    Renault Megane Overview

The fourth generation Renault Megane made its first debut in Malaysia back in 2018. Priced from RM 228,000 (OTR without insurance) when new, the French C-segment 5-door hatchback is imported directly from Spain and is made available only in the sole GT trim.

The GT sets itself apart from the run of the mill Megane IV with a more aggressive exterior styling, sporting the GT and Renault Sport badging, not unlike the AMG Line trim for the Mercedes-Benz A Class or the M Sport trim for BMW 1 Series.

While it may not be as dynamically inclined as the full R.S model, Renault’s performance division did get their hands on the Renault Megane’s chassis and suspension development, incorporating R.S drive mode and 4CONTROL rear-wheel-steering technology.

The Renault Megane boasts a similarly distinctive front end as the sportier R.S performance variant with few subtle and understated differences. It does away with the R.S exclusive chequered flag style fog lamps and the Formula One inspired front blade while sporting the same instantly recognizable LED headlight with C-shaped 3D Edge daytime running light.

The GT line also feature gloss black front mesh grille, sporty front and rear bumpers, and a rear silver diffuser with dual trapezoidal chrome exhaust exits. It rides on a rather conservatively sized 17-inch Sebring alloy wheels in gun metal grey.

The Renault Megane is positioned above the Renault Clio in Renault’s vehicle line up. Available only in the more practical 5-door layout, the GT’s overall dimension is comparable to that of the similarly sized Volvo V40 T4, only marginally smaller in terms of overall dimension.

    Renault Megane Interior

On the inside, you will find black fabric upholstered front sport seats with silver stripes and blue contrast stitching, blue inserts with Renault Sport badging and a leather-wrapped flat bottomed steering wheel, along with more blue inserts and GT badge.

The column mounted paddle shifters, driving pedals and the GT Line embossed door sills are made out of aluminium for that added sporty touch. The dashboard and door panels are finished in black soft touch material accented with satin chrome trims.

A 7-inch touch screen infotainment system sits on top of an array of capacitive touch control and narrow buttons that can be a touch fiddly to operate. Interior space is adequate for both front and rear occupants with decent head and knee room. The 434 litre available boot space is one of the largest in the segment.

    Renault Megane Features

As standard, the Renault Megane GT comes equipped with Renault Sport chassis and suspension, front sport seats with integrated headrest, fully automatic LED Pure Vision headlight, daytime running light with 3D edge effect, 7-inch digital instrument panel, 7-inch capacitive touchscreen with R-Link 2 and 4CONTROL 4-wheel steer system. At low speeds, the 4CONTROL system turns the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the front wheels (up to 2.7 degree). Above 60 km/h, all four wheels turns in the same direction (up to 1 degree) for improved high-speed stability.

The available onboard Multi-Sense system configures your vehicle (engine response, gear changes, variation in steering wheel weight, engine sound, 4CONTROL responsiveness) and the onboard ambient lighting including colours of the instrument panel according to the selected drive mode (Comfort, Neutral, Sport, Personal, R.S mode). Standard safety features include 6 airbags, reversing camera with 4 rear parking sensor, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), traction control, ABS with EBD and EBA, Hill Start Assist (HSA).

  • Powertrain

    Renault Megane Powertrain Performance

Powering the front wheels is Renault’s Energy TCe 205 1.6 litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, developing a respectable 205 PS at 6,000 RPM and 280 NM of torque from 2,400 RPM. Launch Control is available as standard, allowing a century sprint time of 7.1 seconds before maxing out at a top speed of 230 km/h.

While the engine feels effortless and offers plenty of torque, it does not necessarily enjoy hanging out at the higher rev range. Stray too close to the limiter and the noise can get a tad too rough for comfort. The engine is mated to a 7-speed Efficient Dual Clutch (EDC) transmission, featuring custom technologies developed by Renault Sport such as Launch Control and Multi Change-Down function.

Multi Change Down function offers accelerated multi-downshifts when demanded. In Sport Mode, the EDC gear box ratios are reduced and the 4CONTROL system adapts accordingly, generating improved throttle and transmission response.

  • Fuel Consumption

    Renault Megane Fuel Consumption

Fuel consumption on a combined cycle is reported to be 6 L/100 Km with CO2 emission of 134 g/km, conforming to Euro 6 emission standard.

  • Ride Comfort

    Renault Megane Ride Comfort

While it may not be as dynamically capable ae the more track focused Cup chassis available on the R.S model, the Renault Megane GT benefits from the technical knowhow of Renault Sport in adapting motorsports technologies into production sports vehicles.

Featuring pseudo-MacPherson strut with lower triangle for both the front and back, the ride though on the slightly firmer side, is composed and sophisticated when dealing with road imperfections. Combined with the 4CONTROL rear-wheel steer system, the car feels half its size negotiating tight and narrow corners. And while it may not be as natural feeling like other hot hatches like the nimble Ford Focus ST, it just takes time getting used to it.

  • Conclusion

    Renault Megane Conclusion

The Renault Megane GT strike a great balance between the more extreme Renault Megane R.S 280 Cup and your everyday Renault Megane IV in terms of both performance and equipment available. At RM 228,000, it does undercut the Volkswagen Golf GTI in terms of pricing with just a slight compromise in power. But unless you absolutely have to have your car looking good on the outside, which undoubtedly the French are really good at, you will surely get more bang for your bucks on the more powerful and equally capable Ford Focus ST.
