Mazda will be launching several new SUVs beginning 2022, and just last week the Mazda CX-50 started production in North America. Now, Japanese media have taken a shot and rendered the Mazda CX-80, an upcoming model that’s a little bit more relevant to us Malaysians.
One of the five new SUVs announced – alongside the CX-50, CX-60, CX-70, and CX-90 – the CX-80 will be sold in Japan and Europe, which gives it a good chance of appearing here, considering some of our Mazda models are imported from Japan.
The CX-80 will be a three-row, seven-seater SUV, and it's heavily touted to be the successor of the Mazda CX-8. It’s expected to be slightly bigger than that as well, whilst leaning more into the brand’s more premium aspirations.
The CX-80 is a ‘Large Group’ product, so it will be offered with 3 powertrain options, depending on markets – a rear-wheel drive (or all-wheel drive) 6-cylinder regular combustion engine, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and a 48 mild-hybrid (MHEV).
The powertrain line-up will include gasoline (SkyActiv-X) and diesel (SkyActiv-D) options. Power figures are something that’s still unknown at this point of time.
The Mazda CX-80 is slated to go on sale in Japan beginning 2023, with international markets to follow after that.
