimmick. Good call if you are thinking of the MR2, but Honda has NSX, so…

Do you think the 2020 Supra is worth it?

No. ZERO. You have a Toyota badge which is supposed to be known for reliability and economy but instead you get zero Toyota R&D but a BMW Engine and drivetrain which are know to be unreliable money pits. In other words, you have the the worse of both worlds. The GTR evolved gradually til the R34 275/330hp and finally into a 600HP monster to exactly what fellow enthusiasts want with their earlier mods.

What are the pros and cons of the new Toyota Supra?

Pointless to talk about its Pros when the new Supra has become a sick Joke of the Century. The real production Supra should have full body lines and aesthetically pleasing like the FT-1 prototype, instead of the Horror Show that we are having now. Why are they using cheap front vents that are worse than a KIA? Why are they messing with BMW engine/parts which are known for their unreliability like a money pit? Enthusiasts are looking for a MK4 2.0, whether its V6 or whatever doesn't matter, not a Z4/Miata/86 rolled into one. Not only does the final Supra look achingly awful, its like Kevin Levrone's failed 2017 Mr. Olympia comeback, all HYPE.
