How much time and space for writing do I have for reporting this navigation glitch at Scouts in Victoria / Australia ? The forecast wasn't the best for the weekend hike, but in Scouts “,there is no bad weather, just the wrong gear”., No, no cancellation, the event was on. Anyone able with the transport of the Scouts to the mountain was most welcomed to participate in the hike. ,"What is the access to the camp ground like ?” "Level as a board. ANY car can get there. Only the mountain itself is a steep hike.” Noted. So the Toyota HiAce was, “on duty”,. Getting out of Melbourne on that wet night was a challenge as ,Citylink, had changed access to a few lanes heading west over the Westgate Bridge. Before leaving town, let's fill up at the station before the ascend to the bridge. Rotten Friday night traffic ! Everyone had tuned their mind to the Footy game later and jammed into peak time, nobody was letting me change lanes . Bummer, here we go, having to turn unto the Bolte Bridge, getting billed with toll for the unwanted diversion. Off at Footscray Road, over to the on ramp again, another toll sector and back to the Westgate Freeway, thankfully getting into the fuel station this time. Trying to get back on the road, I missed the on ramp, ending up in Port Melbourne. Will we get to Mt. Buangor tonight ? ,Westward ho,, over the Westgate Bridge and unto the Western Freeway. We are finally on track in this washed out night. Past Ballarat the next challenge was waiting. Where to turn unto the bush road to the campground ? Just follow us. The Scout Leaders in charge of the tour with more than 10 years experience both were slowly progressing in search of the correct path. Last time they got there in daylight … This must be it. The leading 4WD with the trailer and the camping gear was vanishing in a right hand bend on a bush track that opened up to the left from the main road. And so did the Ford Falcon sedan of another parent. Turning right I couldn't believe the scene that opened up before us, lit up by the headlights of the HiAce. A sheer drop of an immense angle in drizzling rain. Even had I slammed the brakes, there wasn't an escape. "BRACE, BRACE, BRACE”,. Let it roll to the next level spot. One of the girls in Scouts (there are no ,"Girl Scouts”, in Australia !) was screaming her head off. Keep control of the steering. We’ve made it … Stuck somewhere on a muddy wet path, west of Ballarat. No chance to get up that hill again. Assembly in our convoy of 3 vehicles. One of the Scout Leaders was shaking his head. ,"When I came down, I said to my mate here in the 4WD, the HiAce is going to roll …, sideways., We had you written off ! Top job !” Fine, but what’s next ?, "Let's try that hill ahead of us. Not as steep as the other. It might lead to the campground.”, The Ford struggled up. I should be able as well. The groves in the tires were filling with muddy clay, tough job, keep the wheels spinning, that's it. No further than here. The next section was steeper again. Where exactly were we ? Good question, let’s check the map. ,“Hm, this path looks exactly like the one to the campground. I guess we are here. No problem, we are ,just following this track with the 4WD to the camp.,” “Ah, Chief,, that brown line is a topographical height line,. Follow it to the left, see, here it is stating 400. We are at 400 m height, nothing else. See this dotted line. ,That, could be that track up there. Give it a go.” The 4WD managed it and ferried all the Scouts to the camp. Leaving the other parent and me stranded in this wet valley. Lucky I had stacks of blankets in the van. Let’s settle for the night. Tomorrow they will tow us out of here. Daylight had another surprise. We were parked a few metres away from a farmgate, part of a fenced off paddock. A track along the fence was level all the way back to the main road. While another 4WD was on the way from Melbourne, we carefully drove through the paddock to better ground and finally by the intended path, not too far up the road, yes, ,“as level as a board”, into a grassy patch with tents and a shelter offering a roaring fire and a hot cuppa. That’s that - we are heading home. Those requiring the hike for their ,“Blue Level Accreditation”, did get it signed off. Winter in Victoria can have its surprises. The return trip did incorporate further ,“carwashes”, by the hefty downpours. Mt. Buangor had to wait for another hike.
I did a similar conversation on an old Bronco II. The probe I had was the style that goes into the radiator fins, I placed it on the top close to where the upper radiator hose goes in. I then tuned the thermostatic controller to come on when the engine temperature was around 195–205 degrees. After the initial set up I took it for a drive close to home, up and down highways and in city driving to make sure air flowing across the probe didn't affect my temperature settings. My fan does not run particularly often on the highway but runs pretty consistently in town on hot days. I also did a “pusher" fan in front of the radiator that is on a toggle switch as well as attached to the air conditioner so that it runs always when the air conditioner is on. I've never had to use the toggle but wanted to make sure I had options just in case. I wouldn't worry about wearing out the fan, ive been running this set up for about 8 years and 60,000 miles. The pusher fan did fail but it sounded terrible the day I installed it and only got worse, after 9 months I had it warrantied out for a new one that was so much quieter. Things you may want to watch out for with the electric fans is to make sure you've got the highest output alternator available and a quality battery. Those fans take a lot of power that the original alternator just wasn't designed for. I assume it has the 22R variant engine so upgraded alternators are readily available. I replaced my factory 65 amp alternator with a 150 amp alternator and greatly reduced the issues I had with the fan running excessively. The down side of the larger alternator is that you really should upgrade the belts to accommodate the higher demand on the alternator. I went with a dual V-belt system originally but later redesigned everything to run on a modern serpentine belt.
