    RENAULT KOLEOS – Overview

The Renault Koleos is fully imported from South Korea since the very beginning of the first-generation in 2012. It is manufactured by Renault Samsung Motors and it’s known as the QM5 and 6 back in South Korea. The Renault Koleos has always been a non-European Renault product, where it was targeted to the Russian, Indian, and Asia Pacific markets.

In Malaysia, the second-generation Koleos is offered in three variants, priced from RM181,886 to RM206,887 and competes with the Nissan X-Trail 2.5, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 2.5, Subaru Forester, Peugeot 5008, Volkswagen Tiguan Alspace and Toyota RAV4 2.5.

  • Exterior

    RENAULT KOLEOS– Exterior

On the exterior, the Renault Koleos certainly is large, in fact, longer than the Nissan X-Trail that has seven seats. Standard features include automatic on-off LED headlights, large C-shaped LED DRLs, satin grey roof rails and Renault Smart Key Card Entry system. The tailgate features a handsfree powered operation too. In the 2021 facelift, the tail lamps were revised to look more premium with more shades of red.

Plenty of chrome is used on the front bumper, grille, doors and even the rear bumper. A large decorative trim can be found on the front doors, which is a design feature that connects to the DRLS. On the more expensive Signature variant, owners get larger 19-inch wheels and a two-piece panoramic moonroof. TCEC also offers satin-silver coloured front and rear bumper spoilers plus side steps on the Signature Plus variant.

    RENAULT KOLEOS– Interior

    Dashboard

The dashboard is straightforward in usability and even design, as it looks as symmetrical as it possibly can with a large central area. The large 8.7-inch portrait-orientated infotainment display dictates the design of the dashboard, making it simple and fuss-free.

To increase the sense of quality and ambience in the Renault Koleos, the lower half of the dashboard features double stitching on soft materials. This extends down to the shift lever area, which is furnished with piano black and long satin chrome finishers.

    Instrument cluster

The Renault Koleos gets a hybrid instrument panel, where only the fuel and temperature gauges are analogue gauges. A multi-information display is presented via a large 7-inch colour display unit. Drivers can also alter the theme of the display. The ambient lighting in the doors are also synced to the background lighting in the instrument cluster.

    Space and practicality

The cabin of the Renault Koleos is large, larger than the usual suspects such as the Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson and Subaru Forester. The rear accommodates three adults without rubbing shoulders thanks to its wide dimensions and also well-sculptured seats.

Storage space includes a lower console cup holder with cooling function, which is large enough for 4 cups and also comes with a retractable lid. Underneath the sliding front armrest is another deep console box. A sunglass holder is fitted at the headlining, together with the map lamps.

One aspect that sticks out like a sore thumb is the storage nets at the back of the front seats. We certainly don’t expect something so simple in a large SUV. Perhaps it is useful for parents to keep track of their children’s toys which are usually lost in the seat pockets.

Boot space is the largest at 542 litres. The high placement of the roll-away tonneau cover also means it’s easy to place large items and hidden away from prying eyes.

  • Features

    RENAULT KOLEOS– Features

    Safety features

There are six airbags in the Renault Koleos, with the consumer-expected passive safety system such as electric stability control, hill start assist, and traction control. Unfortunately, there is no option for Advance Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) such as adaptive cruise control.

The driver is alerted of objects in the blind spot via the monitoring system. The rearview camera also projects in the 8.7-inch infotainment display with parking sensors on both front and rear bumpers. Only the Signature Plus variant with the exterior bodykit comes with a Digital Video Recorder. For those who are curious, the Renault Koleos uses a full-sized 17-inch spare tyre.

    Comfort features

Standard features in the Renault Koleos includes an auto-dimming rearview mirror, dual-zone automatic air-conditioning with rear duct, front cup holders with cool ventilation, cruise control, powered front seats, black combination leather upholstery, ambient lighting, automatic ‘walk-away’ door locking as well as the slim Renault Smart

Key Card access with start-stop button and handsfree powered tailgate operation.
The Signature variants meanwhile add more premium front seats with larger relaxing headrests, adjustable thigh support extension and ventilation function. More light also enters the Signature variant thanks to the two-piece panoramic moonroof.

