Production of the Suzuki Jimny started at Maruti Suzuki’s plant in Gurugram earlier this month, making it the second plant after Suzuki Motor's plant in Kosai, Japan to build the fourth-generation model.
Now, the first 184 units are ready to be exported, with the initial markets to receive it being Peru and Columbia. Subsequent batches will find their way to African countries and the Middle East.
Reports from India also mentioned that Maruti Suzuki could be assembling a 5-door version of the Suzuki Jimny roughly six months after the local assembly goes online.
If the 5-door Suzuki Jimny does come to fruition, it will be the first time a 5-door variant is offered for sale. Ever since its inception, the Suzuki Jimny always has been a 3-door model.
To recap, the fourth-generation Suzuki Jimny, codenamed JB, made its global debut back in 2018. Suzuki currently offers two body styles of the Jimny: a kei car-sized version and a regular-sized version.
The former is a Japan-only model, powered by a turbocharged 660-cc three-cylinder petrol engine (64 PS, 96 Nm), while the latter is the global model. The global model gets a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that does 102 PS and 130 Nm.
Transmission choices include a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic, with power sent to all four wheels across the board.
Closer to home, as what we’ve reported earlier, the Suzuki brand could be reintroduced in Malaysia by none other than the Naza Group.