The driver’s seat also gets massage function as well as storage memory for seat position. As for the material used, Nappa leather in Sand Grey colour is used for upholstering the seats. It looks premium and inviting, certainly requiring extra care with wearing jeans or heavily dyed clothing. There are two USB charging ports for the rear occupants.

    Infotainment

The Renault Koleos is factory fitted with a large and uncommon portrait-oriented 8.7-inch capacitive touchscreen infotainment system. Called R-Link2, it features a navigation feature as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity.

Occupants can operate the large display like a tablet, such as swiping, pinching and drag-and-drop the icons/shortcuts. Driving information is also displayed here.
The sound is meanwhile pumped out to an 8-speaker setup with 3D audio processing done by Arkamys.

  • Powertrain

    RENAULT KOLEOS – Powertrain

    Engine

The Renault Koleos in Malaysia is equipped with a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine with peak outputs of 171 PS at 6,000 rpm and 226 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm. The same engine can also be found in the Nissan X-Trail.

    Transmission

Power goes to the front wheels via a CVT-type transmission. There is a manual mode for sportier drives on the shift lever to manually select the required gear step/ratio.

    Chassis

The front suspension features MacPherson Strut design with the rear features the norm of the segment- independent multi-link. Two-tone alloy wheels are fitted to the Renault Koleos- 18-inch for the regular variant while the Signature variants get larger 19-inch size. When laden with passengers, the Renault Koleos still has quite a respectable ground clearance of 160 mm.

    Drivetrain

The Renault Koleos was offered with both front-wheel drive and AWD variants in Malaysia. However, brand new units from TCEC now only offers front-wheel drive set up. The AWD offered driver-selectable modes of 2WD, Automatic as well as 4WD Lock.

  • Driving Performance

    RENAULT KOLEOS – Driving Performance

    Engine performance

The 2.5-litre engine while doesn’t look incredible on paper (especially compared to the Mazda 2.5 or turbocharged units), it delivers an adequate performance at a large majority of time.

It’s responsive for most of the daily commute and highway driving. However, overtaking will reveal the powertrain’s relaxed demeanour as the CVT delays in bringing up the engine to the peak output.

    Transmission performance

Similar to the Nissan CVT, the gearless transmission in the Renault Koleos is smooth, quiet and very well-calibrated. However, only when driven very enthusiastically and plenty of unplanned full-throttle moments did the transmission hesitated to bring the engine to respond.

    Steering and handling

Riding back seat in the Renault Koleos would be the better seat, as the suspension is dialled up for comfort and long-distance journeys.

Bodyroll is also kept in check when taking corners at a faster rate of speed. Overall, while the Koleos doesn’t have the get-up-and-go acceleration response, it delivered where it matters which is a refinement on the highway and a feeling of solidness.

Steering response is adequate, sporting character like in the Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4 is not expected in this segment and the Renault happily pleases.

  • Ride Comfort

    RENAULT KOLEOS – Ride Comfort

    Soundproofing

Sound insulation scores top marks in the Renault Koleos. It is quiet, with plenty of tyre and environment noise muted.
The engine and perhaps the CVT transmission is slightly more audible when pushed hard, such as full throttle application, which is not the norm in these sort of family-oriented crossovers.

    Passenger comfort

Ride quality is also very good, in fact, we wish many SUVs could provide such a comfortable ride. The Renault Koleos soaks up uneven surfaces and bumps with a silent ‘thud’ and is fuss-free.

  • Fuel Consumption

    RENAULT KOLEOS – Fuel Economy

The Renault Koleos is rated at 8.1 litres per 100 km (12.3 km/L). There is an Eco driving mode to improve fuel consumption.

  • Conclusion

    RENAULT KOLEOS – Conclusion

The Renault Koleos is relatively large for the five-seater SUV. While Renault designers have tried their best, the Renault certainly looks bland and anonymous from the side profile. Nonetheless, the quality cabin and its relaxed driving experience are what most buyers in this segment appreciate.

Acceleration is not the most responsive but it gets the job done. It offers occupants a better, isolated ambience and riding comfort compared to other SUVs. TC Euro Cars (TCEC) offers a different ownership experience for the Renault Koleos via a subscription programme. This method allows usage of the vehicle, inclusive of maintenance within a shorter period.
